Hack description

Like Pokemon Crystal? Don't like all those newfangled Gen 2 Pokémon? Well this may just be the hack for you!

In A Genwunner's Crystal, the only Pokémon in the game are those that have been introduced in Red, Blue, and Yellow! The only exception to this rule are those that evolve from Generation 1 Pokémon into Generation 2 Pokémon, so don't be surprised when Clair's Kingdra wipes out your entire team again.

But that's not all! There are also some bonus changes that were made at like 2 in the morning, including increased gym leader levels, different move sets on important trainers, and a "Brand New" final boss!

Reviews

Does what it says on the tinSaltySumo2023-07-04Version 1.1

Almost perfect. The only issue I had was the Pokedex could use an edit as well, otherwise it has a bunch of gaps around the Gen 2 babies.

Also JSwizzle's review is a perfect example of why we should be able to rate/comment on other users' reviews. So many absolute meatheads on this website that write like an angsty 14-year old who just discovered Robert Christgau.

A hack for those who know what they wantDocLathropBrown2022-04-16Version 1.1

Unlike the previous reviewer, who derided the hack and its quality just because they didn't like the idea-I think, on a technical level, the hack is sound. If you don't like the idea of catering to Gen One nostalgics, then the hack isn't for you. You shouldn't be reviewing the hack if you're going to trash it just for its very premise.

However, if you're like me and dropped-off of the Poke scene after playing Gen Two originally (I played Gold when it came out, but found even 251 Pokemon too much to be invested in catching), then this may be for you. The handful of Gen Two Pokemon left in isn't to my liking (they create entries in the Pokedex, meaning it will show incomplete unless you get the remaining Gen Two 'Mons). Hopefully, a new version that strips out all Gen Two Pokemon completely could be in-the-cards.

As it is, the hack managed to give me the warm-n-fuzzies in just the right way, without being reminded of how far behind I left the franchise. The "Genwunner" mindset is perhaps strange, sure, but hey-we like what we like. If you roll your eyes at those who would enjoy this hack, then you're not much different than those of us who roll our eyes at any post-Gen One Pokemon.

Mediocre HackJSwizzle2021-05-07Version 1.1

The whole genwunner thing of removing the charm that was present in vanilla Crystal is already a killer to this rom - they may as well have removed Kanto and just made a shorter, even more boring Johto with nothing to do in postgame - since that's basically just about what this hack is.

Sorry to be blunt, but I doubt many people are going to play a romhack that removes content out of the whole 'genwunner' mindset - especially if you're not adding something of equal importance in return.

Also stripping Gen 2 of what makes it so good (namely the new Pokemon) is just... too much.

I could understand adding more depth to the shallow GSC Johto - but this. This is just done in bad taste and leaves something to be desired, and a bitter taste in my mouth. This whole terrible idea would be like creating a Ruby/Sapphire hack and removing the Hoenn Pokemon and removing the Battle Tower - nobody would like it.

Try again with another idea, please. Create something a little more original, and then it might be considered worth playing.
