Hack description

Majora's Mask Redux is a hack that aims to improve the original experience of Majora's Mask by adding some QoL improvements by applying the ASM patches provided by the Majora's Mask Randomizer project by Saneki and its contributors.

Documentation for the majority of the features can be seen here:
- Zelda64 Redux Documentation by ShadowOne333

----

Main Features:

- D-PAD can now be used to access all three transformation masks and the ocarina, allowing a total of seven items to be accessible at all times. Note that this means that the map is no longer possible to toggle off. NB: In the download there are included two patches: both provide the exact same changes except for the position of the D-PAD HUD (left or right on the screen).
- When using the bow, magic arrows can be cycled in a similar fashion to wind waker's magic arrows by setting one and pressing the "R" button.
- Ocarina can now be used underwater as Zora Link.
- Increased block pushing speed.
- Increased Mikau pushing speed to shore.
- Correct Purple and Gold rupee colors.
- Permanent Razor Sword.
- 4th Piece of Heart Sound Effect fix by ozidual (Fix Publicly available: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/zelda64/mm-piece-of-heart-sequence-numbers-t969.html?sid=be5374d9252ef4f5c14b2678f97f5b30#p10168 )
- - Mushroom Bottle Get Item fix by fkualol (Fix Publicly available: https://wiki.cloudmodding.com/mm/Talk:Ovl_player_actor/Get_Items )
- Restored Title Screen colors to match that of the Japanese title screen (ZELDA in purple, THE LEGEND OF & MAJORA'S MASK in a yellow-ish color)
- Text script revisions and restorations from other MM versions (including Japanese v1.0, PAL and even from Majora's Mask 3D)
- Retranslations for the Great Bay Turtle, Lulu's Diary and Deku Butler's texts, localized based on the Japanese release.
- Missing or misplaced Sound Effects that play alongside the script have been properly restored
- Unused Area titles missing in MM (U) v1.0 from MM (J) v1.0 have been restored, and well as new ones added back based on Majora's Mask 3D.
- Uncensored Skull Kid face and beak ported from MM (J) v1.0.
- Cleansed Southern Swamp map object fixes ported from the Poisoned Swamp map data from MM (U) v1.0.
- Restored the Deku Palace grottos route, ported from MM (J) v1.0.
- Move the Bomber Kid when doing the Hide & Seek to be next to the bell in East Clock Town, ported from MM (J) v1.0.
- Zora Physics ported over from MM (J) v1.0
- Fix the Goht cutscene so he doesn't run over Link, ported from MM (J) v1.1.
- Restore the Shop Music to have its full intro, like in MM (J) v1.0.
- Custom Troupe Leader's Mask item name graphics (and text).
- Custom Romani Ranch fixed sign.
- Comma graphic fix ported from MM PAL.
- Ikana Canyon's Fairy Fountain color fix by Dybbles.
- All vanilla elements (cutscenes, introduction and first cycle, rewards) are retained.

TODO:

- (WIP - Missing code for switching) Custom Ocarina icons for other instruments when Link changes forms (Like in Majora's Mask 3D).
New instruments overwrite unused items, which can be loaded for testing via cheat codes. The C-Button icons, item descriptions, item names and subscreen icons are all in place, all that's needed is the code to make them switch properly when Link changes form:
Slingshot ($0B) for Deku Pipes, Blue Fire ($1C) for Goron Drums, and Hylian Loach ($26) for Zora Guitar. Deku Pipes are completely new, Goron Drums and Zora Guitar are ported over from unused assets from MM (J) v1.0.

Current on-going thread about the Ocarina Icons:

What if you want to have the censored Skull Kid wooden face from the US release?
Or maybe you like the original Deku Palace route instead of the Japanese one?

That and MUCH more can easily be changed, thanks to an amazing software called Patcher64+ Tool, which allows you to toggle whatever feature you want on or off according to your liking, so you can create your own custom Majora's Mask Redux ROM!
You can download the software here if you want to customize your own ROM patch:

- Patcher64+ Tool

The tool depends on a computer with PowerShell support. Windows 10 is recommended, but other OS that can install PowerShell could also be used.

Reviews

Way more features than advertisedHaz2021-09-18Version 2.0

Nothing much to say on this hack really, it's fantastic. Removes all of the old n64 jank and allows the 64 version of MM to stand alongside the 3DS version (with the Restoration mod of course).

Something I think new players should be aware of, though, is that when using Patcher64+ the amount of features here far exceed what the RHDN page entails. I want to list some of the major additions so that you can make an informed choice on whether you want to play this or the modded 3DS version.

  • 16:9 Widescreen
  • Extended Draw distance
  • Customizable sound effects for all instruments and even the low health beep
  • Customizable colours for clothes and UI elements
  • Customizable Hero Mode (with the option of enabling a Master Quest romhack)
  • Customizable Ammo and Wallet capacities (so you can bump them up to more reasonable values like future games/remasters)
  • Countless other tweaks, fixes and restorations for the world, controls, text, literally anything and everything
  • Granular control over all of these options

It's all fantastic work, never touch the original version ever again.

And just like that it surpasses the 3DS versionPurePixels2020-06-06Version 1.1

One thing I liked about Majora's Mask 3D is that it was mechanically far better than the somewhat clunky original MM. I never had a big problem with the various controversial changes, but changes they were nonetheless. This hack vastly improves MM's interface especially by adding additional permanent buttons for the frequently used masks and ocarina. Now you can enjoy the original Majora's Mask but with massively improved inventory management. Great work!

Main Issues of MM Fixed and then someClaudeDixon2020-06-04Version 1.1

Majora's Mask has always been pretty tedious and annoying when it comes to item management, in which you're typically keeping the 3 slots reserved for the 3 transformation masks AND the ocarina, which means not enough room for actual combat/puzzle items like arrows and hookshot. This simple remapping of the masks and ocarina to dpad controls is a total game changer and the game has never been more fun.

Other QoL tweaks like the Zora's transformation water instrument being, you know, usable underwater, or maps you buy from Tingle now being permanent are also appreciated (seriously, at least the minimap should've been a basic feature from the get go, strange how it was not only locked behind an in-game pay wall but you lost it every time you saved and reset the game.)

One odd change I found so far was the trade sequence items no longer being technical "trade" items (after "trading" an item, you still keep said item and can switch back to it despite it now being useless for the sidequest.) Not something that takes away from the hack or casualizes the difficulty by any means, just something I noticed and was puzzled by.

L BUTTON TOGGLES MAP.wiiluvglover642020-05-18Version 1.1

You can toggle the map on and off with the L button. The original game had L or up dpad for map, L button still works.

The improvements in Majora's Mask Redux make the game alot more pleasant. The mask and arrow toggles are fantastic.

The original majora's mask is a downgrade in fairness and accessibility compared to what ocarina was. It is such a treat and a privilege to have a redux version to ease some of the frustration.

Here are some ideas on what would make majora's mask even better:

Keeping all inventory items after travelling back in time. It's especially annoying to lose your beans and have to go to the bean seller.

Include a save anywhere system from ocarina of time, instead or in addition to the default save system.

The two patch options to choose Dpad display on left or right side of the screen is awesome. Having it near the top of screen between the magic meter and c buttons would look good too.

Losing skultulas and dungeon fairies when traveling back in time sucks. Saving these and other items would be so much better.

Running out of time in a dungeon and losing dungeon progress from travelling back in time is not fun. One solution is having time move in the overworld but paused inside the dungeons

Have 3 functions for the inverted song of time: 1. slow time 2. stop time completely 3. rewind time. Have some kind of flashing indicator on the clock or ocarina dpad symbol to remind the player that time has either slowed or stopped so they don't forget to reactivate time.

To avoid waiting around for bombers notebook events to happen the song of double time could be used to choose a specific hour to travel forward to, just like in 3ds version. If you miss an event, use the inverted song of time to rewind back to that event.

extra bottles would be great.

The angry videogame nerd was very accurate in his criticism of the original majora's mask https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VYpryVA5WQQ. If most of the problems he talks about were fixed, then majoras mask would truly rival or surpass Ocarina as the best n64 zelda game.

I am so glad that Maroc and everyone who worked on this dedicated the time and effort to create majoras mask redux and make it publicly available. Thank you so much.

This is the ultimate and best version of Majora's Mask, with some major QOL updates like better and faster inventory management.

Much needed hacks for this gameMattKimura2020-05-06Version 1.0

It's great to finally see an improvement hack for Majora's Mask, something that has never been done before. Taking the quality of life features from the randomizer and adding them to the base game. It makes for a much better experience and I look forward to more hacks from this project in the future. It's so dang great being able to equip masks instantly with the DPAD without having to set it to a C button first. Same for the ocarina, it's much easier to pull out now. Having more space on the c buttons is game changing for me, less time spent equipping items.Topped with faster block pushing, it's these little changes that make pretty big differences. Thanks for the awesome hack!
