| Just as terrible. | MRDFG Blacha | 2024-06-21 | Version 1.3 |
This is one of the worst, if not THE worst, DX colorizations ever made. As soon as you start the game, you'll be greeted by a bothersome detail: the title screen does not fade but rather cut in. The reason is simple: the transition effects have been ruined in this hack, which is something many people below me already complained about. Then there's the first stage: it quickly becomes clear this colorization job was incomplete because the sky in Green Greens is white. White. Clouds and background elements are somewhat colorized, but that's about it. Other stuff that was not colored appears in later stages, like Whispy Woods being brown and white instead of brown like any tree should be. Or the wall in the Lololo & Lalala boss fight, it should be pink but it's all white with pink and blue details. What was colorized instead got some very bad color choices. Kirby himself is a pink so hot you'll end up getting your eyes hurt from how bright it is, while the logo on the title screen... it's supposed to be yellow, right? Nope, it has to be pink, light blue and green, all excessively bright of course. Don't forget graphical corruption, either - King Dedede is now a jumbled up mess of tiles instead of the familiar character we all know. I also tried this hack with the two available addendum patches (DX Revised and Fluffy Repair Service), and while they do fix all the glitches and corruption I mentioned above, they still retain the bad and incomplete palette choices from the original hack. (Also, the SGB border in Fluffy Repair Service is kind of useless, let me tell you.) With all that said, do I recommend this hack? No. Not even by mistake. Keep on playing the original monochrome version until someone decides to give this game the colorization it deserves... if that's ever going to happen.
| Even more beautiful | Vortiene | 2024-06-21 | Version 1.3 |
This is one of the best, if not THE best, DX colorizations ever made. As soon as you start the game, you'll be greeted by a amusing detail: the title screen does not fade but rather cut in. The reason is simple: you aren't using Fluffy Repair Service DX which fixes fades! Then there's the first stage: it quickly becomes clear this colorization job was complete because the sky in Green Greens is white. White. Like the whimsical innocent world of Kirby, white is heavily used in this colorization. Like a child not filling in the color fully in a coloring book, the backgrounds of this DX hack use lots of white to a pleasant degree. It really plays well with Kirby's aesthetics and I really appreciate this style. So don't change it! The game was designed around these aesthetics, and makes use of the 4 color limitation of Gameboy to add a lot of detail with the 2 non-black non-white shades, so changing whites to non-whites would lose a lot of detail! With all that said, do I recommend this hack? Yes! Because it's beautiful! I will keep on playing this colorized version forever because the creator really understood the aesthetics of Kirby games! Have a look at Kirby's Dreamland 3! You'll notice its aesthetics incorporate a lot of white and near-white colors too! Because this aesthetic makes the game look like adventuring through the wholesome imagination of a kid! Which makes sense for a place called DREAM LAND full of cute characters!

| The hack that opened "this game" | diablo666 | 2021-12-03 | Version 1.3 |
What in GB games can't attract and even push away from them? That's right, the bias of black and white games. And a good Hack came to the point, which almost perfectly transferred the "color palette" of an 8-bit game (that is, a brighter brother). I missed this game at the time, but this hacker creation filled the gap. The palette is almost perfect, the colors are well chosen and it's nice to play. Definitely YES, I Recommend it.
| A professional hack with some small issues. | The Beaky Buccaneer | 2021-03-04 | Version 1.3 |
Kirby's Dream Land DX is a very good colourisation hack for the original Kirby's Dream Land, with official-looking colour palettes that appear to take cues from Kirby's Adventure for the NES - the sequel to Kirby's Dream Land, which was also the first full-colour game in the series. This hack leaves the original game intact, barring the colourisation, and that was definitely the right choice to make here - there wasn't any need for changes to the graphics and gameplay, and so they haven't been altered. Kirby's Dream Land DX is not without issues, though the problems that it has are VERY small relative to its level of polish. Most noticeable for me is the way that the music played during the pre-stage animations will speed up like crazy for the last few notes, which I presume is a side-effect of running a game written for the monochrome hardware in the faster colour-mode of the Game Boy Colour - much like how official colourised releases, like the Japan-only colour version of Donkey Kong Land 3, also have timing errors for the same reason. The music also speeds up like this whenever you go through a door or there is any other sort of screen transition. Graphics-wise, this hack loses the original game's fade-transition and flicker effects, though I didn't feel that this, or the music issue, detracted from the experience; Those who didn't grow up with the original version of the game probably wouldn't notice it at all! The only major giveaway that this isn't an official release comes in the form of a large graphical glitch appearing where King Dedede is supposed to be during the character-roll that is shown after the credits in the Extra Game mode. That said, the palettes have been well-chosen, and aside from the minor problems mentioned above, everything about this hack feels true to official releases in the series. It would have been nice to see some blue on the face of King Dedede, since he's a Little Blue Penguin (a real-world penguin species found in New Zealand, so named for their bright blue feathers; There's also a darker-coloured cousin species in Australia that's known as the Fairy Penguin), but I can see that technical limitations must have gotten in the way of doing this - still, he looks pretty much as he does in Kirby's Adventure for the NES, and that look works perfectly well on the Game Boy Colour. Before now, the only other option for a (loose) colour equivalent to Kirby's Dream Land was the Spring Breeze sub-game from Kirby Super Star on the SNES, and in Kirby Super Star Ultra on the Nintendo DS, which is often mistaken for a remake but which actually cuts out a huge amount of content from an already brief game - hopefully this hack will let those who aren't familiar with the original release (as well as the monochrome-averse) enjoy this excellent short-but-sweet game in its much more charming true form. I still prefer the monochrome original, and perhaps others who already know Kirby's Dream Land very well might also swing that way, but I still highly recommend this hack as an excellent way to play this classic in a whole new light. Highly recommended to existing fans and newcomers alike - this really should have been an official release back in the day! I tested this game in the versions of RetroPie for both the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the Raspberry Pi Zero W, and it worked as described above with both. I also played it on real Game Boy Colour hardware, where it also works as described in my review.
| Great hack, but a few minor nitpicks! | Bubbabyte | 2020-07-28 | Version 1.3 |
This is a great hack of Kirby's Dream Land, but I noticed that the fire that Kirby spits out while utilising the Super Spicy Curry is white instead of red and orange. My other issue is that the sky is white instead of blue, but that honestly isn't nearly as big of a deal. DEFINITELY fix the fire, MAYBE fix the sky. Other than those two minor issues, this hack is now the definitive way to play this game now in my opinion. Good work!
| The only reason to revisit the original Kirby's Dreamland | Supergamerguy | 2020-07-26 | Version 1.3 |
Without this hack, I would have never considered to try out the original game. Since it was remade in Kirby Super Star, I didnt think trying the lesser Gameboy version was worth it. But once a full color hack came along, I knew I had give this a shot. Surprisingly, I had a ton of fun with this: all the color choices fit the Kirby franchise motif and helped to distinguish between sprites and backgrounds at some points in the game. Minor issues like gradients and transitions didnt pop up on my radar at all until they were mentioned in other reviews; they dont impact the playing experience at all! I highly recommend this to anyone looking to play the Gameboy Kirbys Dreamland or any fan of Kirby at all!
| Almooost there, but not quite yet! | ifightdragons | 2020-06-23 | Version 1.3 |
THE POSITIVES: Great colorization. Spot on choice for colors. The game looks incredibly vibrant. THE NEGATIVES: Some subtle details have been lost in the process, as already mentioned. Transitions aren't gradient as before. Color cycling and flicker effects are lost. GOING FORWARD: If these negatives can be solved, this is by far the most ultimate way to play this game.
| Wonderful introduction, great on GBA | EvilJagaGenius | 2020-06-23 | Version 1.2 |
I hadn't actually played a Kirby game before I saw this, and suddenly had an excuse to try the first game in the series. It's always nice to see these GB colorization hacks, and this works quite well. I played on my GBA using Goomba Color, it appears to work fine and the "BGB + OG Hardware" patch gave me good colors. I haven't played the original non-color game before, so I'm not sure how relevant the missing GFX mentioned by other reviewers is, but I had a wonderful time and it shouldn't stop you from trying out the patch.
| A dream come true! | ShadowOne333 | 2020-06-23 | Version 1.3 |
Gotta say, I have always said that Kirby's Dream Land was the perfect game for a DX version. It's short, it's easy, it has an already fully coloured remake in the form of Spring Breeze in Kirby Super Star Ultra for the DS to take references for colors from, and the style of Kirby games would really make a colorizarion of the first Dream Land just incredible. Only issue is that some flicker effects when objects/enemies are hit or when Kirby gains a powerup are missing, and when the Kracko (cloud with eye) boss appears, the eye has some sort of orange & yellow colour split down the middle abruptly, but outside of that, the rest of the game plays perfectly! I even took it upon myself to make a revised version of this hack, in which: 1) I modify the title screen Kirby on the top left to look better and with some shading 2) Modified the palette for the pink on the title screen (and HUD) to match Kirby's in-game pink color 3) Modified the HUD icons to look more colorful and not mostly white If the dev(s) wants me to add this patch as optional or as an update, please let me know! I'll be glad to add. :)
| Kirby's Dream Come True! | stry8993 | 2020-06-21 | Version 1.2 |
Let me first start off with my initial reaction to see Romhacking.net's tweet. ":O... my favourite game of all time.... this is a gift, just wow!" And it certainly is! I couldn't believe my eyes, had to patch my rom for this right away and try it out. Incredible! This is what my heart had always dreamt about. I still remember my Mom coming home from Grocery shopping with this game, handing it to me, this big white pink-hued puff ball and all these fantastic enemies in front of a tree, on the box art. I had no clue at the time, but this game would be formative for me. It would forever stir my love and kindle my appreciation for the loveable, bright, beautiful, fantastical, and approachable world's that HAL Labratory would put out with Kirby's name. I always saw this game, be it in Greenish Yellow and Black Lines, or White on Grey, or that strange sort of grey-ish white of the Gameboy Color, as bright and vibrant as what I saw on the box art. To see so much love, and thought go into the color palette choices for this, it almost brings me to tears. But I can say without a doubt that it moves my heart, and the smile still hasn't left. Like I said in my tweet, this is a gift, above and beyond, and brings an incomprehensible level of joy. So thank you so much for your hardwork and passion. Job well done! 100% recommended.

Amazing colorization of the GameBoy classic. The color choices are great and the game looks better than ever now.
| A Good First Draft | Great Hierophant | 2020-06-21 | Version 1.2 |
The good : The color choices in this "DX" hack are overall excellent. Backgrounds do not look garish unlike the palette Nintendo's built-in firmware gave this game for the GBC. Sprites are faithfully colored to their color versions from later games when known within the GBC's capabilities. The bad : Color cycling effects from the monochrome game are lost in this colorization. This means that screen transitions happen abruptly, color flickering on certain objects is now solid and Kirby no longer flickers when he gains the invincibility or fire breath powerups. The failure to incorporate these elements gives the hack a less polished look and feel than it should have and would have had if Nintendo released a DX version of this game. Conclusion : Recommended with the above reservation, and should that be addressed, this hack would be fully recommended.
