| A great example of how to do a restoration patch. | Mr. Pennington | 2021-11-13 | Version 1.0 |
As another review alluded to, this isn't TECHNICALLY a complete "restoration" of the Famicom version, but I would argue that it's a proper NES Déjà Vu. I'm bothered any time a restoration or "uncensored" patch takes any kind of artistic liberties, reverts things PURELY because they were in the original, or includes things which Nintendo of America wouldn't have let slide in any alternate timeline. All this patch really needed was the scotch and the blood. The graphics which have NOT been reverted — the original 'Game Over' screen and the casino — are not clear instances of censorship, and it seems fairly obvious to me that the latter was intended as a graphical upgrade. So, I think leaving them alone was the correct choice. (Although, the original "REST IN PEACE" screen was awfully cool and didn't spoil the ending.) The reference to an electric chair has not been "restored," but doing so would've involved actually altering the dialogue, not just swapping out a couple words. The Famicom version simply said that the "dentist's chair" LOOKS like an electric chair. The English dialogue ultimately conveys the exact same thing to the player, but skips right to: "Maybe it's a dentist's chair." Ace repeatedly injecting himself strikes me as something even a less cowardly NoA would've objected to. One could argue that pills are no better, but it seems to me like the thinking here easily could've been: "Okay, look, does it NEED to be a syringe or could pills do the same thing?" In my opinion, not obvious censorship and thus, best to leave as is. A long way to go to say, "Thanks for putting the blood and the scotch back," but I feel like too many restoration patches fail to consider context and simply go with the mentality: "original = best." I think this patch serves as a good example of how to objectively uncensor a Nintendo game. (Also, unless I missed it, no signatures have been placed in the game, which is always a good thing.)
| Nice patch, but missing content | televandalist | 2021-07-09 | Version 1.0 |
The patch doesn't restore "all" of the censored content as the description says. It restores the bloody scenes of the dead body and after shooting the alligator. Still missing:
Aside from that, good patch. Just hope it gets updated to actually include all the content.
