Hack description

The purpose of this hack is to remove stage difficulty scaling. So you can choose a Game Level (easy, normal, hard, arcade) that does not surreptitiously overwhelm you, and does give you better chances of recovering when you die.

(While each Game Level is easier than in the unmodded game, be assured that Normal Level, for instance, is still harder with this hack than Easy Level without it. ^^ )

If you're terrible at side scrolling shoot em ups like I am, this patch will give you a fighting chance to beat the game (I still had to use a Game Genie code for infinite lives). I had no idea the game could scale the difficulty up as it progressed but certainly on past attempts I'd start to hit a wall around level 3 or so. And once you've died in Gradius getting powered up again is usually extremely difficult if not impossible.

I did try using this patch with the SA-1 version of the game and it initially seemed to work until around level 4 when suddenly all of the level tiles became destructible which was quite amusing!
