Hack description

Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana -- Less Grinding

v1.8, by hmsong

Seiken Densetsu 3 required a LOT of grinding for level up (esp the mid parts of the game). In fact, most of the time, it was required for you to just run through the dungeon without fighting and get to the next parts of the plot, just so you can grind a bit faster. And even then, the process of grinding for EXP was long and painful, because the EXP requirement was so much, relative to how much EXP you got from monsters.

This patch makes it so that the required EXP for level up is more reasonable. Specifically, up to Lv54, the required EXP for each level up is less than the original game (as much as ~1500 EXP). However, from Lv55 and on, the required EXP for each level up is more than the original game (as much as ~1500 EXP). By that time though, that's just 1~2 more enemies. Eventually, by Lv99 (if you ever get there), the total EXP requirement would be the same as the original.

Also, many monsters will drop more EXP. Again, this is to reduce the grinding.

However, because you grind less for the same level, that means you will ultimately end up with less money at the same level. So, in order to offset the difference, many enemies will now drop more money. Hopefully, this will be enough to make the necessary difference.

Applying Notes:

- This is specifically for No Header ROM. If you only have a Headered ROM, then you can use TUSH (https://retrohackers.net/utility-details.php?id=608/) to remove the header.
- Compatible with the English NCorlett-translation patch. But again, you need a No Header ROM. If you are using the translation patch from Romhacking.net, then you need to apply the translation to a Headered ROM first, then use TUSH to remove the header. And then you can apply these patches.
- Compatible with the new Trials of Mana ROM, released in 2019. But again, you need a No Header ROM.

There are other hacks for Seiken Densetsu 3 that you should check out:

Sin of Mana
- http://ngplus.net/index.php?/files/file/28-seiken-densetsu-3-sin-of-mana/
- This changes the contents of the game in many ways, such as equipment bonus, level-up change, class balance, difficulty, boss behaviors, running in battles, MP regeneration, dungeon format, and tons of bug fixes. It's a completely new game though, since so much has changed, and the game progress is slightly different.
- There is also a forum (google "Sin of Mana forum"), where you can ask the creator (praetarius5018) numerous questions. He is very helpful, and even helps you to create your own hack. He certainly did for me.
- Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with the new Trials of Mana.
- Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with hmsong's patches.

Please leave comments or reviews. This would give the creator ideas on what is good or not, and depending on the situation, even revise the patches. You can also send me an email (address in the attached document).

I can't imagine playing ToM/SD3 without it.tsubasaplayer162022-05-06Version 1.6

Headline.

Vanilla gameplay jank aside, if you're going through the game and one of your only complaints is that grinding is a must if you want to stand a chance (especially since the game is encouraging you to be in equal level of your enemies as much as you can since there's times when in one level you might be dealing small damage like 1-20 HP, but as soon as you level up you actually can deal damage), then do yourself a favor and play the game with this hack. It cuts down the grinding significantly and makes it more enjoyable. Too much grinding can make a game really boring and a chore to play and this remedies it. (I only have 1.4 on hand as of now, but 1.6 (at the time of this review) will be just as valid.) Right now, I haven't played the remake fully yet, but when I do I'll make further comparisons between the two on what approach you might want to play ToM.

(Played on original hardware with an FXPAK Pro. Similar results will occur with the Super Everdrive.)

What can I say. This hack is absolutely necessary to actually enjoy the game. Too much grinding made the game very boring, and this hack moderates that to a reasonable level.

There really isn't any reason why anyone would not use this hack.

This was a great way to experience this game!FullExtentOfTheJam2021-07-07Version 1.4

Played this game for the first time and I used this hack. This was great. I followed a walkthrough while playing and the walkthrough kept saying to grind to a certain level before proceeding. I never had to! This is almost a perfect balance for the gameplay. I am at the last boss now and I can say that I have enjoyed this game with this hack. I have had just enough of the combat engine without it overstaying it's welcome. I feel I have experienced all this game has to offer without spending countless hours of just grinding. Thanks for this!!!
