| BoF - War of the Goddess patch... | scottbeck79 | 2023-02-14 | Version 2.0 |
Personally, if I'm going to play old RPGs I want something that is going to make it more playable, less of a waste of my time. Turn 40 hours into 30, etc etc etc... The bosses and sub bosses, sure, ramp up their difficulty. I'm all for that but IF you're going to do so, it would be better to be done in the manner in which patches that were done to BoF 1 & 2 were done while giving the option of having that added difficulty. See Breath of Fire IV uncensored & restoration also. These games take long enough as it is so in my opinion, getting people to play them or missed out on them for whatever reason 20-30 years back to now be able to play them with added amenities is much more desirable. That all being said, I can certainly appreciate your efforts in wanting to improve a game like this but I think it would be better to make it more playable before making it much more difficult. My approach is from a purely outside view of someone playing the game who also has a life and responsibilities so for the little time I get for leisure the last thing I want to do is play something that I'm getting nothing out of. While I love video games, especially old school RPGs, adding MORE hours to one game (on top of added frustration) isn't something anyone who values their time wants to do and that is the main reason why I have never even attempted a game like Disgaea - 100+ hours?! No thank you! I could barely play through another Final Fantasy III as a teenager and that was only 40+ hours. I can't really recommend this because for someone like me, this is too much frustration when I'm getting nothing out of it.
| Cheat mode (for the enemies) | suikoarke | 2021-03-27 | Version 1.0 |
I reached as far as the volcano boss and called it quits. If there was a need for a hard mode, this would probably be something that fills that role. However, instead of a hard mode, I think it's more accurate to call this one an enemy cheat mode. Nearly all encounters from start to finish have a fatal danger involved and any bad luck of the draw and instantly wipe your party or leave it in shambles where the next battle will wipe it clean. It isn't so much that the enemies now have twice as much HP (or more) nor that there are more enemies in a single battle, it's that nearly all enemies now have access to broken abilities that can cripple or outright one-shot your members. Not to mention they also seem to have higher stats now, again, enough to one-shot your members. But that's just normal enemies. When it comes to bosses, it gets much worse. Besides stat boosts, they also have new abilities similar to normal enemies. Some of their abilities may make for an interesting fight, but for many, they just cause frustration. My number one complaint is simply this, many of them now have Astral Warp now. Why? The reason I stopped at the volcano was because it was getting simply too ridiculous. Getting critical countered by Gisshan who does a ton of physical damage to Ryu with the best armor and dealing over 200 damage is where I gave up. Your party members are nerfed while all enemies and bosses have been substantially buffed. That's way too imbalanced. It stopped being fun when I had to overtrain Beyd in order to survive Zig's attacks. Only to find that I needed to surpass that because Beyd needed even more stats to survive Zig's critical hits. That's my opinion on this hack. It simply buffs the enemies and bosses far more than they needed to be, making what made the game fun into a frustrating mess.
| Hasn't wow'd me so far | winterelegy | 2020-06-14 | Version 1.0 |
I've played this through Momo's tower and so far it hasn't really impressed me. The readme indicates there are some seemingly interesting changes, so I'll try it again later in the game, but so far it's just made the early game more tedious.
So overall, in the early game I haven't found this to improve the experience. I think it might play better once you have a stable party of decent characters, but fighting big packs with tons of hp as only ryu, ryu/nina or rya/nina/momo is a chore. That said, if you're looking for random encounters to last a really long time than this hack might be of interest to you.
