| Best Metroid QoL improvement | laserlambert | 2021-11-26 | Version 7.37f |
All aiming issues seem completely fixed as of 7.37f version, so I think that this is now the best QoL improvement version of Super Metroid Out there!
| A "Just Right" Update | lastdual | 2019-12-31 | Version 7.34 |
I love quality-of-life hacks that update a game in subtle yet impactful ways, all while preserving the overall feel of the original. Turbo does just that, and the updates here are so welcome as to make vanilla Super Metroid virtually obsolete (blasphemy, I know). Past attempts at doing this usually altered the game a bit too much for my taste (or were lacking a needed addition such as Control Freak), but this hack hits that "just right" feel that makes it really hard to go back once you've experienced it. The optional patches are also appreciated. Whether you're doing your 200th run of the game of diving in for the first time, Super Metroid Turbo is sure to enhance your experience.
| Welcome improvements for replaying the game | MattKimura | 2019-12-17 | Version 7.33 |
This hack is essential for replaying Super Metroid. It's got improvements for the sake of making the game better to play again in future playthroughs. I can agree with all improvements that were added so I have nothing against anything this hack offers. It's Super Metroid as you know and love it, but with many quality of life improvements that even newcomers can enjoy. No reason to play the original Super Metroid without this patch. I really appreciate the optional patch to start off on planet Zebes, I've seen the beginning of the game SO many times and I got tired of replaying that part. As long as I keep the original ROM around, I won't actually lose this part forever. It makes the beginning parts less of a chore, and I'm glad I don't have to worry about the beginning cut scene that can't be skipped. I like how The X-ray visors vision is widened so it unveils the whole screen at once. Beats having to slowly look up and down to find breakable walls. Overall this hack is great, I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to casually replay the game for the hundredth time. Knowing where to go and using this hack, I was able to get to the end of the game faster than usual at about 2 hours (not a speed runner). The faster screen transition speed makes a big difference compared to the original speed. Because of this, I'd only recommend this hack to casual players and not speed runners since they're only allowed to play the game by official means. But this does make a good way to practice.
| The right touch | andrewclunn | 2019-11-07 | Version 7.3 |
This is basically a whole lot of quality of life hacks that make it really difficult to go back to the original afterwards. Honestly the only tweak to gameplay that I think still remains would be a slightly more forgiving wall-jump, and then this would be totally in line with the more streamlined GBA games. There was a problem with other auto run patches, in that it (rightfully) delayed the running speed kick in, which makes certain areas impossible to do without building up speed through means that are not "standard playthrough." This hack addresses that by reducing the time to activate the speed boosters so that, even if you haven't hit max speed yet, you can still boost to get through (which, ala project base no longer drains your life). Not a huge fan of the sped up transitions, but there are optional patches to remove that. Overall the best way to go back and experience the original that presently exist.
