Hack description

This hack aims at improving the original experience of Ocarina of Time by adding some QoL improvements by applying the ASM patches provided by the Ocarina of Time Randomizer project by Roman971 and its contributors.
(NOTE: For a full list of the Credits per-dev, please check the ReadMe. Adult Link 3D model made by SkilarBabcock, with permission to use for this project: https://youtu.be/x6MIeEZIsPw)

NB: Use an Ocarina of Time US 1.0 ROM for patching.

----

Main Features:

- Text speed now goes 2 times as fast as the original, matching Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time 3D.
- Text revamp, restored and revised based on subsequent releases of Ocarina of Time.
- Fixed graves behaviour like in subsequent versions.
- Properly center the "Navi" text in the C-Up button.
- Collecting Gold Skulltulla Tokens no longer freezes the player but allows it to continue moving. This is similar to what happens in Majora's Mask spider houses.
- D-PAD can be used to quickly access ocarina and iron/hover boots.
- Rupee color of the rupee count indicator now changes in color to reflect the wallet upgrade possessed.
- Stone of Agony now works even without rumble. An icon will appear over the rupee count when in proximity of a hidden grotto.
- Farore's Wind does not get dispelled through time travel and can be used independently by child and adult Link.
- The bunny hood now works like in Majora's Mask boosting movement speed when worn.
- Bombchu Bowling prizes now appear in fixed order instead of random (Rotation being: piece of heart, purple rupee, bomb bag capacity upgrade, bombs).
- Fishing made easier by guaranteeing biting, but keeps the fish size RNG from the original game.
- Biggoron has you wait 2 days instead of 3 to forge the Biggoron Sword.
- Default Z-targeting is automatically set to HOLD by default.
- Burning Kakariko cutscene now starts by entering Kakariko from any entrance instead of only the main one.
- Song of Storms cooldown is removed, additionally it can be used in every ambient.
- Warp songs and Farore's Wind can now be used inside Gerudo Training Grounds and Ganon's Castle.
- Lab diving heart piece can now be obtained at all times.
- Increased speed of block pushing.
- Subscreen delay fix
- Extended draw distance.
- Requires All Medallions to unlock the bridge for Ganon's Castle (original game only requires Shadow and Spirit).
- Unlocked Tunics for Young Link.
- Updated Young and Adult Link 3D models. Young Link is based on his MM 3D model, and Adult Link is a custom MM Adult Link 3D model made by SkilarBabcock, given permission by him to use for this project: https://youtu.be/x6MIeEZIsPw.
- All other vanilla features (Rewards, Cutscenes and Animations) are retained.

Master Quest Redux:
- Same features as Ocarina of Time Redux by default
- All Dungeons set to Master Quest layouts
- Custom Master Quest title screen
- MQ text dialogue colors
- Change Button Colors: GC OoT Button Colors
- Censored Fire Temple song from v1.2 and GC releases
- Censored Gerudo textures from v1.2 and GC releases
- Censored blood (Green) from v1.2 and GC releases

----

But what if you want to have the censored Fire Temple in OoT Redux, and not exclusive to the Master Quest patch?
Or you want the censored Gerudo textures, or you want a higher text speed (like 3x) or want certain features, and not others?

That can easily be changed, thanks to an amazing software called Patcher64+ Tool, which allows you to toggle whatever feature you want on or off according to your liking, so you can create your own custom Ocarina of Time / Master Quest Redux ROM!
You can download the software here if you want to customize your own ROM patch:

- Patcher64+ Tool

The tool depends on a computer with PowerShell support. Windows 10 is recommended, but other OS that can install PowerShell could also be used.

A must-have for every OoT fan out thereBimmy Lee2023-07-09Version 2.2

QoL improvements such as increased speed of block pushing, customizable sprites (MM's Link in OoT? You sold me!), customizable sounds (no more low-health beep. Thank God!), faster text speed, censored content restored, fixes here and there... This hack is a gift for anyone who calls himself an OoT fan. Plus, you can use that wonderful tool called Patcher64+ in case you need to change those little things you're not a particular fan of (I'm watching you, Fire Temple chanting).

The best way to play OoT. 100% recommended.

Don't play the game without this.T922022-11-06Version 2.2

I was even able to install this game as a Wii virtual console WAD; every feature makes the game a lot better, specially not having to enter the menu every 3 seconds in the Water and Shadow Temple.

Patcher64+ makes this hack even better by letting you customize it, and even using Link's model from the 3DS version.

An Awesome Hackgamingcat022619912021-10-28Version 2.2

This is a great hack of Ocarina of Time. There is one thing you could add to it, though: Recently, there have been talks of the original game having anti-piracy measures, like Zelda's hair becoming pentagon-shaped as if she had an afro during the cutscene where she's revealed to be the true identity of Sheik (SPOILER ALERT!), Zelda passing through the bars without opening them when Ganon's Castle begins to crumble, an anti-piracy measure relating to the fishing minigame, and six others. I wish an update were implemented so that the game no longer detects the presence of the CIC6105 security chip and the game plays as it should.

This is God's work.ClaudeDixon2021-06-14Version 2.2

I've always liked the old atmosphere over the 3DS one plus the uncensored content, but gameplay wise the original had glaring issues so sadly there was no perfect version of the game, until now.

No explanation needed, the new Ocarina/boots control scheme is a GAME CHANGER and now not only makes the Water Temple enjoyable, but superior to the 3DS one thanks to the darker, natural, more suiting atmosphere and no hand holding highlights to guide the player to the solutions of the central puzzle.

Perhaps even more essential is the increased text speed. I'm split on the 3DS text speed since it lessens the tension/seriousness of dialogue so I settled for 2x speed which seems just right, but you can patch it to match the 3DS speed if you want. And lastly, the Stone of Agony now works like on 3DS, leaving no remaining objective gameplay issues for N64 besides first person aiming, but this isn't a game where pinpoint accuracy is necessary.

Even more impressive is how this patch goes above and beyond simply rivaling the remake. The bunny hood is amazing, and while it takes a big chunk of the child Link section to obtain, for the rest of the game it fixes the issue of the need to walk backwards across Hyrule field to gain speed and compensate for no horse, so exploration for child Link is FAR less painful. A con I found though is it breaks the octopus mini-boss, so I hope future updates can restrict its use there. Also, it breaks the "puzzles" that involve running around and lighting torches as fast as possible, but idk if there's a solution to that (maybe have sticks disable masks?)

The block pushing speed was still slow on 3DS but here it's doubled. Another plus for an already amazing patch. On a side note, on 3DS you can't re-catch bugs after releasing them, but on N64 you could and therefore only need 1 bottle for bugs. Thank god for this patch for letting me enjoy that feature without putting up with the many limitations of the original game.

Lastly, I'm usually against nerfs in difficulty, but fishing was easily the game's most boring task yet had 2 valuable rewards that required you to go through it twice. I'm glad that you're now guaranteed to catch a fish after it bites, I don't need to spend 10 minutes trying to catch a big fish only for a random number generator to screw me over.

I can't stress enough how much this hack is essential for preserving the original experience and making it truly timeless.

The Patcher64 Tool is the Best Part!thunder1352021-03-12Version 2.2

I love being able to select all the options I want using the Patcher64 Tool. It is absolutely worth taking a few minutes to set up. I'm currently doing a run on Master Quest without censored graphics/music, and I'm playing as Malon, complete with female voice and modified dialogue! There is a ton you can try out, I highly recommend it!

Note - the patches with v2.2 do not seem to speed up the text, which is one of the main selling features in my opinion. Hopefully the author can fix this soon, but you should try out the Patcher64 tool anyway.

A really good update hack.TarotCard02021-02-15Version 2.2

This hack does exactly what it sets out to do.

Of course, the most prominent (and helpful) change made was the addition of the D-Pad Menu, which allows easy access to the Ocarina and Boots without the need for pausing or the Ocarina taking up a C button.

That alone would have been enough to recommend the hack, but it went the extra mile with things like: the Stone of Agony fix, Updating Dialogue (And other things, such as graves) to be in line with later versions / releases, Un-randomizing the Bombchu Bowling prizes, and so on.

Though, there were some missteps; for all the updating to later versions, it missed one where a treasure chest floats in the central room of the Spirit Temple.

The change to Link's Models was pretty good over all, but in certain cutscenes, Young Link's eyes looked a little. . . derpy.

It also made some changes I don't exactly agree with.

  • Gold Skulltulla Tokens no longer freeze the player upon collection. The freeze gave a since of finality to each and every token, and though it's faster without it, I'm sad to see it gone.
  • The Goron and Zora Tunics now fit both Young and Adult Link, which misses the point.
  • Z-Targeting is set to Hold by default. . . gross.

That said the positives far outweigh the negatives. Every other change made was for the better. Including one the Hack Overview missed; Gold Skulltullas now tell you how many you've collected so far after each one you collect.

Over all: A really good update hack.

Very customizable OOTLuigiXHero2020-12-25Version 2.2

Neat hack if you are spoiled by randomizer stuff but want to play the original. There are other hacks that do that like betterOOT/faster quest but that hack removes cutscenes too.

Stuff i'm still meh about:

  • It still does hold targeting by default but when I wrote that I forgot it was a option so no big deal.
  • Having MM Link is a bit weird since I always saw him as older as OOT Link but guess the better model is still nice.

Also I give this a recommendation because of the optional tool that lets you make whatever set of changes you want to have for this, makes it impossible to not recommend this.

Old review for history reasons (Recommended: no): Lot of these changes do make the game better but removing the RNG from fishing and dampe kinda makes them pointless. Those were only removed in rando to make it faster to get the check, but for a hack that's supposed to just improve vanilla that just ruins them. The bombchu bowling one is fine since reward order doesn't really matter.

Also hold targeting is not good in OOT or Majora so having it be default is strange.

Amazing accomplishment!PurePixels2020-10-06Version 2.1

I'm a big fan of "redux" style quality-of-life hacks. The creators of the Ocarina of Time randomizer with its many conveniences once cruelly shot down the idea of applying the improvements to the vanilla game, so it's amazing that others stepped in. About the hack itself, not much needs to be said. Just read the list of changes and enjoy a better N64 Zelda.

EDIT as of V2.1: with the addition of a Master Quest patch and referring players to the Patcher64+ tool to make your own custom Redux version, this hack is nothing short of perfect. Excellent work and thanks so much to all contributors for giving so much love to the game!!

Makes a masterpiece pretty much perfectThirteen 13552020-09-20Version 2.1

The additions included in this hack fix everything I can think of that could have been fixed. The one thing I miss is the ability to have the D-Pad UI element show up on the left side of the screen. I way prefer this over it showing on the right, and Majora's Mask Redux (mainly made by the same person) has a seperate patch offering just that. I don't feel like using that one, since there isn't one for Ocarina.

Definitive way to play Ocarina of TimeShadowOne3332020-05-22Version 1.0

What can I say about this hack?

It has been a long-time dream of mine to be able to play Ocarina of Time with all the Quality of Life improvements done by the Randomizer team, but without any of the random items or removed scenes, just plain old vanilla OoT but with all the great perks.

Now the game feels much more enjoyable, without many of the annoyances that plagued the original versions of it. I am honoured to have been part of the testing, and to be able to add a couple text fixes to so the end product is much more polished.

Many, many thanks to Maroc's efforts for making this dream a reality!

Lens of truth for Dpad up? Ocarina Redux is a real treat.wiiluvglover642020-05-18Version 1.0

L button has the same function as Dpad up, they both toggle the map on or off. Since only one button is needed for the map toggle, maybe the lens of truth would be the perfect item for Dpad up?

This is a great hack so far. I feel like 2x text speed is fast enough for me, but 3x is great too.

In the future, I hope to see the R button arrow toggle from Majora's mask Redux added into Ocarina of time Redux.

Great job to all of you. Thank you.

Nicepleasejust2020-05-18Version 1.0

Nice, this is the definitive way to play OoT. However, one missing feature should be an option for shield blocking and free look to have their vertical controls reversed like on 3DS. I always hated that and never understood it. This isn't a flight simulator.

Ultimately, I'd like to see many of these changes hacked to the 3DS version of the game (as well as eliminating the need for touch controls as much as possible) as that one is much more graphically tolerable.

Thanks.

The Gold Standard For Playing OoTMattKimura2020-05-16Version 1.0

Finally for the first time in history, we have an improved way to play Ocarina of Time! Without having to remove cutscenes or dialogue just to achieve these quality of life features. This is a true redux hack that keeps the original experience in tact. Bringing together all the nice features from the randomizer into the base game, we now have a definitive way to play OoT like never before.

The DPAD patch alone is fantastic, allowing for quick use of not only the ocarina but also the boots. Which makes the water temple issue a thing of the past. It's SO satisfying being able to press a button to equip the iron boots instantly. Also having the ocarina on the DPAD means more space on the C buttons for other items.

Gotta love the non interruptive gold skulltulla tokens. For anyone going for 100 tokens, you no longer have to mash buttons each time you collect one. It's a huge difference since you can keep on playing without being stopped.

My FAVORITE feature is the 3x faster text speed!! It makes the ENTIRE game tolerable to play through. The game had such SLOW text speed for everything, and you couldn't always press B to skip text like with some NPC's. This is the biggest addition to the original game and I highly recommend it for newcomers. Never settle for slower text speed! Now the 3DS version isn't the only one with fast text speed.

The stone of agony icon is really awesome. Having this item tied behind a piece of hardware was a bad idea, all they had to do was what this hack does. Make an icon appear on-screen when near hidden grottoes. I actually had the Rumble Pak back in the day but it took SO many batteries! Nobody has that anymore so it's ridiculous to not be able to make use of the Stone of Agony. Again, the 3DS version is no longer ahead of the game now that this hack exists.

The faster block pushing speed is a welcome change, it doesn't feel artificially fast but just right. It picks up the pace in parts that seemed like a drag originally.

The bunny hood speed improvement is actually amazing. It essentially grants you the same speed as back pedaling which means you don't have to continuously roll across Hyrule Field or walk backwards. My only complaint here is it takes a long time to get the bunny hood and a TON of backtracking. But once you have it, it makes most of the child link segments much more faster.

The file select screen item progress is a nice touch. It's a bit of a spoiler for newcomers but these days everyone has played OoT before or saw it on youtube. It gives a nice sense of progression on your file as you play through the game. And it doesn't clutter the file menu, so definitely a welcome addition.

Simplifying some of the mini games is a great touch too like bombchu bowling not having randomized prizes, and Dampe's digging tour not being random. Making the game a little less frustrating.

Overall this hack is amazing, everyone should use this hack in place of the original. There's no reason to ever play vanilla OoT ever again! I'm so glad I was able to help with this hack and make it a reality. This is just what OoT needed. 100% playthrough here I come!
