| Great hack, but minor concerns | zstandig | 2023-02-14 | Version 1.2 |
I like the idea of merging a bunch of hacks and bugfixes into one big package. My only concerns are as follows: A) When I try to use this in a flash cartridge for play on real hardware, it doesn't work. Definitive doesn't work either. Granted, when it comes to hacks there's no guarantee that they'll work on real hardware but it's still a bit of a bummer. B) The fast spinning coins etc. While interesting, they look 'weird', that's the only way I can describe it. It's uncanny, they look almost like they don't belong in the same game. C)I suggest integrating other fixes and enhancements if possible -Sound Effect Fix -QOL Improvements -Warp Zone Improvement
| Probably the best way to play Bros. 3 - Even for a non-casual playthrough! | cornholio309 | 2022-05-13 | Version 1.2 |
Even in this hack's current state (with the lack of the introduction music taken from the SNES/GBA ports), I'd still highly recommend this hack either for casual playthroughs or for someone familiar with the game. I'd go as far as to say that this is my favorite way to play vanilla Bros. 3 now! A lot of the graphical adjustments are all things I find enhance the experience. The coin and block animations are silky smooth and look amazing in action. You seriously have to see why this is such a big deal. I also enjoy the other minor touchups, like Big Mario's sprites now having the soles of his shoes recolored to create some nice contrast, as well as stuff such as the removal of the odd dollar sign in the HUD to feel more Mario-esque. It feels like it enhances the feel of the NES visuals without taking away from them outright. It's a nice middle-ground if you weren't too huge of a fan of the SNES visuals but still wanted some sprucing up. Being able to save without the use of savestates is lovely to have for those playing on real hardware and makes the NES version much more comparable to the GBA and SNES ports. Bros. 3 is significantly larger than Bros. 1 and 2 in terms of length and content, so I'm all for this being added. The feature is also significantly more handy than the one in say Mario World, as lives and the Powerup Inventory you can access on the overworld are saved. The addition of the Item Reservation box from Mario World is great to have here. While I love Bros. 3's powerup variety compared to World, it always felt slightly hampered to me due to the difficulty in retaining items. Typically, powerups such as the Hammer Brothers Suit or the Frog Suit were not found in levels too often. When they were, I found it was fairly difficult to keep them for extended periods of time. The Item Reservation box means you can now store them away for levels better suited for their abilities or hold onto them for a bit and play around with less rare powerups. I don't really have any further criticisms or suggestions with the hack that weren't already issues I had with the original Bros. 3. Replayable stages, which would allow extreme cheesing in terms of powerup/life grinding, would be nice to have. I also feel some of the levels are a bit odd in terms of progression (World 7 Fortress #1 with more time or a bigger hint towards the pipe in the main hallway would be nice). I can understand if the author wishes to not touch those to retain the purity of the level design, however. Well worth the download. This is better than the original experience in my eyes with the conveniences and tweaks added.
| Probably the best way to play SMB3 | starlightbotanist | 2022-05-09 | Version 1.2 |
Loving this hack. I had been using the definitive edition hack, which is excellent, but this hack does a few extra things I appreciate. I never realized how much the $ sign in the HUD bothered me until I saw the coin symbol used in this hack. Also, I really like the various fixes and the HUD color changes. Highly recommended!
| SMB3 Ultra Edition is my favorite hack. | Vallenatero2015 | 2021-05-24 | Version 1.0 |
Maybe I still can't believe it, but this hack is one of the best, in fact, the graphics are 20% cooler. So I thank Doodle Dangernoodle for this great game that is a work of art. I still think Nintendo should follow suit and make it an official game for the NES.
| Ugly dithering and arbitrary changes | Dr. Dreadhawk | 2021-05-22 | Version 1.0 |
Although bugfixes are appreciated, the horrible dithering, the arbitrary color decisions and design changes that only represent the author's tastes don't objectively constitute an improvement with respect to the original game and should be made optional patches. I'll give a little example, removing the familiar light cyan in the HUD for a dark lavender color is not only unnecessary but it also won't make for a better contrast, in any case it'll make it worse as white text had a black outline already and vice-versa and the "black only" elements (like the $ or the SMW items) become harder to read because they lack contrast now. Unless changed, I don't recommend this patch.
| This is everything you fans want in SMB3 and more | ActionGamer | 2021-05-21 | Version 1.0 |
I love this hack so far, and as the creator of SMB3 (Definitive Edition) I really appreciate you using my hack as base for your even better hack, and I really love how you kept 99% of everything from my hack in this hack. I also like the addition of SMAS Luigi, which is something I wished I could have put in back then, and I really like the updated GFX. However, with that being said, I don't get why you took out the title screen music as I thought it added to the games charm, unless you had to remove it due to limitations which I can understand. But even then everything else is amazing and I hope for you to continue improving it too.
| Fantastic, but WHY remove the intro music?! | ifightdragons | 2021-05-21 | Version 1.0 |
It's built on an already good hack, that initially had its problems with a janky fireball alteration. But that was thankfully removed. This just adds to that base hack, and makes it even closer to the ultimate version of SMB3. The decision to inexplicably remove the intro music makes no sense, neither is it explained. It's certainly NOT an improvement.
| A solid SMB3 hack | brownjacket | 2021-05-21 | Version 1.0 |
It's hard to fix something that isn't broken and after 30+ years the original SMB3 remains a solid game by today's standards. However, the changes made by Doodle & Actiongamer make a very reasonable case to give this hack a shot. Most of the graphical changes and improvements to gameplay are much appreciated. The Bullet Bills, treasure chests, HUD, etc. all get a facelift. There are a few things that I'm personally not a fan of like how aggressively fast the coins, question blocks, and vines are animated or the little circles on Mario and Luigi's hat. Truth be told, these are just personal aesthetic choices and I would be remiss to focus on these nitpicks instead of applauding the hackers on the spectacular job they've done making a great game feel even more realized. Give Ultra Edition a try if you're interested in changing up your SMB3 experience, I highly recommend this hack.
