| My favorite Zero Mission Hack | ShadowN64 | 2023-12-21 | Version 1.2a |
Where to even begin on this one? First, it's massive. It took me about 6 hours to complete and that was only an 88% completion. And yes, there were a few times where going back and forth trying to find the next item was a little tedious, but not unnecessarily so. It ended up being a good mix of "I know where to go" and "I need to explore a bit more and discover new pathways". The warp zone is again very much appreciated. Being able to quickly travel to various parts of the maps is a huge quality of life thing. Loved it. The original Spooky Mission still has its own charm but this one improved on it in many ways: larger, more bosses (not just Zero Mission bosses either!) and the same humor I enjoyed in the first. The Express at the end was also a fun little scene. Tremendous hack, lots of fun, definitely recommend. 10/10!
| Top Pick for a Metroid Experience made by fans | Mylocke | 2023-10-28 | Version 1.2a |
SpookyMission2 is great. It's a huge map to explore and doesn't feel arduous to traverse. Pacing seems to be a tad on the slow side, but I think that makes it feel more like a main line game. Biomes are amazing and again I love the music coming from different games on different consoles entirely. Especially DKC2 and Silent Hill / Resident Evil? It gives it the atmosphere that Metroid music can't quite express. I only got lost at one part but that probably could have been avoided if I hadn't played in 1 hour chunks and sequence broke. Otherwise they do an amazing job of pointing the player in the direction of where they should go next with inter biome shortcuts and a neatly executed teleportation system, which helps makes it feel more like a 3D world you are exploring in 2D, much like a Prime 1 & 2 mixed with Dread. Difficulty is not bad, Enemies weren't too hard despite 2 hours of only having the powerbeam. Resource economy was very well balanced. So even if you're a beginner and want to explore an amazing Metroid fan game, this one should be one of your top picks.
| WOE BETIDE POLAR EXPRESS DENIZENS! | jm102887 | 2021-11-16 | Version 1.0 |
Ahhhh, Spooky Mission....a short but sweet hack that I loved quite dearly for its enjoyable little world, great music, and sense of humor. Spooky Mission 2...can it live up to its predecessor? Well...when the Readme has Imago listed under Known Bugs, then I'd say that's a definite! STORY: Imago is back! Oh noes! But not only that, he's trying to work with the Polar Express to bring us a neverending Christmas!? OH NOES!!!!! NEVA!!!! THE WORLD: Really, Spooky Mission could take a few hours to get through, but even then, it was still a fairly short hack. THIS game on the other hand gives us a much larger world to explore, from the starting Crypts housing Samus's grave, the enormous Spider's Nest (shudder!), the labyrinthine Flaming Boneyard, and several others, including some surprise locations if you're familiar with the first game. All in all, the Spooky world is far more massive than it originally was, so there's plenty to explore and get lost in for that good-old Metroid feel! GAMEPLAY: Not too much different here. Spooky Mission never really changed up the standard formula of Zero Mission and neither did this one. Same good old fashioned Metroid gameplay as ever. This game isn't TOO difficult, but it can get hard in several places, particularly when some....surprise foes make guest appearances. FUN: Do you really need an answer there? Lol of course it's fun! Spooky Mission was great fun having Samus explore locales that were beyond the kind she normally would venture into, so Spooky Mission 2 is just more of that and plenty more of the same quirky humor brought to us by the first game. There's a whole team involved and it shows as it feels like a legit full-release game that doesn't take itself seriously. MY RATING: 9.5/10 Man this was a fun one. It was fun to explore, fun to find new gear (and laugh at what they had to say about themselves :P), fun to visit new locales with more weird foes to face, and fun to find all the surprises that were definitely not what I expected. I may be late for the Halloween season, but this was a superb treat and that's no trick!
| Officially Spoopy | Mirby | 2021-11-09 | Version 1.0 |
I played this hack when it first released and... wow. The first one was pretty great, but this one is expansive and truly feels like an official game. The world is decently sized, the design is fantastic, the powerups are well-placed... I was immensely impressed with it. Definitely a very well-made hack with plenty of surprises. This isn't just Zero Mission with an autumnal coat of paint, it's a lot more than that.
