| A cool hack for sure, but some concerns | MissingNumbers | 2024-02-04 | Version 2.5 |
I'm very impressed with how this hack has shaped up. But I do have some concerns regarding the water levels. The idea of him controlling normally is solid, don't get me wrong. But it feels off that his speed and physics aren't different in any way, like slower speed or higher jumps. I also feel like either Sonic or the water needs a different shade of blue, as it stands right now he blends in way too much. But again, very cool hack otherwise.
| Good but needs improvement | 2023-07-12 | Version 2.5 | |
I feel like there's a million "Character in Super Mario Bros" hacks but none of them really amount to much more than a reskin. It's not at all like the endless Sonic the Hedgehog 1 romhacks that fully port characters from Knuckles Chaotix or Sonic Advance with all of their moveset being fully functional. So it's rather fitting that this Sonic the Hedehog in Super Mario Bros hack actually attempts to make it feel like i'm playing as Sonic in Super Mario Bros. Sonic is faster, but not as fast as he is in his home series. I think that's for the better, as Mario levels don't have as much room to run. Sonic also accelerates automatically like in his home series. He curls into a ball when he jumps, and if you press down while he's running, he'll roll into a ball and be able to take out enemies on the ground as if he was a koopa shell, just like in his home series... however, I feel like he does not stay rolling long enough, so if you try to take out a line of three or four enemies, you run the risk of uncurling right before impact and getting hit... also, Sonic uses the Mario health system, so you won't be picking up rings to restore your health, this is closer to Master System in spirit. However, I still feel like this is the best "Sonic on the NES" you can get at the moment.
| Fun Little Hack That Could Use Some Visual Tweaks | delta7890 | 2022-09-06 | Version 2.5 |
This is nice! Sonic's sprite looks great here, and he plays as you'd expect. A couple things stand out to me that look visually odd to me though: First, Sonic bobs up and down as he walks and runs. While this is consistent with Mario's original sprite, it looks off for Sonic, who remains level in his walking and running animations in his own games. Second, when tossing a fireball in midair, there's a single frame where the top half of Sonic's body will appear to "pop out" of his rolled-up sprite. If possible, I feel like it might look best to simply have Sonic remain rolled up when tossing a fireball in midair.
| A worthy successor. | Kengen | 2022-05-31 | Version 2.5 |
Nice, you've actually managed to make Sonic curve into a ball and the sprites looks slightly more detailed, however the running animation looks weird since Sonic doesn't rotate his head from side to side like in the original games. The original Sonic in SMB1 hack was my very first hack I ever made just for fun and although it was disheartening to see all the negative reviews I'm glad it at least inspired some people to take their own crack at it.
