Hack description

Set after Porco and Curtis' dogfight in one of Studio Ghibli's most underrated films, Porco is now faced with outflying the Italian Air Force, the still bitter pirates, and some hired thugs and mercenaries in order to keep Gina and Fio safe while also ensuring his own continued freedom. He must also face additional opposition from the sea, as the fascist powers of Italy have sent their Navy to prevent Porco from escaping the Mediterranean. With Curtis' help, Porco must shoot down as many enemy fighters as he can to escape his newfound peril in what might be the most dangerous battle of his life. In order to do so, he must also find and eliminate some of the enemy's top brass lurking in commandeered civilian leisure planes on the outskirts of the battle, waiting to watch his defeat. Help Porco save the ones he loves and obtain the life he always wanted without his curse...

As a romhacking fan, I find that a golden rule is usually observed in good hacks: A cool idea needs a good game as a base.

An example that can be found in the works I' ve published is Ranma 1/2 on NES (using Kung-Fu as a base): In this case to a cool idea is added a timeless gameplay and a atmosphere that fit so well with the theme of the hack that it is possible to imagine it as an official product of the manga/anime.

On the opposite side we would find Miami Vice: The Videogame. The ambiance of the game used as a base (Mottomo Abunai Deka) is perfect, as it is based on a Japanese TV show that is a rip-off of the 80's cult series, but the overall quality of the game is really poor, which detracts from the real purpose of the hack which (at least for me) is for people to enjoy it.

So, what's the point? That I enthusiastically recommend this hack to any fan of shooters and/or the work of Hayao Miyazaki, as the game chosen as a base is not only excellent, but also fits perfectly with the anime it represents, where the sea and clouds predominate in many shots.

Just a note for the author (always from the affection I feel for him) and that is to take this work as a model for all his projects, cause although he follows the golden rule of choosing fun and timeless games as a base, this is the only one to date in which the setting of the original game fits in a natural way.

As the knight in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" said: Choose wisely ;)

As a Studio Ghibli fan, but not shooters...DameonRaye2020-11-04Version 2.0

This is by far one of my top favorite NES hacks of all time, hands down. I've played a bit of 1943 despite not being much of a Shooter gamer, and yet I was never invested in completing the game, just treated it as a little time killer on the go. However, it's surprising what new ideas and a new look can do to invest you in completing the story. Definitely give this a play, and if you haven't, watch the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, either first, or while you're playing this hack. In fact, I think I'll go do that myself!
