Hack description

Spyro: Season of Ice DX is a ROM Hack of Spyro Advance for the Game Boy Advance, that uses the English retranslation hack (https://retrohackers.net/translation-details.php?id=6421/) as a base.

In addition to the benefits that the above re-translation offers, DX also adjusts several aspects of the game to provide a smoother gameplay experience:

- The Fairy Requirement to reach the Final Boss (Grendor's Lair 2) has been adjusted so that the player no longer needs every fairy in the game. Now, only 90 fairies are needed, meaning Grendor can be defeated and the game can be finished with just 91. Three lines of Bianca's dialog have been adjusted to accommodate this change.
- All maps in the game have been adjusted to mark the location of all Flammable Objects with an 'X'. Due to the objects resetting upon death, this makes hunting them in one go significantly less tedious.
- In addition to the above change, all Fairy Home Worlds now mark the entrances to other areas with portal graphics (ripped from the sequel Spyro: Season of Flame). This makes locating all level entrances easier.
- Suzan's dialog in Lava Prairie has been adjusted to make mention of the map feature, and to explain the purpose of the 'X's.
- The Professor's dialog for the 'Halt the Honey-Making' task in Honey Marsh has been adjusted to be more specific as to what the player needs to do. The previous hint towards charging was somewhat misleading, as it could cause the bees to despawn if they fell too far behind.
- Minor grammatical fixes in several pieces of dialog.

By far, the definitive way to play Season of IceSaxdude262023-01-25Version 1.01

Wow, what can I say.

I thought the JP version additions in the BASE translation improved so much - menu saving, map - but going the extra mile to tidy up the game, and ease on the final boss requirements?!

Words fail me. The 100% hurdle was the breaking point for nearly everyone I've asked when it comes to finishing this game, and on that alone I'd happily recommend this version, but so many little changes throughout make the experience the best it has ever been,

THIS is the way to enjoy the first GBA Spyro, no question. Fantastic work.

Very nice improvementGrayFoxNinja2022-03-28Version 1.01

This makes the game a lot more bearable, i would have liked for the added X's on the map to change colors after activating the objects, to make it easier knowing the ones you've already activated, other than that like i said this patch makes the game a lot more playable.

Solid upgradeEvilJagaGenius2022-02-22Version 1.01

This was my first time playing one of the GBA Spyro games, and it was a fun time. I wouldn't want to play without this hack though. The map is such a helpful feature for hunting down gems, fairies, new levels, and those flammable targets. It's also useful for double-checking your height and distance before committing to a jump, alleviating some of the troubles the isometric view and limited screen space bring.

If I could suggest one improvement: I noticed that the fairies reuse the same four or five designs across the entire game (in vanilla too). Maybe this hack could give each fairy a unique palette to make them stand out more? It's not too big a deal, you don't really see the fairies again after you rescue them.

Still, the hack is a solid upgrade over the original - makes it less frustrating and more fun.
