| Excellent - treat it as a "how far can you go" game | Dr_CorvusB | 2022-07-21 | Version 2.4 |
This is a very high quality SMB hack. Great graphics, level design, music, and added powerups and features make this hack a new experience to play Super Mario Bros. Frantik managed to polish many of the rough edges that the original Super Mario Unlimited had, and overall makes it one of the few SMB hacks on this site that can solidly be called "professional-grade". One thing worth mentioning: difficulty ramps up really quickly between worlds, so unless you are a *really* good SMB player, I'd otherwise recommend playing this hack in terms of "how far can you go" within the game, instead of playing it with the intention of beating it. It'll give you way less headache this way. For reference, here's my personal equivalence table between expected Super Mario Unlimited world difficulty, and their closest official SMB series difficulty equivalent:
If there's one single thing I recommend while playing this hack, it's to collect all Mario Coins - you'll thank yourself later on in the game. While I think this is one of my top 3 SMB hacks, I do think it isn't perfect. The underwater theme sounds a bit flat and muffled (all other themes are awesome though), and levels within the same world (but not across worlds) can get a bit repetitive and blend in with each other. I give this hack a 9/10.
| "Deluxe" - justifies its name! | diablo666 | 2022-01-08 | Version 2.4 |
Good afternoon. Today I tried out this version of the hack. And IT is MUCH better than its original source. Really, less frustrating levels, well thought out design and interesting solutions. 7-4 although the platform does not disappear, but the "Pit" with a pipe and a flower remained in place. It has become more interesting, more playable and really "Deluxe" justifies its name. I recommend this hack if you like Mario games or good hacks on its Subject P.S. The author, send to the mail "how to get every Ă—Mario CoinĂ— in every world, because I couldn't pass the game 100%"
| You thought The Lost Levels were hard? | BlueYoshi | 2021-03-19 | Version 2.3 |
I feel kinda bad that I can't recommend this game, as it has amazing graphics and audio, BUT the difficulty... Until World 4 it's your normal Mario hack (difficulty-wise) but after that, the difficulty is between Kaizo and SMB2J. The original game feels like Kirby's Epic Yarn next to it. I lost 300 lives+ on worlds 4 to 5, and I'm not even finished yet with the game. If RHDN had a mixed recommendation option, I'd put this.
| I registered here just to make a review, it was that good | thesoftbulletin | 2021-03-18 | Version 2.3 |
I've played my fair share of SMB1 rom hacks, most of which are frankly abysmal. I know folks rave about the excellent rom hacks for SMB3, but I honestly feel like this hack rivals some of the best SMB3 hacks out there (and considering the source material being worked with, making as high of quality hack as this for SMB1 as compared to SMB3 is like comparing someone being forced to start a fire with sticks vs. someone having matches, so I'm blown away by how great this game looks and sounds). Much of the complaints I'm seeing here remark on the difficulty curve, and I can't say those are totally wrong (one review specifically notes the bump in difficulty beginning in World 6, likely because they found the 4, 5, 6 warp zone and went straight there). After having warped to World 6 myself, I can agree the difficulty is far more challenging than World 3. That being said, THIS GAME FEELS FAIR AND PLAYS FAIRLY. I feel like that's the most important distinction to make. Some games are frustrating in that you feel ripped off. This game is challenging, but the controls are tight and hitboxes are where you think they should be, so it doesn't hurt to lose. Plus, with infinite lives and a death counter, it's a fact that you'll die, a lot. But in my experience, you try a few things and you find something that works, and you move on, getting a legitimate satisfaction that comes from well executed game design. Really a triumph by frantik with his hack. Threw it on my Everdrive and have been playing it for hours. A+
| Amazing | grizz6 | 2021-03-13 | Version 2.2 |
This game feels like a legit game rather than a project. One of the best smb1 hacks i've ever played. tons of replayability, secrets, etc. Nintendo should hire this guy.
| A Very Super Mario Hack | ThroughT1m3 | 2020-12-25 | Version 2.01 |
Firstly the original Mario Unlimited was one of my favorite Mario games. So this deluxe version was a real treat. The intro screens displaying the authors name is really nice and the one with Mario which added his voice was awesome. The great title screen now houses a really cool save feature. Color palette used in this version is much better. Now the gameplay. This game feels like a it was actual made by the Nintendo. Great levels, mechanics and physics. Stopwatch power-up is really nice. The secondary Mario coin is impressive. Many people complain about the difficulty but I feel like most Mario hacks are either bad games or just plain hard. SMBUD has one of the best difficulty spectrums of any Mario hack. Starts out nice and fun and gets harder and harder each world. Nothing kaizo though. You get infinite lives. Take ten or fifteen minutes to practice the level and beat it. If you can spend two hours staring at a social media site, you can take the fifteen minutes to study the level and accomplish it. The technical features of this hack are really cool. The Bowser fight was really neat. So cool hearing Mario's voice in SMB. Graphics are really nice. Text boxes are cool. Speed runner mode is adds a awesome feature to any who do that kind of thing. There are a million and one SMB hacks out there but only a few that are this good. The author's abilities really shine with this hack. The effort and time put in really shows and the result is one of the coolest hacks ever made.
| I really like the graphics, gameplay, and levels. (With some caveats) | isoacc | 2020-12-05 | Version 2.01 |
I finally played through the whole of this hack recently. I did enjoy the difficulty and the nice SMB3 inspired graphics. However, this game got tough (for me anyway) around level 3-5. Don't go into this hack expecting a normal Mario game. It's not going to be easy. This is IMO a SMB2 JP type challenge and above in the later levels. There's no lives to worry about so you can keep going as long as you want. I do have some nitpicks about the platforms. When I was playing the first few levels, it was a bit confusing because the island tops are solid. Unlike in regular SMB and beyond where you can jump through them. Also, the rock platforms that are overlapped together and seem like you can pass through the back one like in SMW, but you can't it's a solid wall. I got used to it after a bit, but just a little nitpick that annoyed me. Overall, if you like harder Mario hacks you'll most likely enjoy this one. So I give it a recommend even though it won't be for everyone.
| LOOOOVE this game! | scarlet | 2020-12-01 | Version 2.01 |
Easily the best SMB1 hack ever done by far. Source: I've played a *lot* of them. Lots of stuff in here that I didn't know was possible to do to an SMB1 cart. There's a level of craft here that is very evident, especially in the very gradual ramping up of the difficulty where it's still a fun challenge vs. something infuriatingly unfair. There's actually an in game play reason to grab the special coins, the levels are varied and super-aesthetically pleasing, and the overall experience is superlative. Really glad I checked this out.
| Ridiculous difficulty curve | Xenon_Xyanide | 2020-11-30 | Version 2.01 |
Frustrating. Technically, a lot of hard work has gone into this hack but game-play wise it's infuriating to play.
| It's playable | gravitygoesup1 | 2020-11-28 | Version 2.01 |
As the first reviewer said, the game is pretty good. The graphics changes look really nice and I enjoyed finding the secrets. However if you take the warp pipe to World 6 you die 100 times. I made it through World 6 all the way to 7-2, but there was a jump in that level that I'm not willing to try again. The only way I made it through was with save states. The first two worlds were hard, but it did take long for me to figure out how to get through it. I need to go through Worlds 3-5, but the difficulty progression in this game seems to go from easy to impossible, so be warned if you want to try this. It's advertised as a normal hack but it is in no way appropriate for casual gamers. Pros will enjoy this game.
| A very promising hack but difficulty curve issues | Ligeia | 2020-11-26 | Version 2.01 |
The hacking itself is brilliant. New graphics, new music, this could be the best SMB hack ever, really. But the difficulty curve is not right. It starts off quite alright but after warping to world 6-1 the difficulty was too drastically amped up and I found myself stuck by an unbeatable jump. Right before the end of the level you got two Paratroopas and you have to jump on each of them to cross the gap to the next platform. Except that while you're bouncing on the first one, the second one goes left and by the time you land on it, you're too far away from the next platform to be able to land on it. I tried it 100 times in different ways and couldn't do it. So unfortunately I can't recommend this hack as is. If this issue and the difficulty curve are fixed I'll be glad to try it again and revise my judgment.
