| A Simple Fix with Simple Implementation | Josephine Lithius | 2023-10-18 | Version 0.1 |
Here's a short review for a small project: it works almost perfectly but could use some touch-ups. First and foremost, it works perfectly and doesn't interfere with anything – at least not as far as I can tell. B becomes Y, and A becomes B, just like the hack promises! This seriously makes the game more comfortable to play since the face buttons are laid out like a diamond, and the Y and B buttons are angled parallel to the human thumb. However, as was noted in the review by user "ifightdragons", the patch does not update the button graphics to match the new configuration. This means that when looking at the Copy Ability screen, it will still tell the player that B is the "action" button and A is the "jump" button. Unlike previous Kirby titles, the graphics are (mostly?) uncompressed, so this was probably an oversight. It's not really a huge deal, either – the controls are intuitive enough to figure out what does what. No biggie! There's one other thing I noticed, however, but it's very... "specific". When playing the game on a Nintendo 3DS via custom firmware and NDS-Bootstrap, it will occasionally crash when picking up the Laser Copy Ability. It doesn't always do it, either – only occasionally. Closing and re-opening the game seems to fix it for a while, and it's only the Laser Copy Ability. Why? I don't know. It didn't seem to happen on either of the emulators I used, either, so it might be specific to NDS-Bootstrap – which uses the 3DS' own Nintendo DS mode, but adds its own little menu as a background process. Again, very minor since it can be fixed pretty easily with a complete restart, as I said. Figured it was worth mentioning, though. So, all of that stated, I think it's safe to say that I highly recommend this patch to people looking for the more comfortable Kirby control scheme introduced in the original Super Star. This patch might not have the little graphical changes of the Super Star Ultra patch that's available, here, but by golly, it works (almost) perfectly!
| This shows promise, but needs a little attention | ifightdragons | 2020-06-24 | Version 0.1 |
POSITIVES: Just like the other Kirby DS hack by the same author, the button remapping is very welcome! The SNES layout feels much more natural. NEGATIVES: Unlike Super Star Ultra, the author has not yet updated the in-game graphics and text to reflect these changes. This is necessary to avoid the feeling of an unfinished hack. GOING FORWARD: Implement the same changes as in the other hack, and this is golden!
