Hack description

Final Fantasy VI: Revised Old Style Edition is a thorough and nostalgic revision of the text and presentation of Final Fantasy VI.

The purpose of the hack is to refine FF6's surface-level elements according to the standard set by the PS1-era FF titles (e.g. FF Origins), while preserving the scope and difficulty of the game as Square designed it. This is a classic improvement-type hack intended for newcomers and veterans alike.

The dialog script has been revised based on multiple translation efforts, both official (SNES/Woolsey, GBA/Slattery) and unofficial (kWhazit, Tomato, Lina Darkstar, et al.). It aims to combine the completeness and accuracy of the GBA with the energy and pacing of the SNES, sans censorship. Much of the official English text is retained in the updated script, particularly where the SNES and GBA agree closely with one another. When unofficial sources are used, the wording is adapted as necessary to maintain cohesion with the overall script.

FF6:ROSE introduces two major advancements in its localization:

The hack is built on C. V. Reynold's Bug-Fix Compilation patch. It also includes decensored graphics and multiple quality-of-life enhancements. Several of the new features have either been developed from scratch or updated by the author specifically for this hack. A considerable amount of original technical work and attention to detail have gone into making this a uniquely polished and uncompromising FF6 experience.

Please see the Readme file for a full list of features.

Additional screenshots and script info can be found at the project webpage.

FF6:ROSE has been made possible by the work of many, many FF6 fans and hackers over the years, to whom the author is greatly indebted. See the Readme file for a full list of acknowledgments.

Archive includes .ips patches for both headered and unheadered ROMs.

Gold Standard for Improvement HacksRoSoDude2024-05-28Version 1.15

I used FF6 ROSE for my first playthrough of the game. The original SNES release was known to have many game-breaking glitches and a rushed English localization that was known for its flair but also for its many mistranslations. While the GBA version fixed many bugs and featured a more accurate translation alongside some new optional content, it suffered from the lack of a dedicated sound chip, overly brightened visuals for the unlit GBA screen, and some condensed controls. The pixel remaster is probably the most adequate version out of the box, though changes to its aesthetics and music can by no means be described as straight upgrades. By all accounts, ROSE is the definitive version of FF6, with no compromises in graphics, sound, gameplay, or story.

ROSE's revised localization incorporates material from two official translations of the game along with fan sources and custom rewrites. The writing was very natural and seems to retain a lot of the stylistic flair of the Woolsey's SNES translation but with the mistranslations and continuity errors fixed. The fully annotated script is proudly displayed on the project webpage for anyone looking to compare. Finally, a new monospace font allows for full ability and enemy names without abbreviation, which brings the SNES version of FF6 in line with other releases.

The game's interface has seen some notable improvements. The player can press Y to swap between the equip and relic menus, which makes gearing up multiple parties considerably more convenient. The esper menu replaces MP costs with icons to show which espers a character has mastered (the MP cost is still visible in the submenu for each individual esper). The ability menu shows Blitz names alongside their input combos, displays new rages for Gau to learn on the Veldt in greyed-out text, rages and lores are now listed alphabetically, and text descriptions have been added for rages and dances.

ROSE incorporates CV Reynold's bugfix compilation patch, which features over 200 patches for both minor and critical bugs. While the memory-corrupting Sketch bug, Vanish-doom glitch, and psycho-Cyan glitch are well-known, other issues like the magic evasion stat doing nothing, Setzer's Fixed Dice ignoring halved damage from the master's scroll relic, the Genji Glove relic not reducing damage by 25% as intended, and many more affecting gameplay balance are fixed.

ROSE features a few other gameplay enhancements. Similar to the PSX/GBA versions, there is a default sprint available with the B button. Equipping the sprint shoes relic doubles speed for walking and sprinting, and timed challenges tick twice as fast when the player is sprinting (I found this a bit too harsh, but it is probably justified for balance). There is also a very handy improvement for Cyan's bushido command which allows the user to suspend the gauge and swap to another character, and then resume charging the bushido command when returning to Cyan. I think this is a much better solution than the one implemented by the pixel remaster or by other ROMhacks, as it retains the original gameplay concept but enables new strategic use of the command.

All in all, ROSE is an extremely competent patch that addresses the game's shortcomings while leaving its original design intact. New and old players alike can't go wrong with this patch.

Great Way to Experience it the 1st time!Xezcente2023-09-07Version 1.13

My first time playing the game and picked this hack because of the care that was put into creating this mod. Just reading the change log and you can tell how much the author really invested on this one.

I have a hard time picking up a different FF6 Hack because I'm so used to this one. Even the Spell/Item/Weapon and Armor names are written fully on the menu (e.g."Thundaga" fitting on the menu screen??? - THAT'S AWESOME)

Such a great way to experience FF6 the first time (especially since the author didn't change the story/gameplay, just improved its aspect). Thank you so much!

1st time play thruFuji2023-02-22Version 1.11

Having read about this game for many years, I finally decided to play it - and boy, what a game! I'm sure the vanilla version is just fine but this felt very smooth and refined and I enjoyed the translation. Story-wise, this has to rank up there with Chrono Trigger as one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

Pure Awesomedarkmage2023-02-21Version 1.11

As someone who worked hard on a project like this for a few years but couldn't fulfill my vision, I am beyond gratified not only to see that this project is real, but it has created a close-to-ideal improvement for a game that I have loved for decades. The change list is comprehensive, the list of bugs fixed is on par with what I was attempting and what CV Reynolds has achieved

I am at the beginning of a playthrough now, and so far I am liking the script changes and the font is a much nicer rendition of Chicago than the original. I'm excited to see this through, and it's looking like this might be a more definitive experience than even a modded Pixel Remaster. Good job SilentEnigma!

Better than GBA port.IAMNOTRANA2021-11-06Version 1.07

Basically community fixes and proper translation under one umbrella. I'm almost done with my playthrough and there isn't much to complain but praise for every little thing patch bring. Thank you for making this. It really makes definitive way to experience FF6 for both new and veterans.

if I've to make one complain then it would be minor translation error in the beginning when Terra is rescued by a "Old Man" he's named as "Older Man" which sounds.. bit off. Correct term would be "Elderly Man" or just simple "Old Man" imho.

One patch for bug fixes plus revised translationIndianaRoy2021-05-20Version 1.06

This is a great way to play the game it makes a translation that incorporate something from every other translation, official and non official. I first play the game in the GBA and then played the SNES one and I liked them both, regarding the translations I liked somethings more in one and other stuff in the other. And I think this patch does a great job at taking the best of them. It incorporates many bugs fixes and quality of life enhancements, including the ones from C. V. Reynolds Bug-Fix Compilation. And the decensored graphics it's a great plus.

It makes a one single patch to fix bugs, make some QOL changes, decensored graphics and apply a translation more up to date without throwing the others away.
