Hack description

Mega Man - The Wily Wars is a collection of remakes of the first 3 Mega Man games, originally released on the NES, now re-released, for the first time on the Sega Genesis. The Wily Wars was released in cartridge format in Japan and PAL regions. The North American Genesis version was available via the Sega Channel online service. Released in December, 1994.

Wily Tower is an optional bonus game unlocked after clearing all three Mega Man games on the same save file. The original game used Serial EEPROM which few emulators support, which means without patching, the only way to get to Wily Tower was to beat all three games in one go, or use downloaded save files and Save States to access it.

This patch makes the Wily Tower directly select-able from the game select menu.

This patch is excellent, and I recommended it for the ones who just want to jump right into Wily Tower without having to beat all three games first. I've tested this patch on the Genesis mini version of the rom and works just fine and haven't encountered any issues, just MAKE SURE you patch the Genesis mini rom of Wily Wars with the SRAM hack by Plombo https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5765/ before applying this patch.

I admit; I think most of Minakuchi Engineering's Mega Man titles aren't great. Mega Man World 1 is a fine game, Mega Man World 3 has horrendously tight level design, and The Wily Wars version of the NES trilogy, despite being pretty graphically appealing, play awful compared to the original titles with Mega Man 1 and 3 being the most playable and Mega Man 2 being totally difficult for all the wrong reasons, the gameplay far too janky and not smooth at all compared to the original on NES. But Mega Man World 4-5, Mega Man X3, and Wily Tower have to be their best MM games. Wily Tower is extremely fun, and this hack makes having Wily Wars on my PC or Mega EverDrive totally worth it!

Sometimes, plain and simple is all a person could ever want, and this hack does exactly what it says it does. As soon as I fire up a fresh save file, Wily Tower shows up in the rotation of games, and it works perfectly. To really get the most out of this hack, you should combine this with MottZilla's SRAM Save hack, which not only replaces the game's serial EEPROM save system with the more traditional SRAM system, but also formats the game to be playable on US systems at a full 60 Hz. This gives you the full experience of the original release without having to beat the first three games. The feature may be simple, but The Wily Wars has some design issues that make unlocking Wily Tower feel like a chore, and this is one of those quality-of-life changes that make such a big difference that this hack feels almost mandatory. Highly recommended; I wouldn't want to go back to the base game.

This hack is pretty much mandatory unless you plan on using save states It unlocks the bonus Wily tower which otherwise required beating all 3 other games and as a lot of emulators still have issues saving this game it often lead to needing to import save states and other tricks, this is just a heck of a lot more convenient.
