Imbalanced, but easieraitchfactor2020-08-27Version 1.0

This hack has a few flaws, but still manages to probably be the best hack of Gimmick! to date. On a technical level, the only issue I seemed to find was a glitched-up cannon sprite in Level 2 if you skip over the interior section, although that could just be a mismatched ROM.

This hack does a pretty good job of making things feel more fair without stripping it of all challenge; the slopes and falling blocks section in Level 3 and the recurring change of isolated 1-tile blocks to 2-tile blocks are great examples of making the slippery engine less frustrating. Some of the boss arena changes were also really nice. The platform in Level 5's boss makes it easier to deal with the homing missiles in the second part and also to land hits on the boss, but only if you survive long enough for it to step all the way to the centre. The raised floor in Level 6's final boss makes it easier to hit the boss and reduces a lot of the frustration from waiting around for it to come down into range, while still forcing the player to dodge and aim their stars.

However, some parts become a little bit too easy, most notably the hidden items of Level 1 and 4, Level 4's boss and Level 5's first boss, and sadly the green miniboss and the Player 2-controlled enemy in Level 2 is omitted entirely. In my opinion, Level 1, 4 and 6's hidden areas should still require star jumps to access them, although I do appreciate the removal of Level 4's single attempt design. Meanwhile, the statue minibosses in Level 6 are still quite (arguably excessively) difficult, the pink plesiosaur in Level 4 still cheapshots you with fireballs if you aren't prepared (although the cheap arrow later on is removed), and some horizontal screen transitions will still kill an unwary player, like in the hidden areas of Levels 5 and 6.

The items in boss arenas feel a little out of place although understandably it's the easiest way to reduce the difficulty in some of the worse battles. Another minor nitpick is that the second solution to the hidden item in Level 6 is made more difficult (though not impossible); you can push the spring all the way to the right and use a bomb to dislodge the cannon machine, where you can then ride the cannonballs to the other side.

Overall though, despite the unevenness I still enjoyed this easier, arguably fairer edition of Gimmick!.
