In the UK, the home microcomputer versions of Bubble Bobble occupied roughly the same cultural space that Super Mario Bros. occupied in North America (with spiritual successor The NewZealand Story later ending up occupying the same cultural space as Super Mario Bros. 3). However, though we still see new Mario games today, series like Bubble Bobble rarely get modern sequels, so it was a delight to discover Polar Hacker's Bubble Bobble Deluxe, which is effectively a whole new game that's based on the NES version of Bubble Bobble. Upon starting the game, everything instantly feels both familiar and fresh, with the new stages easing you into the game in much the same fashion as the originals did. The level-design feels professional and well-thought out, and the new stages exhibit the same sort of personality as those found in the source-material. It's great fun to see what the game's going to throw at you next. The difficulty feels well-balanced, and this isn't one of those hacks where everything is super-difficult right away, though I have encountered some stages that I couldn't figure out how to solve without sacrificing a life or two. Audio-wise, the iconic and addictive original music has not been changed, which was absolutely the right choice for a hack like this, and everything will sound how it should to anyone who's familiar with any version of Bubble Bobble. The release trailer, as linked to in the description for the hack, is a fun effort at creating a period-style commercial for the game. I always enjoy extra content like this, as it's a callback to the days when Nintendo and other companies would use their marketing materials, packaging, and manuals to create a wider experience surrounding their games, and I think that this is an element of gaming culture that's worth preserving. All in all, Bubble Bobble Deluxe is a really fun hack that should be your first port of call if you want more Bubble Bobble. Recommended. I tested this game in the versions of RetroPie for both the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the Raspberry Pi Zero W, and it worked as it should with both. | |||
