This patch is for a *headered* ROM (4,194,816 bytes), but the ROM info on the hack page (CRC32: 974523FF) is for the *unheadered* ROM (4,194,304 bytes). If you have the unheadered ROM (and these days, you probably do), use GhostlyDark's patch instead: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4186/. If you do have the headered ROM, this patch will do the job. The last review (by r1ggles) said to use both patches. Don't do that! This patch makes the same changes as GhostlyDark's, just for a headered ROM. This patch also changes the internal title from "TERRANIGMA P" to "TERRANIGMA USA". That's it!
| Important info for this to work for all setups | r1ggles | 2022-09-20 | Version 1.0 |
For people who are using CRTSwitchres/Gsync/Freesync (RA PC or a Pi4 where they can set the refresh for your monitor automatically) using only this patch will result in 50fps still (and stuttery 50fps within 60 if there is no refresh CRTSwitchres etc enabled). You need to use this patch first and then the Terranigma ips patch here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4186/. That changes the internal ROM to bypass the region check error screen and reports itself as NTSC region as well, for the emulator to pick 60Hz. This isn't an issue with emulators that don't have refresh switching. Using both patches gives you a perfect NTSC region game with a perfectly smooth 60fps 60Hz scroll without any stuttering whatsoever. Excellent patch and I highly recommend it, just keep this in mind depending on what you use to play this game.
| Use this if you HAVE to force 60hz (explanation in review) | tsubasaplayer16 | 2022-05-18 | Version 1.0 |
First off, I highly, highly, recommend using this patch because the game's original speed in the Super Famicom release is 60hz (PAL makes the game play SLOWER), however I only recommend using this patch if you HAVE to in certain situations, here's why: If you're playing Terranigma on original NTSC hardware via flash cart (i.e. Super Everdrive / FXPAK Pro / SD2SNES), then the flash cart will handle the region conversion for you (provided that you enable the setting that does it. For example, go to Configuration—In-game Settings—Auto region patch, for FXPAK Pro / SD2SNES). I played through the game unknowingly when my game rom is in PAL with this setting enabled and I played through it fully with my North American SNES with no problems (I didn't notice it until later). However, if you're using emulators, you more or less have to use this patch to make the emulator run the game at 60hz. That's what happened to me when I attempted to play my rom on a modded 2DS (via Snes9x) and noticed it was running in 50 FPS. I tried setting the emulator on 60hz and it will show the region lockout screen as usual. Just a side note: if you're also using the 8x16 font patch like I was, I recommend using the NTSC patch AFTER applying the 8x16 font, otherwise you will face what I had to deal with. Otherwise, patch it to your heart's content as a safety measure.
| Great improvement that works with French version as well! | Brand.Newman | 2021-08-22 | Version 1.0 |
After reading some of the previous reviews, I applied the patch to both European and French versions of the game, then went into a hex editor to check what had been modified. Turns out there were only two entries :
I played both versions, and can confirm they run at 60 htz each. So, does that mean they actually run "too" fast, and mess with the cutscenes? Well, they don't! I played the Japanese and French versions of the intro side by side, and except for some occurrences when the screen would fade to black sooner because of one sentence being shorter in one language than the other, they basically respect the same timing. Which we owe to Terranigma not being PAL optimized, apparently! In conclusion, this patch is a "must have" for everyone: it makes you rediscover a game you love with the correct speed, and if you haven't tried Terranigma yet, then you're twice lucky! Highly recommended.
| Disregard the below review- essential patch! | awsuman10 | 2021-08-14 | Version 1.0 |
While it does seem at first the music is desynced from the cutscenes, especially in the opening scene, a quick comparison between versions makes it clear that this version and the original Japanese run near-entirely identically. In fact the PAL version is the demonstrably unoptimized version; simply check the resurrection scenes. The faster game speed is also a nice bonus. The PAL version may have its fans, and that's fine, but in my view you cannot pass up this patch. I wholly believe it's the way the game was meant to be played.
| Misses the final touch | Keiyuu | 2021-01-12 | Version 1.0 |
Sadly, I cannot fully recommend this patch yet. The thing is that Terranigma is a partly optimized PAL game, meaning that while the gameplay in the PAL version does run slightly slower than the NTSC original, the developers optimized the music to play in proper sync with the "cutscenes". With this patch the PAL version is forced to run at 60Hz which brings the gameplay to its original speed, but in turn the music gets out of sync with the scenes. This is for instance noticeable during the longer intro sequence before you start the game. While this may not be a deal breaker for everyone who just wants to play the game at 60Hz without caring about these inaccuracies, as a huge fan of the game I can't recommend this patch as the definitive Terranigma experience *yet*. To my knowledge the music desync is something that can be fixed as this has also been done for the NTSC patches for Actraiser 1 and 2.
| Excellent combined with 8x16 font | lastdual | 2018-01-16 | Version 1.0 |
This hack very noticeably improves Terranigma's frame rate. It's also compatible with the "Terranigma 8x16" font hack by MopoZ, together making for an optimal experience, though a little extra work is required. This hack requires a headered rom and the font hack requires no header. As such, after applying this hack, you need to use a tool such as SNEStuff to remove the header before applying MopoZ's hack. Then you're good to go.
| Finally a way to play it in 60hz | Maeson | 2013-06-19 | - |
It works like a charm. At first I had some problems but it was my fault. Maybe sounds obvious, but it even works with Spanish, French and German versions of the game. Well Done, I'd love to know how to convert other Pal games to NTSC so I can play them on 60hz.
