Hack description

This is a minor modification for Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin that adds the darkness effect that was only used in a few rooms to the entire game in order to add a little atmosphere and challenge to the exploration. Not for people who like the game to be easy. This mod can be used by itself but is designed to be work with LagoLunatic's DSVania Randomizer: https://retrohackers.net/utility-details.php?id=1316/

Apply to a clean rom BEFORE using the DSvania randomizer using xDeltaUI: https://retrohackers.net/utility-details.php?id=598/

Known bugs:
-Some cut-scenes as well as teleporter rooms will cause the darkness to appear buggy.
-Occasionally some rooms may not load the darkness effect at all, likely due to an overflow of objects in the room or on screen at once. Most noticeable in the Dark Academy area
-Some background objects or visual things had to be removed from some rooms to make room for the darkness effect. Such as the red moon in some of the outdoor areas of The Forgotten City

The creation of this mod was only possible using LagoLunatic's DSVania editor: https://retrohackers.net/utility-details.php?id=1271/

What Variety?Morinis2019-12-28Version 1.0

I'm really not sure on what variety the creator of this 'hack' was going for. Too ambitious maybe.

Played this and felt that nothing was greatly changed other than a black blob around the character with a poke hole for you to see the sprite in.

Like most other mediocre Castlevania hacks out there that offer change, this falls into the same category. Doesn't offer much of anything but an overused gimmick.

Does the opposite of its intentifightdragons2019-12-27Version 1.0

First things first, like so many other hacks on here, it's mislabeled as an Improvement hack. It's an Addendum/Addition.

The main problem is that the hack does not add variety in exploration, like the description claims. It does the exact opposite, by making the entire game constrained around the exact same gimmick. How is that by any sense of the word, variety?
