Hack description

Link's Awakening Redux is a hack that commemorates the release of the Link's Awakening Remake, combining three of the most essential improvement hacks out there, and also implementing full uncensorship for Link's Awakening DX to make the experience of the game much more enjoyable and without the annoyances of the original.

So what does this hack do specifically?

NOTE: Do NOT combine the main Redux patch with the Font Improvement patch! Only use one OR the other, not both! Once you select one, choose your optional patches accordingly.
If you used/patched the main Redux IPS, ignore the entirety of the Font Improvement folder and the optional patches that say "(Font Improvement ONLY)". If you do choose Font Improvement, then only use the patches included inside the same Font Improvement folder!

great QOL improvementszachs2023-09-01Version 1.3.5

great QOL improvements

  • the VWF looks nice and is faster to read, dialogs are faster to get through
  • I hated the incessant beeping when i'm low on health, love that gone
  • not getting the same dialogs to press through over and over and over when getting acorn/piece of power also alleviates an annoyance (and same for coming into contact with various bricks that need to be power-lifted/boot-rammed/rod-melted.)
  • the un-censorship was interesting, got to learn about what was done to make the release 'family friendly' in the US and see how it was before

changing the save button combo is great, all four buttons is awkward on my analogue pocket. missed an opportunity to also change that npc dialog that says how to save to match though! (the kid on the right tossing the ball by the first piece of heart)

when i feel like otherwise playing the original link's awakening, going to play it with these hacks. nice improvements without changing the actual game

Perfect for replays, good for first timersElwinBran2023-06-03Version 1.3.5

As I write this review, I have just finished Link's Awakening for the first time, using this patch for the most part. I played up to the second dungeon without the patch, then proceeded to play using the patch. The text is nicer compared to the original and the removal of the text message on objects is great. Being able to select the save button combination is a nice bonus.

Overall, this is a perfect quality of life hack for this old masterpiece. That said, as a first time player, I got confused a couple of times - to the point of needing help - because I did not recognize what I was supposed to do with certain objects. In particular, the rocks that can be broken with the Pegasus Boots were confusing. Without the hack, or when you played the game before, I imagine this would not have been an issue.

I did encounter a minor glitch later in the game, which did not meaningfully impact the experience. I have already contacted the creator and given their history, I would assume future versions have don't have this glitch anymore.

My conclusion then is, this is the definitive way to play for replays, and while I still recommend it for first time players, maybe less so.

Shadowone333 might be one of the greatest rom hackers I've seen in my 10 or so years playing rom hacks. This is one of the greatest games ever in my opinion and this is the best way to play it. Its hard to improve upon perfection but they did. Love the no thief downsides as it is such an awesome shortcut to just steal the bow instead of trying ti farm 999 rupees. The removal of pop up msgs also is nice. This game matters and this hack matters.

Almost perfect, save for one issueCoolCatBomberMan2022-01-12Version 1.3.5

Before playing this hack, I had never completed Link's Awakening. I would always ragequit at or around the first dungeon, but Redux's QoL improvements allowed me to stick it through to the end. While I would definitely recommend this for anyone's 1st, 5th or 10th playthrough, I do have a minor complaint.

For context, I only used 3 optional patches: Restore Low Health Beep, Remove Photo Overlays and Remove THIEF Photo Downsides. After successfully stealing the Bow, I carried on as normal. No one called me THIEF, but after beating the final boss, during the final cutscene, my name would be replaced with garbled text. The dialogue itself was perfectly fine. I'm willing to bet that the ending cutscene knew not to call me THIEF, but didn't know what to call me instead.

Aside from that, I loved this hack, overall. Definitely give this a try if, like me, you don't have access to the Switch remake.

You can change the save shortcut now?!Cralex2021-12-29Version 1.3.5

I've been following this excellent patch for some time now, as it makes for the best Link's Awakening DX experience available. I heard that there was an update, but I couldn't figure out what was different until I downloaded the patch files and looked in the optional patches. Turns out, you can now change the save shortcut! This makes the game even better, especially if you're playing on a device that has trouble with the default shortcut (hitting all buttons) or if you have trouble doing it yourself. Don't miss this!

Recommended with a caveatthanksgoogle2021-04-04Version 1.1

As http://www.romhacking.net/reviews/4028/#review mentioned, even though this patch is for version 1.2, it reintroduces some minor bugs present in the 1.0 version of LADX. Other than that it's perfect, though.

Good hack, minor issueskkslider2020-09-07Version 1.3

The optional "Font Improvement" patch is incompatible with the VWF patch, turning the text completely unreadable. Luckily, it's optional, but if the VWF patch was optional too instead of being built into the main patch, there would be no issues in the first place.

Aside from the above, a great compilation of improvement hacks. Decensored content is nice to have, the VWF font is appealing, and QoL improvements are pretty much essential. Would recommend it even to someone who never played Link's Awakening.

Not recommended, but not bad eitherBlairBear862020-07-22Version 1.1

These changes are so subtle, that it really isn't necessary unless you are picky about this game. The new font is alright but I didn't like hearing the sound of each word appear even though the sentence was done displaying. There is a timing issue with the new font and this did bother me a bit for a hack that aimed to be perfect.

Here is my real problem with this game that I'm surprised nobody bothered to address all these years. There is no such thing as a perfect game thanks to Nintendo's decision about a perfect photo album. You have to die once and be called a THIEF for the rest of the game in order to obtain all the photos. Because of this, I always chose to leave that one photo blank in the album. Hence, no such thing as a perfect save file in my opinion. It would have been nice to have this corrected where the store owner doesn't kill you and where you're not labelled a THIEF for the rest of the game.

I thought about keeping this hack but ultimately decided to just stick with the original. It's not a bad hack so you either like it or you pass.

Great complilationCountBuggula2019-10-07Version 1.1

I've used all the individual hacks here for a long time together, but was never able to get them to play completely nicely and had some garbled text issues. Great work here on getting this all in one easy hack so we can have all the QoL improvements without any nasty side-effects! I've already played through the dungeon 6 and am happy to report no issues or problems at all. Highly recommended as the new default way anyone would enjoy this classic.

I found the correct file to patch finally.

And yes I highly recommend it.

I even use the optional patch.

It does what it claims.

Definitve Link's Awakening patch, must have!MattKimura2019-09-21Version 1.0

Hands down the best way to experience the original Link's Awakening. This patch is essential to the game, it does everything the game needed. The biggest quality of life improvement has to be the removal of text popups, that happen more often than not in the original game. Especially when picking up Guardian Acorns and Pieces of Power. Thanks to all the work from the RH community, the ultimate patch was born combining everything into one. I couldn't be any happier! I would recommend everyone who has a Link's Awakening DX rom to use this patch and never look back on the unpatched game. Spread the word on this hack, it's one of the most beneficial hacks out there. Also I recommend using the optional print button overlay patch for viewing photographs clean.

One thing I wish for is to have the Guardian Acorn/Piece of Power music removed. Every time I accidentally pick one up, it overrides the dungeon music and all I can hear is the same repetitive music with a short loop over and over. Not even the remake removed this. RIP dungeon music. We'll never receive the quality of life features of the remake, but the original is a classic and it's still playable to this day.
