Hack description

Pokémon Crystal: 251 is a vanilla Pokémon Crystal hack which allows players to catch all 251 monsters and collect all the special items without the need for a game-link cable. While this was specifically created for play on emulators, it is considerate of players who would like to flash the rom to real cartridges for use on real hardware, and changes nothing which might create incompatibilities. The patch DOES NOT make any attempt at changing or introducing any new evolution methods, sprites, monsters, attacks, difficulties, settings, features, etc... This patch is purely focused on playing through the classic Crystal with organic solutions to not having game-link abilities.

Spoiler-Free Description...

Bugs + Glitches
* A number of bugs and glitches from base Crystal have been fixed. (See Readme for complete list)

Text
*Very little text has been changed - only where it was needed.
*The Game Developer's computer in Celadon shows which patch version is in use, instead of saying not to mess with the game program.

Items
*All Mystery Gift and Time Capsule exclusive items, including hold items and room decorations, are all obtainable in-game now (v2.0+)!

Areas
*A single "patch" of flowers has been added outside Elm's Lab to indicate a successful software "patch" (See image 4).
*A few new areas have been developed, based off of RBYG or alpha/beta references, purely for organic solutions to some of the "missing from Crystal" Pokémon and items.

Pokémon
*Celebi can be obtained via the fully functioning GS Ball Event.
*Missing Legendary Pokémon are waiting to be battled.
*Somehow you will come across one of each of the trade-evolution Pokémon.
*Missing Pokémon who've been re-introduced into the wild take their cues from Gold, Silver, Yellow, Red, Blue, and Green
*Pokémon new to the wild have had considerable thought put into rarity, environment, and balancing
*Ho-oh and Lugia both now have their signature attacks which were only available in Gold and Silver.
*Four unique event Pokémon have been added to replicate the special Pokémon which were originally obtained via Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2.

Trades
*All have been altered in some way, and all are important.
*There is a new character who can help players remember where these trades are located, and what is on offer (see image).

Other
*The three music tracks exclusive to the Japanese mobile adaptor functionality have been added to one specific location each.
*All unused NPC emotes and an unused NPC sprite and NPC color palette have been added in at least one location each.

For a more detailed (spoiler) look at all Pokémon and item locations and changes, check the README file.

*For players who have emulators which accurately keep track of time, or are wishing to flash this patch to a cart which has a battery, there are no extra steps to take. For players who wish to play on emulators which have inaccurate or no time-keeping abilities, it is recommended to patch Crystal 251 with an RTC changer patch (a few are available here on RHDN), I have fully tested and can confirm complete compatibility with Drenn's patch (run Crystal 251 patch first, then the RTC patch): https://retrohackers.net/hack-details.php?id=3948/

*For players who will play on real hardware: All precautions have been taken to ensure that you can link up with all original games and have complete compatibility: GSC, RBY, Pokémon Stadium 1&2, Gameboy Printer, etc. In most cases, if a player were to officially obtain a special Mystery Gift item, like say a Bulbasaur Doll room decoration, BEFORE triggering the new in-game event, the in-game event will recognize this, and skip over the event entirely so there will be no confusion. In a few instances, this will not happen, but will not create any issues; the game will simply say that the player has unlocked the new doll.

UPDATES:
* Newest Version: v2.3
* Old save files can be used, but be sure to save inside of a Pokémon Center before updating. Patch using a fresh Pokémon Crystal (Rev 1) rom. See README for more detailed info on patch version history.

My new favorite Pokemon ROMArindur2023-07-04Version 2.3

It completes the game, integrates Mystery Gift and Time Capsule exclusive items smoothly. The new Pokémon locations feel natural and balanced, all new content added is high quality and fits seamlessly into the game. Returning locations are not exact copies of the Gen 1 ones, such as the Seafoam Caves etc, so they are still fresh experiences. Highly recommended.

First of all, I'd like to thank you Razormime for making this awesome hack for the community. I can easily see all the passion you put into it, it's a work so well done that it's impossible to figure out it's a fanmade hack and not an official release. An incredible way to revisit Johto and Kanto especially now that we have the Analogue Pocket to run these patched games flawlessly. The hack as it is now is fantastic, period. If you don't mind I'd like to suggest something regarding the trade evolutions. RichterSnipes used a super clever solution in his FireRed hack (Pokémon Throwback, hack number 1981), you send your pokémon through the Bill teleporter (northeast of Cerulean City) and the game simulates a trade, even trades that require stones (like Onix - Steelix for example), you just have to send the corresponding pokémon with the right held item through the teleporter and it will evolve. This method doesn't break the game like fixing an arbitrary level to evolve or creating some kind of evolution stone, it's an elegant and organic way to do the trick. I don't know how difficult it would be to implement it here, again, thank you very much for the hack you delivered, I'm just trying to suggest something that would make it shine even more.

Amazing hack, the best experience even as a first-time player.Incantator2023-01-05Version 2.1

This is simply amazing. It was so fun trying to capture everything thanks to the detailed information of what was changed in the hack. There was not a single misleading nor wrong piece of information I found in the accompanied text file. Even the post-game was trimmed with care. I was so disappointed when I got to the Safari zone and realized that normally I could not even enter there, but what was waiting for me was something more delightful. It would have been challenging to put those legendary Pokémon in a place that suits them, and the author did a great job at making them fairly natural; some terrains and cave details are top-notch, while in some cases they were left as a small puzzle that fit the natural surroundings of the area.

Again, it is accompanied by a text file that includes all of the changes, so you can decide yourself before playing it. Personally, I cannot think of how much I would have been disappointed if I played Pokémon Gen 2 vanilla instead of this. Very recommended.

[Edited] Unfortunately, the hack seems not compatible with PKHEX. I used to edit my team after the league to do Battle Tower/Frontier stuff. If that is what you are looking for as well as your post-game, I would recommend you to stick to Vanilla or possibly other hacks.

The version you should be playing.ThegreatBen2022-09-09Version 2.0

Just played this to completion. It was amazing! Everything added was either seamless or above the quality of the original game.

The addition of rare Pokemon as static encounters was my favorite part. If I had to offer one criticism it's that the room decorations are almost all only available at the very end of the game, when you're likely done in Johto.

Thank you for making this I enjoyed it immensely.

A Dream come trueAizumi2022-06-10Version 1.1

This hack is exactly what I have wanted for ages. Of course I understand the original concept of the games, trading with friends and all...but that's just not me. I would like to be able to achieve everything without having to be tied to others or having any other prerequisites. I want to have fun and not be frustrated that I can't achieve certain things.

So, thank you very much Razormime for creating this! I really love it, because the whole experience feels like it's just original. Everything has been so cleverly inserted that you don't even notice that anything has been artificially changed. Everything fits perfectly into the action, the locations of the previously missing Pokémon have been thoughtfully chosen, you just notice the attention to detail.

Absolutely recommended for all those who love Gen 2 and are looking for a 251 hack!

Brilliant HackKevCfcNo12022-04-23Version 1.1

What an effort from Razormime here. Was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The main idea for me here was to show my kids how good this was when I was younger and I couldnt believe how much I enjoyed it personally as an adult now. The additions added aswell are top notch and add so much to the game. If you love the pokemon games then this will be a real treat for you. Keep up the good work Razormime.
