| A decent but hard hack | mrcatford | 2024-04-08 | Version 1.1 |
I wish there was a "meh" instead of yes or no. I mean it was doable but on ROB mode? Hahaha. No. Some of the weapons were pretty damn useless and the jumps were almost precision perfect. The last stage of Protoman's castle made me get hella anxious really fast till I knew about the Super Arrow, and then there was some trolly stages that had a ladder that went underneath and around till you figured out to go right. Other then that eh. It was good. Would I replay again, nah. Probably if there was more story, and Megakememedad (or something like that) was worth a challenge. But overall it was okay at best.
| One of the worst Mega Man hacks ever made | cschifani | 2021-12-17 | Version 1.0 |
Mega Man V AV boasts new weapons, new boss AI, new weaknesses, and new levels. It also features a brilliant, never-before-used conceit: the behavior of the Mega Buster weapon now depends on the strength of your charge, the buttons you've pressed, and how recently you've fired a shot. In the right hack, all of these elements would make for a fun, exciting, and strategic romp through one of the stalwarts of the Mega Man series. Regrettably, AV is not that kind of hack. Instead, it takes inspiration openly from Chiko, a notorious Japanese ROM hacker who created a number of fiendishly difficult ROM hacks around the turn of the last decade, largely by littering the game with spikes and enemies in cheap placements and, least laudably, by plagiarizing most of the "novel" elements in his works. While AV IS, to its credit, all new and not plagiarized, it takes the vicious and unfun difficulty of Chiko's hacks to new heights. Spikes and precision jumps are everywhere, enemies are placed at awkward angles that make some damage extremely difficult to avoid, and your best weapon, your buster, is hamstrung by repeated use. Even the Robot Masters, given puerile names by the hackers, are outright broken, sometimes freezing permanently in the middle of an attack and allowing you free reign to crush them. The game also requires frequent use of the Rush Coil, yet doesn't bother to use Puresabe's "Good Dog" fix that prevents it from jumping when you are near it but haven't leapt onto it, in spite of its use of other "optimization" hacks. This results in a great deal of entirely avoidable wasted weapon energy and unintended leaps onto spikes when your sprite crosses Rush's. The castle level design requires even more precision sliding (dashing) and flying/leaping than the Robot Master stages, more inching past spikes, and more attempting to hit bosses with weapons that don't fly straight. The level design reaches its nadir in Wily 1, where you must traverse a series of wheel-lined corridors while being bombarded with unstoppable fireballs. The other levels aren't much better; in fact, their design makes the levels in Chiko's hacks appear downright inspired. Ultimately, the hack fails because it ignores sound principles of level design while also not altering any of the enemies to account for the marvelous new buster it gives you. The result is a game that requires you to shoot straight with a permanently broken, crooked weapon, resulting in more cheap shots than thrills. Mega Man V AV could have been a masterpiece of creative game and level design. Instead, it bafflingly pays hommage to most of Rockman hacking's worst trends, resulting in a game that is more frustrating than playable. If you hate Mega Man and all that he stands for, you should rejoice that such a hack exists. For everyone else, you would do well to look elsewhere for fun, because there's almost none to be had here. Mega Man V AV is, simply put, one of the worst Mega Man hacks ever made; not even Chiko's worst and most egregious creations can rival it.
| AV (MM5 hack) - the first sample of the pen? | diablo666 | 2021-11-26 | Version 1.0 |
I thought I'd meet another unique hack for the Mega Man series. However, I came across this hack. And... I'm disappointed. If we talk about the pros and cons, then I met a lot of cons. Level Design. Honestly, I thought he would be fine, but no. All levels according to the Local Level Design are either difficult and dishonest, or impassable without pain.
Music. Honestly, the MIX that was created is painful to listen to. Because some of the keys in the MIX are either too high or very fuzzy in sound... The main ability and secondary. We start the game with a "Blaster"... It works very strangely and in some way incorrectly. Plus - I had a strange bug that appeared from a large number of objects (sprites) on the screen. Secondary abilities also don't work as they should... they managed to break them. An example is: The ability of Stone Man. In the original - it works strangely, but without getting stuck in the walls. And it gets stuck. Or the ability of Wave man - activating, it turns into an enemy and deals damage to us. The only plus that I highlighted: Bosses, or rather 8 Robomasters. They have been changed by AI - and they act differently, but it is interesting. However, I cannot but note that it has not been done to the end. Unfinished, but interesting bosses. I hope the hack will improve, but at the moment - I can't recommend it
