Compared to the original version who was laggy it was great! I had even some fun playing it! I tried the two versions on emulators and the GDMA version was laggy everywhere (maybe my emulators were not the best, anyway. With the no-GDMA version, MGBA was laggy, Higan was great I also tried with a Chinese linker for GBC. The GDMA version had graphical issues, and the no-GDMA version was PERFECT I also made a gameplay video of the No-GDMA version on Higan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K84hfWvjPfQ
| Incredible achievement - just plain fun! | PrestoMto | 2022-01-02 | Version 1.0 |
It's an honor to be the first to review this game - because this hack is an incredible technical achievement! And it's just plain fun! To take a step back, the first FPS ever created was Maze War (1973) - which was remade as MIDI Maze (1987) for home computers - and as Faceball 2000 (1991) for portable and home console systems. Playing Faceball 2000 (1991) for the original Game Boy could be fun, but given how choppy the framerate was, it was hard to really get immersed in its world. But now, 30 years later, kkzero and AntonioND have fixed all that! Aside from fully colorizing the game, this hack upgrades the framerate to be, from what I can tell, fully up to the speed of the original MIDI Maze (1987) for the Atari ST home computer. The version I tested (w/ GDMA on SP hardware) like most GBC games, ran a little more slowly on the later, larger levels - about as fast as the first level on the unreleased Atari 8-bit port. The colors look to have been chosen to match the Game Gear port, which, considering that is said to be based on the same engine, is a great choice! I wasn't able to try multiplayer, but I can confirm based on playing the single-player campaign and arena mode with bots so fluidly, that this port is now one of the top 2 versions of MIDI Maze/Faceball, and for sure some of the most fast-paced action you'll find in the GBC library!
