Hack description

Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana -- Better Starting Stat

v1.7, by hmsong

The beginning of the game (Full Metal Hugger ~ Machine Golem) for SD3 was unusually difficult, not only because of lack of skills, but also because your starting stats were very low. However, raising the character stat cap ended up raising the enemy stats, which made the game even more difficult.

So, this patch does the following things:

- Everyone starts with 1 more point in all stats.
- The first stat cap is raised from Lv4 to Lv6 -- this forces you to balance out the stats in the beginning, but you already start with higher stats, so it shouldn't negatively affect post-Machine Golem gameplay.
- Some of Lv1~4 and Lv7 enemies have higher stat.
- Goblin's Hand Axe, Poron's Dart, and Machine Golem's Rocket Launcher do less (and therefore more reasonable) damage.

With this, most enemy stats would remain the same as the original (for the most part), but you'd have higher beginning stats without compromising the later levels, meaning only the beginning parts of the game would be easier. And you'd have 6 more total points before the first class change (although for less frequently used stats, since the later level stat caps are still the same).

Applying Notes:

- To combine Better Monsters patch, apply Better Monsters patches first, then apply this patch.
- This is specifically for No Header ROM. If you only have a Headered ROM, then you can use TUSH (https://retrohackers.net/utility-details.php?id=608/) to remove the header.
- Compatible with the English NCorlett-translation patch. But again, you need a Unheadered ROM. If you are using the translation patch from Romhacking.net, then you need to apply the translation to a Headered ROM first, then use TUSH to remove the header. And then you can apply these patches.
- Compatible with the new Trials of Mana ROM, released in 2019. But again, you need a Unheadered ROM.

There are other hacks for Seiken Densetsu 3 that you should check out:

Sin of Mana
- http://ngplus.net/index.php?/files/file/28-seiken-densetsu-3-sin-of-mana/
- This changes the contents of the game in many ways, such as equipment bonus, level-up change, class balance, difficulty, boss behaviors, running in battles, MP regeneration, dungeon format, and tons of bug fixes. It's a completely new game though, since so much has changed, and the game progress is slightly different.
- There is also a forum (google "Sin of Mana forum"), where you can ask the creator (praetarius5018) numerous questions. He is very helpful, and even helps you to create your own hack. He certainly did for me.
- Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with the new Trials of Mana.
- Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with hmsong's patches.

Please leave comments or reviews. This would give the creator ideas on what is good or not, and depending on the situation, even revise the patches.

Honestly, I think the increased starting stat is great. The beginning section is indeed a bit hard (relatively), due to limited skills and money. So the idea of increasing the stats is great indeed.

I actually had a problem with the older version of this hack, because of its inability to level up certain stats at certain levels. But that's been fixed.

I also like how Goblin, Poron, and Machine Golem (boss)'s skills have been weakened. Those were some BS. And with this patch, they are more reasonable (barely).

Very much recommended. No more complaints.
