Hack description

This patch changes Star Fox from using the Super FX chip in 10 MHz mode to 21 MHz mode. On hardware the patch is compatible with the GSU-1, GSU-2 and GSU2-SP1 revisions of the Super FX chip. All testers have reported a noticeable difference in speed.

This could not be possible without the help of Vitor Vilela!

Definitely noticeable !CoolK2021-12-24Version 1.4

Who knows the original Star Fox and then the creation of this hack knows what technical sophistication is behind it. It was actually a big thing got StarFox running on SFX2 and a very big thanks to Vitor Vilela !

So I can't understand the rating of Blazing... I also can't understand using ZSNES. That thing is outdated (LU: Jan. '07)

Better use SNES9X and check this comparison video made with SNES9X 1.60 (t1p.de/s1ui)

In a word, disappointingBlazing2021-12-23Version 1.4

I'm not sure what I was supposed to expect from a hack that boasts about higher speed. But then again, I've played Star Fox on ZSNES, which basically does the same thing with overclocking the speed. It's worth noting that Snes9x runs Star Fox a tad faster than on console, but over all keeps most of the slow framerate that nobody likes.

I bring this up to help give context to this review. This speed hack is nothing new. It's already possible using an outdated emulator and its not fun to play. But my main complaints are as follows.

  1. 1 Music no longer syncs up: A lot of people in other reviews give Nintendo a bad rep for this game being so slow. But here is the genius thing they did. Knowing the game didn't run at top speed, they made the music line up with the slow gameplay. That's gone now and it's jarring. I beat the first boss of route 1 (attack carrier) with the main part of the boss theme barely playing before his life was gone.
  1. 2 The speed changes but the player doesn't: Because the game runs faster, players do not have as much reaction time to dodge obstacles or incoming attacks. A person's thumb can only mash so fast, so players have to compensate for the faster speed. Star Fox was never a game that gave me a sore thumb. This hack did on one playthrough.

If you think I'm crazy, go play star fox and ZSNES. You'll find a new meaning to word "speed" there.

Faster and more fun gameplay!!RHZ2021-12-08Version 1.3

Awesome Hack!! Highly Recommended!! Going from Super FX chip 10,74 MHz to 21,477 MHz makes the gameplay faster and more fun to play. It's great that the music plays at the original speed.

It'd be great having Stunt Race FX and Vortex using something like this to improve its speed. Thanks!!

I didn't even know a hack like this was possible, but I'm very glad it was made. Slowdown has been removed for most of the game, only rearing its ugly head when there's a lot of enemies and obstacles on screen. Though removing slowdown means the game is somewhat sped up, its a small price to pay to have the game run smoother. The music still runs at the same speed as well, making this the definitive edition of Starfox on the SNES. Don't try and play the original game again and just use this labor of love instead.

An impressive hack, and a great improvement to the game. But it must be noted that Star Fox was not designed for the SuperFX 1 in the first place; it was designed for the "MARIO" chip. This was the original version of the SuperFX, which ran at half the speed of the SuperFX 1 and 2. (I guess you could call it the SuperFX 0.) There's actually no difference between the SuperFX 1 and 2 besides the ROM sizes they support: SuperFX 1 = 1MB maximum, SuperFX 2 = 2MB max.

Some Star Fox cartridges out there do have a SuperFX 1 inside; those carts were made after other SuperFX games started coming out and the "MARIO" chip was retired, since Star Fox was the only game to use it. (Each SuperFX was backwards-compatible with the earlier model.)

For what it's worth, Star Fox 2 was designed for (and runs just fine on) the SuperFX 1. I realize this is all pretty messy and confusing but thought it was worth pointing out nevertheless. Just think of this patch as an upgrade from SuperFX 0 to 1, instead of from SuperFX 1 to 2. :)

The Little Starfox hack That Couldkaine232021-11-16Version 1.1

This is another hit from Kando! He used his magic and made Star Fox run faster using the processing power of the super fx2 chip! Levels, fighters and bosses will run faster than before so strategies that worked in vanilla Star Fox may need some adjusting. Give this a try, highly recommended!

Wow! Star Fox the way I thought I remembered it...Adam Catalyst2021-11-16Version 1.1

When I went to go re-play Star Fox from my youth, I couldn't believe the low frame-rate, and how choppy it was. The game played significantly worse than I remember. This patch improves the frame rate an incredible amount. I don't know what the numeric value is, but the gameplay feels an order of magnitude better. This is incredible. Highly recommended.

Improve an already good gameYoshiWhite622021-11-16Version 1.1

Star Fox is not a game that aged well due to being from the first 3d games of the consoles This hack improves an aspect that was necessary: speed in the game. At first it seemed unnecessary, but I see that the romhacker who did this achieved something that Nintendo did not want to do. Recommended to anyone who liked Star Fox.
