| Actually Unplayable | rob64 | 2023-04-06 | Version 1.2 |
I made an account just to post this review. For about 3 days, this hack made me think I was going crazy. I was doing so poorly in just about every level, getting hit by almost everything and after several attempts, I barely even made it through routes 1 and 2. It wasn't until today when I played route 3 where I realized, I'm not insane or bad at the game, this hack is the problem. I can't explain the rhyme or reason but the couple of extra frames you get from playing this genuinely makes the game impossible. It took me about a hundred tries to get through the astroid field and when I got to the Fortuna boss I gave up completely. I couldn't beat it even if I abused the hell out of save states every couple of seconds. I had not played the original version of the game for a while so I assumed I just was bad and put it down, but after thinking about it I didn't remember ever having any real trouble with the game, so I put it on and to my surprise I beat all 3 routes back to back without even dying. There is something seriously wrong with the extra speed this hack grants, even if its barely anything. I can't imagine how much more unplayable the 60fps hacks by the same creator are, I tried to use them but couldn't get them to work but I imagine the problem extends to them as well. Maybe I really am just bad and the added slowdown of the original helped me compensate, but after trying to beat route 3 for hours and especially after the Fortuna boss which I'm genuinely convinced you cannot finish with this hack, I don't think that's the case.
| Works on real hardware | InAnotherCastle | 2022-02-20 | Version 1.0 |
Star Fox is a game I wanted back in the 90s, but just never got around to buying. 20+ years later and with no retro nostalgia, it's hard to ignore the sluggishness. Anyway. This hack makes the game sooo much more playable, in my opinion :-) Thanks! PS: I can confirm that it works fine on real hardware having built a repro cartridge using a GSU-1 donor.
| Bravo! Welcome to the next level | Solgnar | 2021-12-30 | Version 1.0 |
Long time lurker on ROMHacking, this one pushed me to finally make an account. I only just got into the Star Fox SFX2 mod (Very good) then the good ol' boys deliver yet again and drop this one on us Initial play through SD2SNES (old) on SFC 1CHIP_01 Smooth gameplay, excellent frames, Sound in sync - an all around improvement on all previous improvements to classic Star Fox. I am absolutely floored nothing to say but Bravo - absolute Bravo
| The difference is stunning | Haz | 2021-12-26 | Version 1.0 |
Only ever played the unpatched rom before this one and holy shit the difference is mind blowing. You actually feel in control this time and the game doesn't cause a migraine just looking at it. Any difficulty increase from enemies moving slightly faster is countered tenfold by being able to actually control your ship and react to what's going on. Videos don't do it justice; the improvement to how the game feels is immediately noticeable and greatly appreciated.
| Slow-Downs? Not here... | Rockman_X | 2021-12-25 | Version 1.0 |
Played this last night and found that this is really a lot better as slow-downs are virtually mitigated. The Game runs a lot smoother. It's a bit faster than the original but that's probably because of the FastRom part. After seeing this I can't see how anyone can make it better than this version. :D Go put this on your fav Rom-Cart and play the crap out of it!
| Boosting to the Maximum ! | CoolK | 2021-12-24 | Version 1.0 |
StarFox, SlowRom, MarioChip... this is how we know StarFox from the SNES. When Emulation was a thing you wanted to make the game go faster for a better/smoother gameplay so you overclocked it. But adding 21Mhz SFX2 and FastRom takes StarFox to the max. of possible speed ! In other words, this hack shows the full potential of the game ! Stable speed, no slowdowns. Just check this video first (www.youtube.com/watch?v=21Q-XCD8oe0) and then the video in the description and then you see how to overclock without overclock ;)
| This is it, this is the one! | LivelyZephyrs | 2021-12-23 | Version 1.0 |
Hey! Glad to be involved in some way with this, as someone super enthusiastic in SNES Star Fox, SF2 included. I didn't think this would see the light of day with some of the past failures that were happening prior to this becoming reality, but by the will of God or something, it happened! This also marks the beginning of SuperFX games being combined with FastROM, as NO SuperFX game ever used FastROM, so this is a first! As it stands, this is THE way to get Star Fox 1 running at a playable framerate on real hardware, and even at full 20FPS on a few emulators with NO overclocking! Congratulations to everyone involved, Kandowontu most of all! Here's to further optimizations in the future!
| STOP!!! ITS TOO FAST!!! | Blazing | 2021-12-23 | Version 1.0 |
Not 24 hours after I make a review saying why I think this whole fast project is hurtful to star fox gameplay, this happens. I literally do not know what faster gameplay does for this game besides make it terrible and unplayable. The devs at Argonaut and Nintendo knew that the game would run slow, so they designed stages accordingly. This flips the script on its head as if this is what was intended all along. It is not. If you enjoy your speed, fine. But as for me, I'm going to enjoy Star Fox the way it was truly intended.
