Castlevania II - Simon's Quest (U) [!].nesHack description
Included are two small patches that change the appearance of tiles associated with false floors/walls and breakable blocks in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. In the base game these look just like every other block, which compels players to throw holy water on every surface to progress and avoid significant backtracking. For mansions where they are most prevalent, one can assume the intent was to make them dangerous places full of traps and secret passages, but its implementation feels unfair and designed to frustrate.Screenshots

I really like the patch version with the subtle changes, as when I play it feels like I'm being rewarded for observing my surroundings. The difference between the edited tile and the new tile really is subtle, and it's definitely easy to miss secrets. I've had to backtrack a few times. In my mind this is a good thing - with a game like this, it's important to be able to use contextual clues to your benefit without making anything too obvious. (Of course, an easier option is there for people who would rather coast along without the added engagement of exploring.) Overall a great hack and one that definitely improves upon the experience!
| A very great hack | brownjacket | 2021-03-21 | Version 1.1 |
I really like this hack. I know a lot of old-school gamers prefer the cryptic nature of many NES games, but as someone who has picked up Simon's quest for the first time, the cryptic stuff is kind of off-putting. This hack in tandem with Bisqwit's hack makes the game much more accessible and worth playing.
| Very good! | Masked Dedede | 2020-09-08 | Version 1.1 |
With this hack I don't have to worry about missing any secrets, though I still have to watch out for any false floors. A way in which this could be improved is in having individual patches for the breakable blocks and false floors, so that the player could just have the changes to the false floors/breakable blocks, or have do combinations like subtle breakable blocks with conspicuous false floors. Overall, this is a great hack that anyone playing Simon's Quest should download!
