Hack description

Pokémon Blue - 151 had a few simple goals:

1) To make it so that all 151 Pokémon could be obtained in a single-player playthrough, without the need for a guide, or any new special new items or evolution methods. All updates were seriously considered to make the most sense without affecting lore, story, or mechanics.

2) To replace any direct, real-world, location references with updated and relevant Pokémon-world references (Example: Lt.Surge the Lightning American is now The Lightning Unovan, as newer games reveal that he is a native born Unovan.)

3) To NOT go overboard with edits! The project does not add new sprites, new music, new regions, new characters, new moves, higher difficulties, etc... It doesn't even "fix" attacks. It does, however, slightly edit Fuchsia City so movement is easier (does not introduce any game skips, whatsoever - just a Quality of Life change.)

This is supposed to be as vanilla as it gets, but also to feel as official as it can be. All re-introduced Pokémon are not simply dumped into easy locations, but they are also not impossibly rare - NONE are at 1% spawn rate. - Everything was thought-out for balance and to fit into the already established story (in some cases, improving the story). The entire game should be doable without a guide. Newcomers should be able to playthrough and succeed simply by talking to NPCs and doing battles and exploring. Older fans will be able to do most of this game from memory - It is not supposed to feel like a rom hack.

Update 1.2: Changed one trade so that NPC dialogue post trade makes sense.

Update 1.2.1: Added an optional "MissingNo Patch" so players can re-enable MissingNo encounters.

Awesome nostalgic upgradeteddybear66552024-07-25Version 1.2.1

Just finished completing the upgrade. It's an awesome mod. I really enjoyed being able to complete the Pokédex on my own. About to start crystal 251 tomorrow!

Amazing, thank you!KennieJim2024-05-05Version 1.2.1

I used to play Pokemon red/blue but I never succeed to complete my Pokédex because I wanted to play on my own and I didn't want to buy 2 times the same game. I complete my Pokedex for the first time because of you !

It would be nice to make some translation patch. I can understand English but it does not feel vanilla to me as I played a French version when I was younger. I'll try Yellow 151 and Crystal 151 later and hope for emerald 386.

Great game that gives you access to all Pokemon, making runs of the game feel way more customizable from a team-buulding perspective. My only complaint is that they moved my boy Lickitung to the post-game (Cerulean Cave), so I can't take him to the Elite Four. I know this was done to make the Mew trade post-game and keep in line with Yellow, but in my opinion, Lickitung should have been moved to it's Japanese Blue location (Safari Zone) like what was done with Jynx. Then make the Mew a gift or something for completing the Dex. It's the only Pokemon not available until after the Elite Four besides the 2 legendaries, making runs through the main game with Lickitung impossible. 4.5/5, only thing missing is Lickitung in the main game, then would be a 5/5 for random team runs of Gen II.

Best hack of this kind I've seen yet, BUT..ClaudeDixon2022-02-28Version 1.2.1

This, for the most part, falls in line with my ideal vision for what an improvement hack should do, but I think the trade evolutions would work better if they were changed to evolve via stone/level.

One of the main appeals of these games is building a team you want, and having to use Pokemon you don't care for solely for the purpose of later trading for something better kind of takes that away. Also, by the time you get the traded Pokemon, it may be too late to learn moves it could learn if you had been raising previous evo. forms at earlier levels earlier on in the game. This could be fixed if there was a move relearner placed somewhere.

Overall though, this is easily a step up over the base game and a must for playing on emulators.

Great hack, especially for first timersheadfallsoff2021-12-06Version 1.2.1

Finding hacks for Pokemon games can be difficult because of how disparate the audiences are. I am a first time player and want to go through the series to see the games as they were, but I don't have access to the playground trading economy from back in the day. This hack presents the perfect balance for those aims.

The only thing to note is there is no Trade Simulation so while you can complete your pokedex through in-game trades, you will need to emulate or have two consoles, carts and a link cable to evolve that Abra you caught early all the way. Which is frustrating but not exactly a criticism, this is clearly spelled out in the guide and explained as the intent of the hack so I never felt let down.

I played this on a Game Boy Colour and it worked perfectly with absolutely no issues. Strongly recommend, and I will be using the 251 patch when I play Crystal. Thanks for the great work!

This is perfect! What I always wanted in Pokémon Game.Pokemonfan982021-04-22Version 1.2.1

This is the perfect rom patch for Pokémon Blue and solves the biggest issue with playing them these days, being able to obtain all the Pokémon in one game. I love this. This is the way I'll be playing Gen 1 from now on. Unlike most Patches this doesn't change anything about the core game other than adding all the Pokémon and having proper evolutions all handled in game. It is exactly what I want, I love that it still feels the same as the base game.

Would love if the creator did this for Gen 2 (fingers crossed for Gold since that's the one I own ha) It would be a dream!
