| So much content you can actually burn out!? | Kost | 2023-12-11 | Version 3.05 |
For some reason every other review here lists as having played version 1.1, but the project is currently at 3.05 (The stat tab/costume update). So, I kind of had mixed feelings when playing this hack. This hack is, in a word; content content content. If you ever wished that you could live inside FFVI forever, this hack is for you as there's so much more to do. Not including the achievements & completion stuff, there's probably about 30 hours worth of quality additional content in the game in the form of new bosses/enemies, new dungeons, new quests, events, gameplay changes and NPC dialogue. Most of it is pretty good too. They also added in a QoL .lua file that you can load that does a ton of things that I wish were always in the game. Press a button to show everyone's spell learning %. Press a button to pull up an enemy bestiary with their drops and weaknesses. Did you ever wish Gau's rages told you what special move they did? Well now they can and it's very convenient. There's a BGM player that lets you customize which tracks you want to play for combat music and there's a lot to choose from taken from many different classic RPGs, not just Final Fantasy. Now for the cons 1) This game's hard and I would classify it as a hard type. The author is the type that likes to punish you if you try to solve mechanics in a way he doesn't like, but some people are into that so this might be a pro for you. Whether you're a sweaty gamer or a cheese lover, you'll find something to like about it if you're into more difficult content. With that said, this hack is definitely not for everyone and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to think too hard or get stuck at all. 2) This game has a lot of bugs. Post combat graphical gibberish, scrambled sprites, text that's partially in another language and showing up as disjointed gobbledygook, soft locks, rainbow screens, spells randomly unlearning themselves, you name it it's there. 3) This hack really feels like what it is, a vanilla game with gameplay and translation changes and a crap ton of DLC tacked on to it after the fact rather than a cohesive experience. 4) The hack doesn't really feel like it starts until WoR. That's like 12 hours maybe? You'll spend most of that time comparing Mato's translations to your terrible memory of the original english localization team and all the other romhacks of FFVI you've played. So with all that said, out of the FFVI hacks I've played so far, I would rank this one at #2. There were some things I didn't like about it, but it does deliver on what people who get into romhacks desperately wish for the most; more game of the games they love.
| Mesmerizing, Unforgetable Experience! | Jinx The Kitty | 2023-10-06 | Version 1.1 |
Having finally concluded my adventure within FF6 T-Edition, I'd say it's both the greatest version of FF6 and without a doubt, the most superb FF experience you can possibly have. Mind you, I've ventured them all countless times. The romhack deserves an abundance of praise throughout time and I'm blessed, having the opportunity to enjoy this compelling, challenging adventure from start to end. If you've never played FF6 T-Edition, and you're a fan of FF6 or simply an FF fan in general.. You cannot POSSIBLY go wrong playing this... Yes, it'll likely be the most time-consuming, challenging journey you've ever embarked upon in Final Fantasy. But It's also exceedingly grand and abundant with a broad selection of content. You'll most likely find yourself invested into this for near or perhaps over 100hrs. Yes, you'll want to complete all the end-game content and quests. Along with reaching Lvl99, if you want any hope of defeating the final boss. He's no push over like in the original FF6. If you got what it takes to go on the greatest journey you've ever embarked upon. Give it a try. But it won't be easy. :)
| Beautiful and expansive hack, praiseworthy but not without flaws | X-or | 2023-08-17 | Version 1.1 |
First I would like to stress that I recommend this patch and that it deserves all the praise it got considering how massively it expands the original; the graphical changes and the translation are truly of high quality. With all that said this hack is not without flaws and not for everyone either and I didn't like some of the modifications they made to the original gameplay features : Right at the beginning, you'll notice that Terra and the two soldiers all have exactly the same Magitek attacks and the Ice/Fire beam were removed. And this is a trend you'll see a lot in the gameplay changes : streamlining everything and removing what made certain chars unique. Gau now has a Fight command, Umaro is controllable and so on... Honestly what's the point, it just removes variety from the gameplay. The other problem is some jarring inconsistencies. For example, adding monsters from other FF titles is great, but when they mix them up in the same encounter, you can tell they are not from the same game just from the glaring graphical inconsistency. They better had kept the encounter sets consistent, you fight either FF4 or FF5 or FF6 but don't mix them up in the same encounter because the difference is jarring. There is also a spatial coherence issue in some of the new areas they've added. You can have two doors one next to another that both directly lead to a gigantic room and you can tell it makes no sense spatially because the two big rooms should overlap. The original game had no such aberration and it would have a left and right corridor in between to keep the whole thing spatially coherent.
| Simply a Masterpiece, thank you Tsushiy and Mato!!! | GardeniaChan | 2023-04-27 | Version 1.1 |
Pretty much a masterpiece. Challenges done right, fixed tons of game issues and feels like how FF6 should be. It's a difficult game that is designed for people who completed FF6 at least twice in their life. 3.0.1 is great as well, with the addition of stat tabs for statmaxxing. Now I am doing low level challenge NG+ with maxed stats just for fun. Thank you Tsushiy for the hack and Mato for translating this!!!
| When do I get a turn? | somberlaindx | 2022-12-08 | Version 1.1 |
So yeah. Some kool changes I guess. I mean its ff6 its gona be a pretty good game regardless but I gota say.. The random @$!# overs that come out of nowhere are incredibly frustrating. Oh neat new esper! Get slaughtered, lose an hour of game play for not grinding enough. Just one example. A pattern I had to get used to. The new strategies are really nice and add incredible depth to each encounter but are often over shadowed by the constant 3 turns of aoe spells or a incredibly crazy amount of status effects. It's like every other boss is a Marlboro fusion.. The amount of spells and skills enemies have can be absurd! Sometimes I was just like wtf lol. Def some holy @$#! Moments. I often find myself asking when do i get a turn to play? Especially during times where you are limited to a small party or are not using your primary group and their magic/level are too far behind. I'm usually around 10% hp before my first round then spend my turn struggling to reestablish myself to begin. This is definitely not a game for anyone thinking they can just play and adapt on the fly. Grinding is a must. Be over leveled and save often. A lot of what I said can be seen as both positive or negative depending on what you are looking for. Over all the game is pretty good but could definitely use some rebalancing.
| One of the best romhacks for experienced players but could get some polish | Ariel212 | 2022-08-26 | Version 1.1 |
This is by far one of the best FF hacks overall. There's a plethora of additional content and some pretty challenging battles. I love how almost any relic and piece of equipment has is own usefulness that goes beyond the raw power/defense. Also, the fact that many enemies drop useful and even rare equipment is cool!. Now about the oufit system... It's pretty cool overall, and most of the visuals are nice, but... Some are really weird, and it will be better if they really have some major differences between them. Of course, some of them allow different playstiles, but overall they're just beefed versions of each other. It's not bad, but it will be nice if someone really worked to make each one of them more unique. Also, i know it's almost impossible, but it would be awesome if each costume comes with it's own unique ability, instead of just having two - the basic one and the relic upgrade. At last, but not least, some balancing on difficulty will be nice too. I like how it's challenging overall, but the final dungeons really have some brutal fights that simply forces you to spam mimicked Bahamuts or dual ultimas. It will be nice if they added some mechanics to create a little more variety, or at least encourage you to do something different. Still, a must play for all final fantasy fans. Go for it!
| An overall amazing hack with a few missteps | atrocity3010 | 2022-01-09 | Version 1.1 |
I should preface this review by saying that while I will point out what I feel are some flaws of this romhack, it was still immensely satisfying and possibly the best JRPG romhack I've ever played. Considering that it was done by one person for their own enjoyment and yet has an insane amount of new content and care put into it, that is an incredible feat. PROS:
CONS:
Overall, despite my grievances FF6 T-Edition is a must-play due to the sheer amount of extra content and sequences that were handled with great care, to the point where they feel like natural extensions to the story. Just be warned that if you want to beat the game, you'll need to grind a ton to do so.
| Polished hack that adds a lot of endgame content | Ticron | 2021-12-06 | Version 1.1 |
A big thanks to Tomato for translating this! This is one of the most complete and polished hacks I've played, and isn't too far away from feeling like an official SE release. While it does add some QOL changes that other hacks have done before (like always on Sprint Shoes), about 90% of the content comes at the end of the game. A lot of it is beating powerful bosses in order to get items to beat more powerful bosses. It's not incredibly unfair - but it is a big step up in challenge compared to the original game. I grinded up to level 90, and some bosses will still destroy you with bad luck or the wrong strategy - and some of those strategies are incredibly inventive, and make you feel like a genius after figuring them out. But even completing the base game will put you through the paces. Kefka's tower isn't much harder than the base game, until you get to his final phase where he is stronger than "super bosses" like Shinryu and Omega Weapon. Speaking of, this hack borrows a lot from other games in the series. It fits in mostly seamlessly, but there is a stylistic difference between the original FF6's "dark" style and the more "bright" imported sprites. It's a minor gripe that doesn't distract from the monumental amount of work that was put into this. The bosses from FF1 to more modern releases are also here, in a secret area that unlocks additional artwork as you defeat them. In the end, that's what a lot of this hack adds - endgame side quests that often culminate with really, really difficult bosses that net you powerful gear. That isn't to say there isn't more it adds on the way (for example, Esper level-up bonuses being cut really changes character progression), but that's most of the content. It took me a little under 100 hours to finish, much of which was grinding with fast-forward. In short, it's recommended if you love FF6, want to see the base game "remixed", want more content, and don't mind a challenge. While newcomers to FF6 (but not RPGs in general) could probably finish it, this is a hard game that would probably be more suited to veterans.
