Super Mario World
Just Keef Edition

It's the classic game with updated graphics, additional enemies and Dinosaurs, new tricks traps and paths, updated mechanics, and all new surprises along the way. Mario and the gang have decided to take a break from adventuring only to find that there is yet another adventure to be had! It's the same old story, Bowser kidnaps the Princess blah blah blah.

This is a re-imagining of the original game with sort of a Lucas twist. Now Dinosaur Land actually has a wide variety of Dinosaurs, Luigi is his own man and not just a color swap of his brother, Toad joins the adventure with tips and useful item stops, all new original levels, and much much more! Feel like reliving the fun of Super Mario World with some added challenge? Give this hack a whirl.
It's a BLAST FROM THE PAST!

NOTE: There are 2 different versions of this patch. There is the main game with 2 players. Player 1 and Player 2 are both controlled with 1 controller so that the game can be played 2 player on mobile devices or just to use both Mario Bros.
The second patch is the same game with the ability to select Mario or Luigi from the start menu. This patch will only allow for one player. Also, when I submitted 1.2 the changes only took effect in the main patch so this has been corrected.

Version 5.5

- Fixed spawning issues in Bronto Plains 1 and Crystal Caverns 4

Version 5.4

- Fixed some graphic mistakes. The H in "Continue Without Saving" was the wrong palette when Luigi brings up the menu. Buttons while swimming were also wrong palette. Fixed midway points to display correct graphics.
- Added something a little extra to Dorrie Lagoon 2. People seemed to think the last 2 dragon coins were left out of the game.

A wonderful ROM hack, but some things could improve.SkyLink2022-07-17Version 5.5

It's a phenomenal ROM hack, I liked it a lot, it surprised me with changes like keys and Yoshis elsewhere. The game got a lot harder and I struggled in some stages, but that's part of it. I found all 105 exits. And I also liked the new sprites of the scenarios, like mushrooms, waterfalls, dinosaur bones, it gave the game a lot more life. The new dinosaurs are pretty cool and really gave a new look to Dinosaur Land, but the one that swallows you up in the water stages really made me angry kkkk. In the end, it really is a great ROM hack that can outperform the original SMW.

One thing I didn't like was the height of the blocks in the Top Secret Areas, why so tall? Normally when I enter these areas, I'm in a hurry and I want to grab the power ups fast, but they're so high up and having to do a lot of jumping to reach them is kind of annoying. As I really like the GBA version of SMW, I miss being able to switch brothers by pressing R and also their dubbing. I particularly find the Super Nintendo version very silent after I played the GBA version, if I could add these two things it would be amazing. Maybe leave two separate patches, for those who want the dub and another for those who don't. I also noticed that some level are not counting that I collected all 5 Dragon Coins. I collect them all, complete the level, but it doesn't appear on the map I made, I need to pick them up again to correct the error. And other levels like Roy's Castle, despite not having made the level, it is already said that I got the Dragon Coins, making them not appear in the level. The Notorthon boss was the most annoying of all the new bosses, he just threw green hooves into the wall all the time, I died many times because time ran out just because I couldn't get the hooves.

Very nice hackisoacc2020-05-21Version 5.5

I just recently "finished" (I didn't get all the star road, paths or Yoshi coins. More about the reason for that later.) this well crafted hack of SMW. I really enjoyed most of it and I like the new dinos. They fit the style of the original and add a lot of flavor to the stages and world. The new features are also nice. I like the addition of Toads instead of just boring help boxes. The things they say are quite funny sometimes, but still informational about the stage or new tricks. Really well done in those departments.

However, there are some rough edges and problems with the difficulty scaling that keep it from feeling like it is a true successor to SMW. First off, this hack will be devilishly hard sometimes. Those new dinos? They are there 80% of the time to annoy you on top of the regular enemies. The Forest of Illusion was a big offender here. Thank goodness it's still easy to farm 1UPs. You will need them for some stages/areas as I died quite a bit sometimes. This kept me from wanting to play more after I beat it. It's simply my preference, but I'm not into beating my head against a stage for almost an hour again and again. The new mechanics did help me push through though.

I'm not a super pro Mario player so take that as you will. However, don't go into this hack thinking it only be a little harder or equal to SMW's difficulty. Bowser's Neon Castle will make you want to rip your hair out sometimes. I honestly about quit the game at the Nothorton mini-boss when he would ABSOLUTELY NOT shoot out turtle shells anywhere besides into the walls and I ran out of time more than once.

As for bugs, they are minor. I had a few times where jumping enemies would still hit me even though I was on top of them and they happened to jump up. Clipped through a few platforms or jiggled off the edge. (Mostly the leaves in Forest of Illusion.) The game would freeze for a couple of secs when the text came up after defeating a castle. Also when Bowser would fly on and off the screen in the final fight.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the playthrough. Felt good to finally beat after almost a week of playing. There is plenty of variety and new challenges in this hack. Don't go into this hack expecting a slightly improved SMW as there many changes most are great and some, depending on your playstyle, not so good. Try it out!

A title not very educatededwinmusic2020-02-21Version 5.1

I was recommended this hack and I wanted my little children to play it but the game title ruined it! I don't see the need to do unnecessary things, unless there is a strange intention behind all this!

Amazing... but still buggyrafsilva19832020-01-26Version 5.0

I completed the game with 103 scored in the menu on the Switch using Luigi, but I found several bugs along the way. Luigi sometimes appears buggy on the map, the game does small halt when entering or leaving the Florest of Illusion or Valley of Bowser, some levels randomly do not record the collection of Dino Coins and Dorrie Lagoon 2 just appear three coins. The biggest bug when using the Switch's instant save continues (it sometimes generates random items, so I used it in Dorrie Lagoon 2 until Yoshi Wings appeared, which led me to the Bicka Banga Brigde bonus, where Dino Coins appear, which I used to complete the collection).

The name almost kills it... but it's still great.ifightdragons2019-12-08Version 2.2

Very nice hack.

Love everything.

But, what's up with the name? Just Keef Edition? I have no clue what this is referring to, and it feels like an inside joke which is kinda lame when you want to use this as your main way of playing a timeless classic. Even the title screen feels slightly ruined with the weird name.

I'm thinking many people will not download it because of the name as well. It doesn't sound like an improvement hack, but more like some guy named "Keith/Keef/Whatever" just made his own crazy hack. But this is a legit main version of a classic game, and in many ways a serious improvememnt.

Besides the name, which I really dislike, it's a great hack.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I completely understand the difference between the two versions of the hack.

Download This, NOW!!Rubes Cubes2019-11-01Version 2.9

Although there are some minor glitches here and there mainly with the yoshi coins, this rom hack is truly amazing. All of the new added dinosaurs are completely built from the ground up, have their own behaviors, attack patterns, and hit boxes. This is by far the best version of Super Mario World to date and I highly recommend that anybody who loves Super Mario World just like either me or bensalot downloads this rom hack right away. There are even new mechanics and new stages brought in, along with a couple of other great new surprises that I won't spoil for you. It's as if someone who worked alongside the developers had a hidden directors cut of the game that we never got and was cancelled due to time constraints. Any time I ever go back to playing this game, it's going to be with this rom hack. He even went out of his way to add in some cool and unique enemies that aren't just dinos, graphical changes that just look so appealing. There is no reason that you shouldn't be downloading this right now instead of reading this review wtf you waiting for bruh!?

Same SMW, with lovely new content sprinkled-inUberdubie2019-08-20Version 1.0

This is pretty much the SMW we all know and love with some various yet minor additions, graphical changes/improvements, and increased difficulty (mostly due to additional enemy placements, and occasional poison mushrooms inside blocks). But all changes are fairly minor, and the jump in difficulty isn't significant. If that's generally something you're looking for, I certainly recommend giving this a try.

Layouts to levels are more or less identical to vanilla from what I can tell about half-way through (3 original levels are in this but I haven't come across them yet). The new enemies are of course the most notable change - and for the most part, I really enjoy their inclusion! They fit nicely aesthetically, and while certainly making levels more populated, they're not overly-done imo. AI/physics on them can get a bit glitchy at times, but they're mostly a seamless inclusion all-around.

Expect to hear more varied music sparsely sprinkled-in as well, which you've probably heard if you play other SMW rom hacks. Graphical changes are mostly welcomed, although I don't know how I feel about the new waterfalls in world 3 (they just clash a bit style-wise). Most of the visual changes I'd consider solid improvements, whether it's to power-ups, enemies, and especially new visual props on stages like mushrooms and bones on cave floors. And being able to save anywhere on the map at any time is always nice!

BUGS: In addition those previously mentioned, two very minor yet very irksome (imo) issues stuck out to me:

  • Underground areas do not have *any* of the reverb you're used to hearing on sound effects; such as jumping, landing on enemies, enemy grunts collecting coins and power-ups, etc. It just sounds like any other level in this regard. While again minor, it's especially odd to hear enemies like Blarggs without reverb (which you never heard without in vanilla). Playing this on Snes9X, vanilla SMW plays the reverb on underground levels just as it should.
  • On bonus stages that use the completion part of the music, an extra misplaced note is now always heard at the very end of it (after Mario flashes the peace sign).

Of any Mario rom hack that directly builds upon the vanilla game (rather than building an entirely separate game), this is the most complete and well-done I've ever played - my main reason for making this review is simply because this deserves FAR more attention. Looking forward to seeing more from this, and thank you for making and sharing it!

If Anything Lucas Should be Taking NotesXModxGodX2019-08-17Version 1.0

I've been wanting a hack like this one for a long time. The original game was great but it definitely has several wrinkles in it. This smooths them out while in the process adding on top of the good parts. I was a bit skeptical with the addition of more dinosaurs but for a place called "Dinosaurs Land" it makes perfect sense. As for a few things that could be improved for some reason this hack is 8 MBs large and I noticed that my emulator (snes9xgx for Wii) wouldn't read it as a result. I also noticed that trimming the ROM to 6 MBs in a hex editor doesn't change anything as far as code goes but makes it work on my emulator. Having it be that big seems unnecessary. As for everything else it's mostly nitpicks such as Crystal Caverns 4 having an unsightly palette and the wrong sound playing on occasion mostly with Yoshi's double jump.

Neat Idea, Minor BugsG30FF2019-08-17Version 1.0

I played through as Luigi up to Crystal Caves. Apart from the new enemy looks taking some getting used to, I have to say this is a very neat idea for a hack. A few of the enemy placements feel odd, and the yellow Rexes in Yoshi's Island 1 are a fair jump in difficulty (relatively, for the first level), but overall I like what I've seen so far. Replacing the hint boxes with NPCs is a clever idea, particularly in the Ghost House. And putting a Toad in the bonus areas to explain the game is a great idea. I wish that had been in the original game.

I did notice a few minor bugs that don't harm the game, but do stand out.

  • In the opening screen with the "Welcome to Dinosaur Land" text box, the game tries to give you five extra lives right away, causing the extra life sound effect to play five times during this scene. Additionally, when playing as Mario, this action causes some graphical garbage to appear next to his name in the HUD (a green 0 overwrites the M in his name).
  • In Yoshi's Island 1, the sound effect for Banzai Bills fires off multiple times, both before and after the Banzai Bills actually appear.
  • Yoshi's double jump sound effect seems to change randomly and I can't tell which sound effect is supposed to be the correct one.

I do also have one suggestion for a future minor change:

  • Change Princess Toadstool's name to Princess Peach, considering the other references to modern Mario games that have been added.

Overall, very nice work, and I intend to finish playing it.
