This hack is arguably the best Tetris version I've ever played, I spent soo soooo much time with this hack already and I always come back for more. So I want to say a BIG THANK YOU for this hack!!:D:D:D

I only miss one single feature really, and that is the ability to hold/switch a block by pressing the A + B buttons simultaneously. A Tetris Clone called Apotris for the GBA (A very great game that everyone should check out also) uses this very feature and I think it works great really and it's more easy than reaching for the select button to hold/switch block.

Maybe it can be made as a separate ips-patch so people can choose which patch they prefer? Because maybe this feature an annoy some people if they like accidentally press A + B at the wrong time, I have not personally had any issues with that occurring thou.

I've been logging a lot of time with this hack and really love it. The only thing I'd change is the position of the hold piece and the next piece(s). If they were switched, or had the option to switch them, this would be 100% perfect.

I've played almost every Tetris version (or clone) on almost every system but I always come back to this. The original Tetris on GB was already a nice version, mostly thanks to the music. But this patch adds all the QoL things on top that you've been getting used to when you played more modern versions of Tetris. The only other Tetris that comes close is probably "Apotris" (my second fav version). I keep recommending this for quite some time now to everybody who even mentions Tetris and everyone agrees that it's fantastic.

The only thing missing for me is a colorization, to make the visuals a little more appealing (like on the NES or GBC DX version). Maybe this happens one day. But still this is the definitive version of Tetris that's currently available imho.

Update: Well, it turns out that my dreams came true. The mentioned DX hack just happened a few weeks ago. Be sure to check it out since it's here on RHDN as well!

This hack brings Tetris GB into the modern age by including more features, and helps propel Tetris to new heights. There isn't much to say about this Hack. It's just pure bliss.

I have very fond memories of the original GB Tetris and as much is I loved Tetris DX's gameplay improvements, Rosy Retrospection is now THE version to play for me. Combining the classic visuals and music with every gameplay improvement we have come to expect in modern Tetris, Rosy Retrospection is a dream to play. With hard drop, great DAS and faster line clears, the game flows perfectly. With other tweaks such as hold, 7-bag grouping and 3-piece previews, you'll find yourself bagging bigger scores, faster, and unlike original GB Tetris, your high scores are saved.

The game works brilliantly on an Everdrive with my Analogue Pocket and I just wish I'd heard of this hack sooner! Ospin deserves all praises as in my opinion he has created the definitive Game Boy Tetris. It's just a shame Nintendo has such an aversion to the romhacking scene as they should stick this on the new GB Switch Online service for more people to enjoy.

When I started playing Tetris more often on the PSP version, it got more addictive and easier to play, specially with the hold and hard drop features. Now that exact way yo play is the same that you can play with the Tetris game who started the fever. Excelent hack.

But, there is something... I need to have the option to disable shadow piece. I know a lot of people likes tha feature, but I guess it would be a wonderful detail to can disable it.

This romhack improves the original Tetris is many ways. Such quality of life updates are essential, and the original GB game really deserved this excellent improvement. In particular, the "Hard drop" feature is what I like the most. This, and other speed adjustments make the game feel very responsive and fast overall. There are other modern features included that have become a standard in Tetris games (7-Bag, hold)

A small inconvenience is the hold piece location. It's easy to confuse the held piece with the piece from the preview of pieces that follow.

This is an amazing hack that I enjoy playing a lot but I just have a couple issues. When I did my initial test I found that the hold piece location always confused me as I thought it was the next piece. Like another review mentioned I think swapping the hold and next pieces would make it easier on people.

My other issue was that after I did my initial test on an emulator I put it on a flash cart and went to play it on an actual Gameboy Colour (with original non back lit screen) and on that system the colour of the shadow piece and the hold piece becomes a yellow that combined with it being just outlines made it extremely hard to see what it actually was and I had to learn to ignore the shadow piece to not distract me from game play as my mind would spend too much time figuring out what it was.

I did try it in black and white mode and that was easier to see. Hopefully you can adjust the shade of the pieces so that when played on a GBC it becomes a better colour.

AWESOME Hack, Thank allot! Tetris is a game that i can play every day but since i Played Tetris99 on switch for a long time... every time i came back to the GB the game was to slow because i missed the new feature that i learned in T99.

Now with this version you have a classic tetris modfied for 2022!

only two points/critics/ideas whatever

1. swap the preview and hold section. every time i looked in my peripheral view i think the hold piece is the next piece. 2. maybe you can add a 5th track as bonus. the track from the tetris 1.0 so we can have all 4 songs in one game

Very well made. I've been seeking a decent, modern version of Tetris to play on my new Anbernic handheld and this fills that niche nicely. Just an all-around excellent romhack.

Huge kudos to the developer for responding to my feedback about some missing SRS kicks. A+

Much to my own dismay Tetris DX used to be my go-to version of Tetris on the GB/GBC platform. This update brings OG GB Tetris back to top of the tier!

Rose tinted glasses impact a lot of Tetris fans on the NES and Gameboy versions of Tetris; the issues with the speed of the game surpassing the ability to input fast enough to move your pieces in time as the levels get to high make it a very tense, carpel tunnel inducing button-mashing fest that will often end in cussing and frustration. This however is fixed and a lot more.

Some new features:

• A drop shadow to help lining up, 2 ahead pieces to what piece you are.
• A reserve spot to hold pieces.
• Much faster movement left and right of pieces
• Clearing takes considerably less time of being paused.
• T-Spins

If you love Gameboy Tetris but wish it was using a more friendly engine, this patch could be for you.

This hack adds many new features to the original game. It has hard drops, shows where the block will drop, shows the block order of the next blocks and press select to save a block for later. Finally I can save my high score too. I love the look of the original Tetris and have more nostalgia for the game than the DX version. This hack has made it so I will probably play this over DX. This is an amazing hack with many great new features. I highly recommend this hack.

I first downloaded the patch when it was in BDF form and gave up when I couldn't figure out how to patch it. So adding the UPS option was the right move here. But honestly, I cannot recommend this hack enough if you are a fan of Tetris. I've been playing the Tengen Tetris since that was my personal favorite amongst old Nintendo consoles, but this hack really takes the cake. Great work!

Other Tetris hacks typically are very minimal in their changes but this one is extremely thorough. Attention to detail like recording new demos really shows how much passion was put in. The modern gameplay changes make this one of my new favorite ways to play Tetris. Before 1.1 I had some trouble with the patch format but now a UPS patch is included so that got rid of my only complaint. 10/10

Works exactly as advertised, and modernizes one of the most classic and iconic games, without sacrificing the original charm.

It would be absolutely fantastic to see all these improvements implemented in the DX version, too.

HOWEVER.... This needs much clearer instructions on how to patch. I would recommend creating a standard IPS patch, or at least explain in detail how to actually patch the ROM. It was a total pain to figure this out!

Seems like it can only be patched easily on a Mac.

EDIT: Updated version contains a UPS patch, meaning it can finally be easily patched by anyone. Because of this, I will now wholeheartedly recommend this.

This patch really is amazing, it totally transforms the original Tetris from being something that was quite frustrating to revisit after years of playing newer versions of the game to something that feels and plays just like a modern iteration. I can easily switch between playing this, Tetris DS and Tetris 99 without any need to change my play style, it really is that comprehensive in its updates.

Just as the headline states; if you have a craving for the retro look and sound of Tetris on the Game Boy, but also want to have all of the modern amenities that came standard on most releases since the 1989 classic, this hack is for you.

There's really not a lot else I can say beyond that. Outside of the mechanical and slight visual differences while playing a round of Tetris itself, everything else looks and sounds the same. It's a nice marriage of the cozy, familiar, 8-bit, monochrome Game Boy aesthetic we all know and love, and the modern mechanics most Tetris releases have up to the present day.

It'll be hard to go back to the vanilla GB game since this hack is near perfect, and the cute name of the hack reflects this as well without too much embellishment. Highly recommended.

Works well, plays well, and it is actually quite impressive to see a Game Boy title of this vintage updated in this way and have so many useful modifications squeezed into it.

I hope a similar patch is released for the DX version at some point. That game feels like it was the start of the Tetris modernization and in multiple ways this patch and its features might feel more appropriate against that version instead.

Just tested this out and have added it to my handheld rom collection. The implementation of all these QoL features is really professional.

I'm always grateful when I see this kind of efforts to bring vintage games to modern standards. Thank you!
