| I dig this hack | Googie | 2020-05-13 | Version 1.3 |
Everything is really cool in this hack, I'm glad that it's put together like this. It really does feel like a definitive edition, if it was me that put this together I woulda used the SMB1 lullaby music instead. This is a nice base to use for future hacks, and in 1.3 the bouncy fireballs are in there. Now to test these in some SMB3 editors. Smooth job on this hack. :)
| What on earth was the creator of this hack thinking? | theNightStar | 2020-05-12 | Version 1.2 |
Lots of great improvements, and seems like a great hack, right? But then the fireballs shoot forward and don't bounce. It's amazing how one, bizarrely poor decision can render a ton of great work undone and essentially worthless. I can't even fathom the decision making process that would lead anyone to think this was somehow a good idea, at all. Especially mixed in with so many other wonderful improvements. Changing the fireballs to something that is just so un-Mario is baffling and annoying beyond measure, and essentially ruins whatever experience this hack was apparently going for as a so-called "improvement". It really is a shame. This had so much promise, and could have been good. But in the end, it's about as useful as a hack of Mega Man where the buster shots suddenly behave like the rocks from Friday the 13th on NES and fly at an arc, Ryu's sword from Ninja Gaiden shoots out of his head instead of slashes in front of him, or a Castlevania hack where the whip only goes below him and never in front, while making all other improvements to the game. In the end, who cares, when it's all undone with a single mandatory change that betrays the entire game and makes zero sense. If you're looking for a real Super Mario Bros 3 improvement hack, this ain't it, chief.
| A Great Start in the Right Direction! | beinor | 2020-05-12 | Version 1.3 |
This hack has a good direction behind it, and a good developer. I hope they continue to pursue what a "definitive edition" ought to look like, as they certainly have a vision for it! Also not a fan of the straight-shot fireball mechanic, but that's already been stated in other reviews, albeit in much harsher tones. (hey, how about some of you go and make a hack! lol)
| Good set but not a fan of the straight shot. | LPinkerton | 2020-05-11 | Version 1.2 |
Honestly, the straight fireball shot sorta kills this pack and should really be an optional part. For myself, the bouncing fireball is just a defining part of Mario. A 'Definitive Edition' really should be an enhancement to the original, but changing this one mechanic really effects way too much of the feel of the game.
