Database match: Pokemon - Red Version (USA, Europe) (SGB Enhanced)Hack description
This is a hack of Pokémon Red and Blue Version (USA, Europe) that swaps the backsprites with those found in the Pokémon Gold and Silver 1997 Space World demo. The backsprites are noticeably higher quality and actually fit the style of the Red/Blue frontsprites! No other changes have been made to the game.Screenshots

| We need this for Yellow! My definitive way of playing generation 1. | Mrocker | 2024-04-25 | Version 1.0 |
The biggest charm of the Spaceworld '97 sprites in this ROM hack lies in their ability to seamlessly blend with the original art style while adding a fresh twist. Unlike a direct replication of Generation 2 graphics, these sprites pay homage to the Spaceworld '97 prototype's aesthetic, capturing the essence of the original Pokémon designs while introducing subtle enhancements. This approach preserves the nostalgic appeal of the classic sprites while infusing them with a touch of modernity, creating a visually striking experience that stays true to the spirit of the original games seamlessly. This is my definitive way to play Pokémon Red and Blue. Growing up with Generation 2 games, I became accustomed to their clean and artistic sprites that resembled the anime. Despite my love for the charm of the original sprites, I struggled with their clarity, feeling like I needed glasses to see the back sprites. I used to play Generation 1 games with a Generation 2 graphics patch, but finding this ROM hack feels like a dream come true—it retains the legitimacy of the original while enhancing the visuals to match Generation 2. However, my quest for improved sprites doesn't end there; I've attempted to use the Pokémon Yellow disassembly, but with no success. I long for a similar hack for Pokémon Yellow, as its back sprites remain a sore point for me. While Yellow Legacy promises reworked back sprites, I yearn for a solution like the one found in this ROM hack. If anyone knows of such a hack for Pokémon Yellow, please reach out—I'm eager to enhance my gaming experience even further.

There are a few hacks for Red and Blue that replace the art with the art from Gold, Silver and Crystal, but this is the first hack I've seen that embraces the weird art style from the first games. Things still look goofy, but the higher resolution just makes the sprites fit in so much better. The only gripe I have with it is that the hack isn't compatible with the full color hacks available for the games - I think this hack + full color + Emu Edition would make a great combination. As it is, the hack performs as advertised and is a solid upgrade to Red and Blue.
