Best Zelda hack if you want to "replay" NES Zelda againRoom552024-07-21Version 3.4

Love this hack as it's exactly what I was looking for.. faithful to the original but with new dungeon layouts but more importantly, hidden areas being totally relocated and not just randomized. It makes for a fresh replay if you know NES Zelda too well and want to relive the experience again.

On that note, I just started the 2nd quest and man does the difficulty take a huge jump.. lol. Still highly recommended!

Too Many Soft Locks in the OverworldDippy-Dawg2024-07-17Version 3.4

I loved the graphics, the new music, and the change of the Dungeon Masters. The hack was going great. That was until I found about a half dozen places in the Overworld that caused the game to Soft Lock. I sent the main programmer a couple of messages via the website and I have never heard back. With the aforementioned in mind, I cannot recommend this hack.

Something very cool!lexluthermiester2024-07-14Version 3.4

One could reasonably say that this mod patch makes for the definitive version of the classic game. I've been watching this project since it began. It started out as something with a few solid ideas and became something wonderfully special!

Whether you're a veteran of NES gaming or someone new to this generation of games, this is the version of Legend of Zelda you should play.

Download, patch your game, play, enjoy!

A high quality hack!Insane Mame Gamer (IMG)2023-07-27Version 3.2

A very polished and high quality hack for the most part. My only complaint with it was that the levels were kind of short. What I really like particularly about this one is there are quite a few areas to bomb for rupees, power-ups and various items. During my play through which took me around a couple days I used a patch for infinite bombs and infinite arrows and it made for a very smooth and quite enjoyable playing experience. I highly recommend it!

Excellent and original hack of Zelda 1dreamvast2023-01-05Version 3.1

Couldn't wait to play it every day. Almost everything about this hack feels classy and clean. It is fun to see how things are arranged differently and the order of item attainment keeps it fresh.

Fresh new must playmarkandmatt2022-11-15Version 3.0

Looks like some of these reviews are outdated...

We LOVED this one. Clean graphics, casual difficulty, and a traditional hunt for all the essential items and locations.

All 9 dungeons are new.

The hints for the lost spots are solid - just read them. Now look at them again!

If you know the original LOZ inside out, we recommend you add the burn and bomb patch (super subtle) and add the patch to remove the mini map. Makes level 9 hunting way cooler!

Wish there was a second quest, but this is still a must play if you're going through all the good hacks (like we are)!

I really enjoyed this game!Venkman7282021-10-24Version 2.8

This hack was exactly what I wanted. After finishing the first quest today, I felt compelled to write a positive review. The first quest is about the same level of difficulty as the original. The overworld is familiar, but everything is shuffled around a bit. Basically, it scratches the nostalgia itch and also makes the player think a little to figure out the game. Levels 1-8 are all original, and 9 is the same as the original game. The visual upgrade is a welcome change; it's obvious the creator put some work into this hack. The other tweaks are a welcome change, too. The select button changes your B item, and Likelikes eat rupees instead of shields. The only things that totally stumped me were the Lost Hills clue and the entrance to level 9. Give this hack a shot; it's a great way to enjoy a classic in a fresh way.

A visually and technically impressive mod.Coppermustache2021-04-07Version 2.5

The creator has done some great work with the sprites, not just the enemies but also the environment and animations have been greatly improved. But the most impressive accomplishment of the author is the addition of a working minimap that actually shows the terrain is very impressive. It's just a shame that the overworld has barely been changed at all, but that isn't too bad since all of the dungeons and caves have been moved to different places.

I think it's a great hack, exploring the old overworld feels fresh again. It's just important to know that the boomerang can defeat most enemies, not just the bats.

Great hack, but...Brianashton802021-04-04Version 2.5

Complaints about starting with the boomerang are dumb. This is great, as I have grown accustomed to playing LOZ without getting the wooden sword anyway. Being able to kill enemies with the boomerang is a plus, and probably too easy if you use rapid fire. Herd the mob, and you can knock out the whole gang with a boomerang.

Tracking down the new locations for shops, rupees, heart containers, and dungeons was fun, but where the heck is 9? The clue for Lost Woods/Lost Hills makes no sense. I figured out Lost Hills after an hour of trying different combos of paths. Never figured the woods out. I noticed a strange thing happening in the far upper left corner of the map, where about 5 tiles over, things seems misaligned and no weapons seem to work. I tried the ocarina, bombs, fire, throwing boomerangs, arrows, and swords at it, nothing. What gives? I'll keep playing till I figure out. Unless someone wants to give a clue to the clue. What's missing?

Eh.gravitygoesup12020-10-14Version 2.3

I wrote a review of this hack that was kind of harsh, but it was for an earlier version (2.1). I saw that the new version was 2.3, and I decided to give it another chance because there's probably stuff that's been tweaked.

Upon starting the game, I again noticed how nice the game looks. The sprites and tiles are done really well and it feels like a Zelda game. The animations are fine as well. The color changes make it easier on the eyes and give the world a more natural feel.

But there was still the issue of starting with the boomerang. Like I said before, I don't feel like smashing the attack button a thousand times to kill stuff. There is no difference to the start of the game other than this simple switch, but I wasn't surprised there. The boomerang does 1/4 the damage of the sword, so 1-hit enemies take 4 hits and 4 hit enemies take 16 hits. That means if there's six blue archer dogs on the screen, you have to press the attack button 96 times in order to kill all of them. Nice.

Since I didn't feel like grinding through this again and dying over and over, I put it down. I enjoy challenge, but playing it made me physically fatigued, and I'd like to kill the enemies and move on to the next screen rather than waste time spamming B.

If you want a challenge, this is the game for you. I wouldn't recommend it for most people because of the simple reason that it's just a grind to get items and rupees...the boomerang makes the time to kill enemies much longer.

Nice creativity - Never Feel Lostultimaweapon2020-10-06Version 2.1

You can definitely see the creativity in this hack. Never have I felt lost and couldn't find my way around. Level designs were great except 7-9 since there were the original dungeons. Not losing your Magical Shield was a welcomed bonus. The only issue I found was the clues for escaping the Lost Woods and Lost Mountains. There were way too vague and hard to understand.

Author has great creativity, so I'd like to see him in a future update do new dungeon layouts for 7-9. Overall a great hack and highly recommended.

Amazing Hackyounes2020-09-08Version 2.1

Amazing Hack, loved the game play, how its complex and gives you a challenge. The select button to change items was a great idea and the map is great too. The dungeons are great. Well done on an Amazing Hack

Great graphics and fresh starting experienceAldenTapasya2020-04-05Version 1.1

[v1.0] The new graphics look wonderful and the automap is very useful! I also appreciate the dialogue changes, they are for the better in most cases.

However, there is one major issue: the Bow is nowhere to be found! It's not in level 1 (where you find the sword instead, due to starting with the boomerang) and the rest of the game is the same, so it's impossible to kill Gohma and beat the game. And yes, I have searched everywhere in level 1.

If this is fixed, I'll be happy to recommend this romhack, because it's a much-needed update.

[v1.1 edit] And now that the Bow has been added properly to the game, its sole glaring issue is gone! The peculiar solution of selling the Bow and Arrow in different shops allows players to assemble the weapon without needing to step into a dungeon. Between this and the Boomerang as a starting weapon, you can expect the early game to feel quite different.
