Super Mario Bros. (JU) (PRG0) [!].nesHack description
An interesting hack where you star Princess Peach on your search for Mario. This hack combines graphics from Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi's Island, and Kirby's Dream Land. Jumping and the play control have been hacked as well and feel more consistent with Super Mario Bros. 2.Screenshots

This hack may not be something that you want to play as a game, specifically, but it's pretty interesting as a weird experiment. It starts out promising enough, using a black underwater area with hearts as bubbles to show the princess pining for her love Mario, who's been kidnapped for a change. You walk out into a beautiful flowery field with a gorgeous sky overhead that resembles Yoshi's Island, but looks a lot better in 8 bits. You get to the end, and grab an axe (already!?) and end the world. 2-1 is even more beautiful with a pink flowery field; it's easily my favorite part. By now, you've powered up and found... ice balls? I think that's what they're supposed to be, since the princess's dress turns blue, and they freeze the shy guys into blocks of ice, a la Kirby's Adventure, but it's red ice. Fair enough, since the shy guys are red; it probably just uses the same palette. How about the goombas? Brown ice, right? Nope; they get squished. They stay squished for a little while, and then pop back up again. Some enemies glitch a little when they're hit, some hop up a few pixels and stay at that height for reasons, and others are just outright immune. Hit detection is a little weird sometimes, because you can get hit in your midsection by a flying enemy, and sometimes, they get stomped; maybe she's punching them? There's also this section at the end of the game where... actually, I'm not really sure what happened, but I got through it tens of thousands of points and several lives richer. The game is, as another review suggests, a colorful, broken mess, but I think it's one worth experiencing; it's not like the glitches actually impede your progress.

Okay, this one was in my backlog for a good long while. Mostly because I had other games to finish, but I got around to this one today. Honestly, in 4 minutes I got the impression that I wasted time and space in my backlog. The game uses graphics from SMB2, Kirby's Adventure, SMW2: YI and others with palette-swapped foes and all put into the engine of Super Mario Brothers. Good grief, aside from the riot of mismatched colors (some of which aren't all badly chosen) it's the poor mechanical aspects that really bring it down. Controls function extremely poorly, making you feel Peach must be on roller skates , jumping is awkward and hitboxes don't align properly. I thought for sure one of the flyguys was going to kill me, hitting peach in the middle, when it dropped and points were granted. Add to that the oddly nerfed, no worse than that, fire power, which has either no or odd effects on foes and is therefore as usefull as a chocolate hammer. Speaking of which, hammer bros are unbeatable, throwing hammers at breakneck speed and only gaining elevation if hit with fire. Sadly enough, all the above and more bugs beside make it that I recommend you don't touch this hack, not even with a 100 foot pole.
