A neat little visual hack for an unknown gamehobblinharry2023-10-11Version 1.0

So I just came across the hack completely randomly while digging through _all_ gameboy hacks here on RHDN. Super Mario Trap? Whats that? Oh its a hack of a game that isn't even a Mario Property? What's Mr Chin? Never heard of the game so looked it up, looked up some gameplay, seems like your typical late 80s/early 90s arcade style game. But I also found articles pointing out the stereotypical portrayal of asian character (more specifically Chinese I believe in this case).

Not sure if the author's motiviation here was to try to reskin what is a completely decent game gameplay wise with something less offensive, or if they are just a fan of this game and wanted to give it a Mario over-haul, but either way, it works here!

The reskin of enemies to spineys is smart because that lets the player know that Mario can't jump on them. The "traps" have a bullet bill-esque look to them, and the enemies leave behind coins now letting you know they should be collected. Not to mention just a core part of the game loop involves "breaking block" too.

This is by no means a "great" game, but for the era it was produced in when a lot of early game boy games were just this style of game play (think stuff like BurgerTime, Snow Bros, or even the original Mario Bros) the gameplay works well and the fresh coat of paint, whether you are looking for it to replace something possible offensive or just to make it look like a Mario game, makes this a neat little hack to take a look at and waste some time on.
