Leave the original behind in this caseestoybien2022-12-20Version 1.1

Played this game for many years, I remember renting X-men when the animated series was very in, and it has potential actually. The graphics are nice, with that giant Magneto and that badass song at the intro, detailed levels, the possibility of playing with four characters switching in-game and the fact is a straight platform and action game works enough for beign a very attractive game.

On the other hand the level design is a mess, the caracter switching and powers feel very limited and keeps you from using them most of the time or wasting them only to find you can't use them when needed. All of these makes the game less fun that it could be obtuse and hard for the wrong reasons.

BillyTime hack tones down some of the issues the game has (plus adding an optional save feature). Now you can switch between characters anytime you want, so you can do better use of their health and powers, and they lose less energy and power, or nothing at all in some cases, and it regenerates faster too.

Also the part when you need to reset the console is no longer needed, that comes handy because when you passed this the first time it just gets odd.

It's a much more enjoyable experience now. Wolverine is overpowered thanks to the regeneration and the infinite claws, but we still have three difficulty levels to choose from, and who cares.... the challenge along with the level design are the worst aspects of the game. I'm more of a purist myself but when an experience isn't memorable a change for the better is welcome, play Ultimate X-men instead.

A vast improvementG30FF2021-01-19Version 1.0

I've always liked the Genesis X-Men, but I've never been that good at it. There are always just a few things that keep it from being great. Now, with this hack, I've finished the game for the first time.

This hack goes a long way to making a decent game vastly better. My favourite features are reducing the energy cost for mutant powers, increasing the regen rate for mutant powers, and removing the character switching limits (Seriously, why were they there in the first place?). Being able to switch characters at any time you want opens the game up substantially, and it gives each character a sense of purpose. Switch to Wolverine when you want to do some up close fighting. Nightcrawler to get past barriers. Cyclops for range. And Gambit for... everything else? And increasing the regen speed of mutant powers and reducing the cost makes them much more interesting to use, and makes it more likely that you'd want to use them, rather than save them for special occasions. They regenerate fast enough now that unless you wildly spam them, you shouldn't run out often. The one downside is that the mutant power pickups are more or less pointless now, but they were so infrequent in the game anyway.

My one critique, and it is very nitpicky, is that the transition from Mojo's Crunch to the reset cutscene is very jarring. If it could have waited a couple of seconds, for example so that the computer could explode and then the reset cutscene triggers, it might feel a little more natural. But the fact that it removes the need to reset your console at all is a HUGE improvement over the original. It was unique at the time, but not very intuitive.

Overall, very high recommendation from me. The game is still very tough, but this hack makes it much more fun to play.
