| The most unnecessary ROM hack for a Game Boy Advance game EVER. | Gabe2006 | 2023-11-12 | Version 1.0 |
Let's be real here, even if you prefer this hack over the original release of Pac-Man Collection, it's still pointless. First off, how exactly are the menu sounds "ear-grating" when they're just modified sound effects from Ms. Pac-Man and Dig Dug (which were also used in Namco Museum, thus making this hack break consistency between the two)? Not to mention the sampled "Extra Life" sound in Pac-Man doesn't seem to fit quite right with the altered sounds of the port, and you could've just copy-pasted the one from Ms. Pac-Man in Namco Museum, which also samples the sound from the arcade version of the game. Second, the colours in Pac-Man, Pac-Attack and Pac-Mania were altered to better fit the original AGB Game Boy Advance's screen, as it was too dark and didn't feature a backlight (until the Game Boy Advance SP gave it a brand-new AGS screen with said feature). Considering that there's such thing as "Color Correction" in emulators like mGBA and VisualBoyAdvance-M, this also makes it even more useless (and not gonna lie, the arcade colours for Pac-Mania in this hack look pretty darn ugly). Third of all, when Pac-Man is facing upwards/downwards, his mouth is supposed to have another pixel added to it, (which is used as his left/right facing sprite in the original release of Pac-Man Collection) just like in the original arcade version. Super Pac-Man in the first intermission is also inaccurate, as it still uses the sprite from Pac-Man Plus rather than the OG Pac-Man. Talk about being a "more faithful" hack, it isn't worth one second of my time. 1/10, Only Pac-Attack's restored colours look good in this hack. Other than that, just play the original Pac-Man Collection with Color Correction enabled in whatever emulator you're using. For OG Game Boy Advance SP owners, get used to it. It's not like it's that big of an issue anyway (not even the smaller Power Pellet sprites in the Scroll view of Pac-Man, which I barely even take notice of).
| Come home to the classics with this improvement | SuperStarFox | 2022-01-24 | Version 1.0 |
With Pac-Man Museum Plus on the horizon soon, JY did something that no one has ever done or ever improve before. He put as much effort as he could to make all the games play exactly like their original counterparts. For Pac-Man, the power pellets look bigger and the sprites were fixed to look more like the original game. The colors look exactly like the ones from the arcade port and it manages to get the job done properly. For Pac-Man Arrangement, some of the colors were tweaked to be a little more like the ones from Namco Classic Collection Vol. 2 even though it's hard to see which. For Pac-Mania, the colors are less bright more colorful and feels more like the original Japanese arcade port. The levels like Block Town, Pac-Man's Park, Sandbox Land, and Jungly Steps look better thanks to these improvements. For Pac-Attack, the colors were tweaked to be more like the Sega Genesis version but with a little less brightness to make your eyes strain. I've played and live streamed this game for the past few hours and already it feels like an official improvement but with a couple new changes. Even a few sound effects from Pac-Man were pitched or adjusted to be a little more like the arcade game. Although, they're only a couple things that would be either possible or impossible to fix. The full screen ghosts from Pac-Man feel more like their eyes would move in an opposite direction. For example, when they go up their eyes go up-right or up-left. When they move down, their eyes go down-right or down-left. I also think that the pitch for the sound effects and fanfares should be changed a bit to sound closer to the arcade game, same goes for Pac-Man Arrangement. Other than that, this hack is very good and accurate to their console counterparts and I say that if you ever play this hack you will not be disappointed with the fixes that were added into Pac-Man Collection.
| A very nice hack | Cris1997XX | 2021-12-02 | Version 1.0 |
I've been a Pac-Man fan ever since my childhood, and I loved playing this collection on GBA. But I've always felt the colors across all games were a bit off. Pac-Man Collection+ fixed many little things to enhance the experience. 100% recommended
