Wonderful to experience an old game in a new way!ShadowN642023-12-16Version 4.0

A little buggy in a couple of areas but really cool to see the Super Metroid game (most of it) running on the Zero Mission engine. Thanks! 9/10

Put together pretty wellChimera Bruv2021-11-11Version 4.0

A very nice port, well balanced all around

I got 94% in my first run, had a few problems but not a big deal.

i recommend it since samus moves around quickly, it's a blast to play just like vanilla Zero Mission.

An accurate portDarrman2021-10-16Version 4.0

I played this hack along with some friends recently. In most regards, the hack is very accurate to the original Super Metroid. The main differences are with the boss fights, but I accept that actually implementing bosses such as Phantoon into Zero Mission would be a difficult task.

The only actual issue I have with Super Metroid on the GBA is the extreme length taken in places to avoid sequence breaking. I spent several minutes trying to make the wall jump to grab the Wave Beam early, except the developers made it impossible to actually grab that block for some reason. Considering ledge grabs are generally universal, this annoyed me.

Aside from that, this is a very good recreation of Super Metroid on the GBA, and I would highly recommend anyone who likes the original Super Metroid to give this hack a try.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

I played this hack earlier back when it was on Metroid Construction. I'm not particularly fond of Zero Mission on its own - it gets fiendish with the shinespark puzzles and the stealth section rubs me the wrong way. However, I do like how Samus herself plays in ZM and Fusion, and I really like Super Metroid. If you also like those, I think you'll enjoy this hack as well.

Super Metroid's map has been recreated here as faithfully as possible, without adding any content that wasn't originally in Zero Mission. Obviously ZM is missing some of Super's gimmicks like the Grapple Beam, so the authors have gotten creative with using ZM's zip-line rails instead. There's other replacements like that throughout the mod, and while some feel a little more janky than others, they all feel thought out and faithful to Super. You can see this same philosophy with the bosses - since Phantoon, Draygon, and others aren't in ZM, their arenas are reworked for ZM's own unique bosses.

That's another janky point. Crocomire is present here, but it's the beta Crocomire fight found in some other hacks on RHDN. Unfortunately, this means it's unpolished and a little buggy. When I fought him, he walked right through me and into an adjacent room, making it easy to shoot him in the back with missiles. He's the worst of the bunch but I also wouldn't replace him with a different boss, he just needs work. The other bosses also haven't had their health values adjusted for the different order; a pass for balancing wouldn't hurt.

The only other major point against this hack is the lack of Super Metroid's soundtrack. I like ZM's music, but Super's fits Super's map perfectly. The absence is most obvious in Brinstar. I suppose it's not a deal breaker - I'm not sure how well Super's music would transition to the GBA's audio.

In spite of this, though, I would absolutely recommend this hack. I had a lot more fun with it than with vanilla Zero Mission, and I'm looking forward to return trips to beat my time and item percentage. Fans of Super might see this as just a watered-down version of the original, but I still recommend checking it out. And if you're looking for Super Metroid on actual GBA hardware, this isn't bad at all.
