| More than just a colorization | PowerPanda | 2024-03-11 | Version 1.01 |
This hack is a GB to GBC conversion, and it is done very well. I actually had to go back and play the original to prove to myself that the game was originally in grayscale, because everything about the colorization felt too "perfect". Beyond that though, there are 3 quality of life features that make this the definitive version of the game. First is that the level names actually display on the map, rather than having to reference the manual. This does quite a bit in adding character to the game. Second is that you have an icon indicating when Diddy or DK is in reserve, something that I understand was pulled from future games in this same series. Lastly is that the select button will bring up a menu with a completion checklist. There is no reason to play the original game. Play this version instead.
| A solid colorization with new features that make it the best way to play DKL1! | ScottRubin | 2023-05-01 | Version 1.01 |
Donkey Kong Land is a game that gets criticised often for feeling a bit rough to control (it's not even that bad, i got used to it pretty quickly) and for the inability to properly distinguish sprites from the background (unless you're playing on Game Boy Color, which uses a game-specific palette that makes it more readable), things that for most people is a deal breaker despite the game's strong points (originality, music, gameplay). This hack's objective is to fully colorize the game, while also adding level names from the manual, a menu to easily check your progress, and a speed hack to remove slowdowns (only works in specific emulators, though). This largely fixes most of the drawbacks, making it more easily enjoyable and bringing it to its best form yet. I have beaten and completed this hack and I absolutely recommend it! Huge thanks to specialagentape for bringing this underrated game to its best form yet!

I love color enhancement hacks, and this is one of the best, combining the best of both worlds from playing on a Super Game Boy or a Game Boy Color. The only issue is that the Super Game Boy border seems to be gone...I can't even force it to appear on Sameboy. It also seems to be incompatible with the Super Game Boy in general, which is a shame.

I honestly don't know how people played Donkey Kong Land in its original black-and-white. I feel like a player would almost have to have something other than the original Gameboy to see what's going on. This hack aims to rectify that, and it does it brilliantly. Every level is now aflush with color, specifically palettes that seem to fit perfectly with the environment. If you're still having trouble seeing the Kongs, you can even change their palette too! Quality of Life changes like displayed level names and and a reserve Kong icon are the cherry on top of this amazing project. Do NOT play this game without this hack!
| A hack I was looking forward to | Solid One | 2021-07-23 | Version 1.01 |
Between the Donkey Kong Land games for Gameboy, this is the most unique of all. A lot of randomness between levels, new landscapes, unique gameplay features, etc. The only con that I have is because it's a monochromatic GB game mostly, meaning no colors except for Super Gameboy Enhancements. I liked a lot the idea of coloring old GB games such as Mario Land and Metroid 2, and it's awesome to see that now we also have colors for DKL1. After testing it in my PocketGo, it's working just fine, with colors in all levels I played so far. The only issue I'm getting is some random garbled sprites. Sometimes, I can see some lines between the tiles of the sprites, and also some tiles missing from bananas and kong letters, but I'm not sure if it's something in the emulator I'm using (it's a port of Gambatte for OpenDingux). Despite of that, so far it's working fine for me, so I recommend it.
