Hack description

(This mod now works on real hardware without a gecko code, but a couple extra sound effects still won't play correctly unless played on Dolphin, but it's otherwise perfectly playable and enjoyable on a Gamecube.)

The Super Luigi Sunshine mod has been a thing for quite some time, but there was no simple way to get this mod until this xdelta was created.

The mod started by just replacing Mario's model with the Luigi model from Super Mario 64 DS, but a custom model to fit the Sunshine theme was eventually created along with many other features. In addition to converting these assets into a simple xdelta patch, new features have been added as well, including Luigi voice-clips!

(Please remember that editing Super Mario Sunshine sound effects is still a very buggy process and that a few sound effects, Luigi's voice or not, may not play or play distorted.)

Previously worked on by:

Melonspeedruns,
Nibroc.Rock,
Kaio,
GeoshiTheRed,
stomatol,
Quasmok,

New features made by:

Wizard,
Yoshi2

Full permission was given for Nintendo 64 Wizard or anyone else of with interest to continue this mod when the assets were released by Marionova64 here at the request of Melonspeedruns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPCaZ_li4iY

New Features (Ver 5.1):

- The mod now works on console without a gecko cheat.
- All the FLUDD nozzles now render correctly.
- The HUD icons for the hover, rocket, and turbo nozzles now have more accurate coloring to their corresponding models.
- Luigi is now given a fire flower necklace to wear in place of the sun shirt.
- A bug where graffiti 'M's instead of graffiti 'L's still showed up on mission 7 of Sirena Beach was fixed.
- A bug where a random NPC in Delfino Plaza sometimes still called the graffiti 'L's graffiti 'M's was fixed.

What it doesn't feature (yet):

- The pre-rendered cut-scenes still have Mario. (They probably always will due to the extremely difficult rendering it would take to fix, unfortunately.)
- The FLUDD when not worn on Luigi's back shows up like its original non-Poltergust 3000 counterpart. (That model acts up if you try to edit it.)
- The Luigi model doesn't get dirty when slipping in goop. (Except the 'L' on his hat, which seems to have a property that allows it to get dirty.)
- The level entry portals are still "M"s instead of "L"s. (That model also acts up when you try to edit it.)
- The goop originally at Delfino Airstrip is still in the shape of a Mario head with an "M" above it instead of a Luigi head with an "L" above it. (There might be a way to fix this, but the question is: Would that make the mod not viable for speedrunning? Because no matter how slight, that would be a gameplay change rather than just an aesthetic change.)
- Luigi's hands don't close while jumping. (This would require assembly coding to the best of my understanding, which is very difficult.)
- The particles Luigi turns into when entering some level portals or spawning in some levels are still light blue and red instead of dark blue and green. (The model for these particles has yet to be located in the ISO.)

Addressing a couple complaints this mod has gotten:

- Shadow Luigi is supposed to resemble Gooigi; his bright green color is not the result of a modding limitation.
- Due to multiple complaints, the shines may be reverted to their yellow color if enough people vote on it.
- The title screen is modeled after the European version because this mod originally had a European lead developer and won't be changed until someone can provide a North American version that looks at least just as good.

If anyone is able to improve this hack by adding anything listed as lacking, send Nintendo 64 Wizard the new asset(s) (and explain how you made them) at OnePieceOnlineRPG@gmail.com

If the asset(s) are quality enough to be in this mod, the creator's name will be added to the credits, both on this page and in-game.

(Unfortunately, the xdelta patch must be downloaded offsite because files exceeding 30MB in size are not permitted onsite.)

Added a custom title on GameTDB and added the Title ID to be "GLSE01"

Updated ReviewTobim0de2022-05-11Version 5.1

Since my last review, this mod made huge progress. It turns out pretty good, 5.0 ran on my Gamecube via Swiss while 5.1 doesn't really boot, thought I'd mention that.

I'd change the shine colors back to yellow, because it just looks kinda off in green. Mario's Shines weren't red, they were yellow.

Other than that, very good hack, I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Sunshine.

Great hack but could use a few tweaksGarfieldCat2021-07-23Version 5.1

"The FLUDD when not worn on Luigi's back shows up like its original non-Poltergust 3000 counterpart" is what the description says. Bringing back the original F.L.U.D.D. would rule out this problem, and it would also better fit the theme of Isle Delfino.

The shines are supposed to represent the sun with the color yellow, by giving light to the island. The green shines just don't seem right in the context of the story of SMS.

Shadow Luigi is supposed to look like a shadow, not bright green like Gooigi. The Gooigi texture choice just doesn't seem like evil or dark, it just seems like a piece of lime green taffy.

These are all just suggestions, and I understand this is difficult work. Great job on the hack by the way. Again, just suggestions.

Updated Review of Luigi SunshineGaratchten2021-02-12Version 5.0

Shadow Luigi looks like lime candy, should just use the same texture from Shadow Mario's model and add a slight green tint or no tint at all. Just needs to not look like candy.

Peach still has some sound clips where she says "Mario"

Polter-FLUDD hover icon isn't accurate to the model; the model is all red where the water squirts out, but the icon shows silver where the water squirts out.

Mario's hands make a fist when he jumps but not when he's running; Luigi does not make a fist when jumping and when he running. Luigi supposed to make fist when jumping.

The title screen is the European version with smaller "Sunshine" words instead of American with the big "S"

The level enter particles for the Luigi are still red and light blue instead of green and dark blue.

Also, when Luigi hops aboard Yoshi, the Squirt Nozzle changes shape and some colors.

The other nozzle icons in the HUD besides Squirt, are inaccurate when it comes to color. All of them besides the Squirt Nozzle, are more pink than red.

Luigi's model isn't affected by water or goop. He looks exactly the same when this happens with no goop all over him or being wet and dripping.

The shines are supposed to resemble the SUN. They should stay the yellow color, because there is no reason. I know you guys or whoever is reading this are trying to fit the Luigi theme, but there is no point of making all shines green.

Some CPUs still say Mario.

The normal FLUDD is way better than Polter-FLUDD, and it should be put back on Luigi's back and change the icons.

Other than these issues that weren't mentioned, this hack is still cool.

Great quality hack with some issueschromosomeman2020-08-01Version 4.6.8

  • Update 4.4.6
  • Great to see a Luigi hack in Sunshine, finally he's playable in almost every 3D Mario game. The author has been doing a good job so far balancing new additions with bug fixes but it seems the game currently remains unfinishable with this hack. Unfortunately Pinna Park seems to be a problematic level as even with the recent patch to fix Episode 1, I cannot enter the park in Episode 3 to collect the red coins due to crashing upon entering it. Really hoping the hack reaches a completely playable state eventually, because this would be a really good way to switch up my playthrough of Sunshine.

    • Update 4.6.8

The author has done a good job fixing bugs that would cause crashes in numerous levels and that has to be commended. The only level I cannot complete due to crashing is Sirena Beach Episode 7, which I can confirm happens on multiple different Dolphin builds I've tried. Other than that small developments and touches have been made to integrate Luigi into the game more and that can be appreciated. Good luck to the author on finishing this project.

Awesome hack, slight audio issue in Bianco HillsVHAOB2020-05-03Version 4.3.3

When I was a kid playing this game, I was always dying to play as Luigi. 14 years later, here I am finally having that dream realized. While it isn't perfect, it sure is getting close.

As I said in the title, one pesky bug can be found in Bianco Hills. The singing blue Pokeys make a loud, distorted, robotic sound instead of their usual sound effect. To be specific, it is only when they are bouncing around normally, not when they are buried when a player gets too close, or when stunned after being sprayed. I am not sure what causes this, but I wanted to point it out.

    Otherwise, great hack. 10/10
