Come for the Banjo, Stay for the Nostalgia~Subject N2812024-05-08Version 1.3

  • A B.K. hack that feels well balanced and paced? [Check]
    • Faithful to the source material while adding new bits to stand out on it's own? [Checkers]
    • Extra added content that is, frankly, impressive on scale? [Checkarooni]

Honestly, there's so much right with the mod that the wrongs can EASILY be brushed off. Oh and if you're struggling to find 100% of everything, the Mod creator has a playlist on their Youtube to help you through. BUT I find the Hack was expertly crafted that with enough time and planning, you'll find it all no problem. The Game itself even gives you hints on some of the tougher of secrets. It is a Hack that had me grinning from ear to ear with each no little detail I spotted and Easter Eggs a plenty~

If you love B.K., please do yourself a favor and play this, it's only made me excited for their next planned B.K. hack aptly titled: "Nostalgia."

    The best Banjo HackMattKimura2023-03-08Version 1.3

Thanks to the review below this one, I decided to give this hack a try and see what it's like. I was very surprised how amazing this hack is! The reviewers are right about this hack, it's top notch!

The level design is great and so is the dialogue. The characters all say fitting things that they would in a Banjo game and often times they had me laughing. There's plenty of Easter eggs and that's the best part of Kurko Mods, he loves to add nostalgic Easter eggs. This is hack feels more like an official game done by Rare. It pretty much IS a Banjo Kazooie game. It's an absolute treat to all fans of the series. Being a fan of Zelda OoT as well, it was so much fun exploring Hyrule as Banjo but with Banjo collectibles to find.

The only downsides of this hack were some parts of Lon Lon Ranch (Required use of save states or having extreme patience), and the forest temple (Frustrated me with its puzzles).

If you like Banjo Kazooie, DEFINITELY play this hack! It's the most fun I had playing a rom hack. This is extremely solid for a hack.

    Better Than Banjo Tooiezachmu2023-02-28Version 1.3

This hack is way better than it has any right to be. The level design is very tight just like the original, and the puzzles / secrets are challenging without being tedious. The writing is surprisingly good and matches the tone of the original quite well. I got stuck only once, when I couldn't figure out how to access Kakariko - there was one corner of the Hyrule field area I just overlooked for some reason.

If you loved Banjo Kazooie, this is must-play. It's honestly a better sequel than the actual sequel.

Must play for Banjo Kazooie fansNintenja2022-09-21Version 1.3

So, I dont want to say too much that the other reviews here already said but I'l add this; this hack is amazing and pretty fun. Mark Kurko is to Banjo Kazooie hacking, what Kaze Emanuar is to Super Mario 64 hacking, a genius. We may as well call this an offifial BK release st this point due to its high quality. Looking forward to k kurko releasing Banjo kazooie Nostalgia hack. Add this hack to your collection and just play it for yourself. Its a really good and unique experience.

    The Best Banjo-Kazooie RomhackNintendo 64 Wizard2021-12-16Version 1.3

I was skeptical of this one at first. Not because I thought it would be a bad game, but because I was very disappointed that the first major Banjo-Kazooie mod to preserve all the basic gameplay elements simply reused maps from another game, one that wasn't designed for platforming at that.

However, the Ocarina of Time maps have been adjusted for Banjo-Kazooie's moveset so well, that it almost feels as though they were made for the duo. I daresay these maps now fit Banjo-Kazooie better than they fitted The Legend of Zelda. Right now, this is the closest thing you can get to a Banjo-Threeie. Also, it runs circles around Yooka-Laylee, Super Mario 64 in Ocarina of Time, and maybe even Banjo-Tooie.

And not only are the levels perfectly adjusted for the gameplay, they also look better. The texture mapping is so much more vibrant and detailed compared to Ocarina of Time, despite still working on real hardware and running at 30fps as opposed to Ocarina of Time's 20fps. The graphics aren't the only thing this romhack has over the real Ocarina of Time either, for Mark Kurko somehow managed to make the Ocarina of Time MIDIs sound even better in the Banjo-Kazooie soundfont than the soundfont they were designed for.

It is incredible that this game has no custom code, considering the genius use of the base assets was so clever that it feels as if it's packed with custom code. Players will constantly encounter obstacles never seen in the vanilla game. There's even an entire dungeon with a gimmick that completely changes what you expect the gameplay of a Banjo-Kazooie level to be.

Thank you Mark Kurko, for giving us the real Bano-Threeie in place of what Microsoft and that Kickstarter scam failed to deliver. (AKA: Nut and Bolts and Yooka-Laylee.)

10/10 Stars - We waited almost 20 years for this.

A must play for fans of Banjo Kazooie or Ocarina of Timepocket2021-12-08Version 1.0

Full disclosure, I played this on a real Nintendo 64 using an Everdrive 64 3.0, it ran as smooth as the original games for the most part, but there were some buggy effects mostly on fire, dusty particles, and the shadows, but they're easy to ignore. There was also a very slight transparency to many of the walls of the game, but every Banjo hack I've played on N64 does this. I also played the original release of this hack and it's gone through several updates so far. With that out of the way, let's begin.

If you grew up loving the N64, chances are you've played both Banjo Kazooie and Ocarina of Time. They're both must play N64 titles after all. Or perhaps not. Maybe you only played one of them, which is perfectly understandable given they're two different genres and different styles. So can you enjoy this game having played one game, but not the other? Well, that depends... are you a Banjo Kazooie fan who's never played Ocarina of Time? Then yes. This game is at it's core, a Banjo Kazooie game. It simply takes place in the world of Ocarina of Time. The writing is very in line with what you expect from Banjo, so the humor is expertly maintained. Are you a Zelda fan who's not into Banjo? Well then it might not be as easy for you. This game is a collect-a-thon platformer, and the core gameplay might not gel with you. And if you take Zelda too seriously, you could potentially not appreciate the hack's sense of humor. However, knowledge of Ocarina of Time and the Zelda series in general will help you out in this game. There's even one dungeon that goes really old school and asks you to get a pencil and paper. I won't spoil that though.

Now when this hack says it's Banjo Kazooie in the world of Ocarina of Time, boy do they mean it... for the most part anyway. This is a pretty dang faithful recreation of Ocarina of Time's world, but in a more Banjo Kazooie style that takes some liberties. Very few areas from the game are cut. Some may be heavily altered to the point that it's no longer recognizable though... there are plenty of completely new areas as well.

And this hack is not only a love letter to Ocarina of Time and Banjo, but there are lots of cameos and Easter eggs from tons of video games associated with Rare, Nintendo, and others. These come in the form of game paks, consoles, and guest characters playing video games in hidden areas. There's actually a hidden area listing the number of Easter eggs in each area challenging you to find them. There's

Another very special thing about this hack is the soundtrack, it still very much sounds like Banjo Kazooie music, but it's all remixes from Ocarina of Time, and various other Zelda games, plus a few other tracks for certain Easter egg areas. The stand outs for me is Hyrule Field, Lake Hylia, And the staircase leading up to the final boss encounter. Mark Kurko has actually made this soundtrack available to download, so look forward to that,

This isn't a perfect hack though. This may have changed during one of the revisions, but some areas have some pretty unforgiving platforming challenges, including a tedious one you do as a Mumbo transformation, there's an un-fun invisible maze ( though there's a clue for this if you're not playing on real hardware like I was ), there's an area with a lot of enemies that can only be killed with eggs, but not nearly enough ways to fill them, which is a problem when leaving a map or dying will cause you to lose all your progress in collecting notes. I remember there being a few too many swarms of bees as well. And there's a very difficult race against time that just feels unfair.

Generally, if you love these games, the flaws are very easy to ignore. I urge you to play this if you like either game. Even though there are no new mechanics, all the transformations and enemies are just reskins, and there's no new bosses, this still feels like a completely new game to me, or rather a Rare and Nintendo collaboration from the 90's that went undiscovered until now.
