Hack description

EJRTQ converts Metroid II to full color. This mod combines the art of the beautiful but buggy EJRT colorization 1.2 with entirely rewritten code, fixing bugs and crashes, allowing it to run on most emulators, and adding additional graphical improvements.

Reviews

A great work of colorizationriviery2023-09-05Version 1.3

Like another reviewer said, this is not the most inspired color palette, but still stands out as the most consistent and stable work of colorization to this amazing game.

I believe it add some needed personality to the biomes, just enough to them being recognisable in a world with this extents and with no map at all.

Poor choice of colorsRetroProf2023-04-30Version 1.3

I dislike this colorisation patch tremendously.

Previously I had enjoyed the "Metroid II DX" patch from 2013, but it was kinda buggy. So I decided to try this given the positive reviews.

Sadly the choice of colors used are not good. Everything is too dark, while there is little contrast between the colors used. Just to give a few examples: water, instead of being blue, is the same muddy color as the walls. Different areas of the walls, instead of being green to show growth, are just a slightly different muddy color. The hopper enemies, meanwhile, which are canonically meant to be red and bright green, are just a uniform dark green with a lot of detail lost.

The entire play area turns into an indiscernible sludge of similar dark hues.

Which is unfortunate because the patch itself is quite stable, and without bugs. Sadly it lacks artistic direction.

A Much-Needed Fresh Coat of PaintEldrethor2021-08-04Version 1.3

As much as I respect the Game Boy in all of its monochrome pea-soup-green glory, color can makes a huge difference, and this hack finally gives Metroid II a lot of the love that it never got over the years.

While the Super Game Boy does have a "default" color pallet assigned to this game, it was a very shallow pallet that never quite got the feeling right. EJRTQ hits all the right marks with this hack, with deliberate color choices that make sense. Samus's orange-red and yellow armor pops brightly against the earthy tones of SR388. Enemies are clear and visible onscreen, and power-ups are bright and recognizably purply. I especially appreciate the smaller details, like Samus's green visor and cannon. Even the acid water look nasty and uninviting.

Admittedly, while everything looks exactly as they should, the choice in color pallets also reveals how incredibly dull SR388 looks when compared to Zebes. While there are differences in colors between zones, most feature some shade of dirt brown, sandy yellow, or stone grey, with the occasional green or blue decorative accent. Yet they work in tandem with all of the more colorful active elements onscreen, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Unless I'm feeling nostalgic for some murky shades of pea-soup green, I can't imagine going back to playing Metroid II in monochrome; this hack is an essential addon to this game. While it still lives in the shadow of its older and younger siblings, being able to play it in full, realized color is an absolute treat, and I can't recommend this enough.

Makes the game look phenominal!Supergamerguy2021-07-03Version 1.3

This feels like a completely new game, rather than just a new coat of paint. Every graphic in this hack has been lovingly recolored to match the look of later games, which makes for a new experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the series. Though I wish a few Quality of Life fixes were added as well, what we have here is a notable improvement over the bland, grayscale original. This is a must play for anyone interested in giving the Gameboy version of Metroid 2 a try.

a beautiful take on a classicdjwyman2020-02-11Version 1.3

As a kid I have fond memories of playing this game on my shiny new green screened Gameboy for hours. Today trying to revisit this game in either black and grey or green and black kinda sucks. But apply this color and the game comes alive. After applying this hack I converted the ROM into a .cia for my 3ds and playing it on there you would think this game was originally an SNES game. Thank you for your hard work.

The Best Yet!Mother Kojiro2019-12-13Version 1.3

This is yet another colorization hack, but not only does it stop the game from turning into an absolute glitch picnic every time the tileset changes, it also has... you know... color! You'll still see a lot of earth tones, but there is frequent use of bright and bold colors, as well; this is the most immersive palette I've seen used in this game yet!

Gorgeous colorizationkkzero2019-12-01Version 1.3

If you can't stand Metroid II's monochrome visuals, this is the hack for you. The palette choices fit very well with the game. I especially love how the fade effect on entering a new area was redone to take advantage of the GBC's capabilities. Recommended to everyone looking to breathe new life into this game.

Adds to the overall experienceMindflower2019-11-30Version 1.3

Just played through the whole game recently. I often wondered why Nintendo didn't do a DX makeover in the first place. It gained some level of detail through the color makeup which makes the world feel richer.

Absolutely recommended.

Finally a Working Color Patch!redmagejoe2019-03-16Version 1.3

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are awesome!

This is the ONLY colorizing patch for Metroid 2 that works on VBAGX for the Wii. And on top of that the color choices are wonderful, even if they are based upon the EJRT patch. The fix to zone transitions, and the reversion of hidden passages being revealed with color choices are all huge bonuses. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to play Metroid 2 on any platform or emulator.

I have extraordinarily high praise for Quantum's hack but first I need to say that I actually Let's Played the whole game before writing this.

As far as I can tell, not only has the color palette been extended, the graphic chipset has also allowing for more variety and better looking game design overall. The chosen colors and palettes are what I would have chosen myself so its great to see this game finally get the treatment Nintendo should have given it years ago. Quantum hit it out of the park with this one and I really enjoyed playing through this again. 10/10
