Hack description

Legend of the Mana Sword focuses on making the first game of the Mana series both a better experience for first time players, and more fun for returning players.

If you've never played a Mana game before, Legend of the Mana Sword is a good place to start your adventure.

If you've already played later Mana games, it will be familiar yet new.

If you've previously played the original (whether it was called Final Fantasy Adventure, Mystic Quest, or Seiken Densetsu) then Legend of the Mana Sword helps the game you remember better live up to its true potential.

Choose one of the two included patches. Your choice mainly affects your main character.

Features include:
* New title and title screen.
* Super Game Boy border adapted from orioto's Vision of a Tree.
* Two choices for the main character.
* Gameplay bug fixes including the infamous Heal bug.
* Script improvements inspired by the original Japanese script and the lore of later Mana games.
* Hints improved for some of the more baffling puzzles.
* Small graphics tweaks.
* "Lazy DX" enhancements.
* Bug fixes and improvements throughout.

Toward Blue Skies!Ok Impala!2023-07-04Version 2023-02-13

The first Mana game is often forgotten in "best of" lists, because it released so late in the west, had a confusing name and Game Boy games tend to be easier forgotten compared to console games.

That's a shame because Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest deserves to be celebrated as one of the most impressive Game Boy games. Sadly, Square-Enix managed to have three re-releases of this game, with none of them giving it the love it deserves.

In comes Legend of the Mana Sword. This excellent hack by Xenophile improves on many small things to create the definitive edition of FFA/MQ.

The script improvements add much needed extra information to make the story coherent and understandable. This also helps a lot with the infamous "palm trees and 8 puzzle". The bug fixes are very welcome. It's a joy to finally be able to use the "Moogle" item and all the other small tweaks make the game less janky.

The cherry on top is being able to play as Amanda, making for a slightly different adventure, and the color palette changes. Xenophile made small tweaks to the standard GBC palette, but the results are impressive when played on a GBC or GBA.

I played the game on a modded GBA with IPS screen. It was so much fun to finally play the game with green trees and a clear blue sky! The bosses look very impressive with either a red or blue color. FFA/MQ is one of those Game Boy games that's screaming for a proper colorization. But for now, the work done for Legend of the Mana Sword, already does a fantastic job!

Legend of the Mana sword comes highly recommend for everyone who's been on the fence about trying out the very first Mana game. And are you a veteran FFA/MQ player? Then this is the definitive experience!

That is, until a full colorization comes around one day... Toward blue skies and beyond!

A heartfelt tribute to an all-time greatgnome_chomski2022-06-08Version 2022-03-26

Adventure of Mana / Seiken Densetsu is an incredibly important and influential game. However, the original western release was marred by the GameBoy's text limits and a so-so localization - something that sadly was not remedied in the "Collection of Mana" re-release.

Thankfully, this comprehensive hack updates, tweaks, bug-fixes, and polishes the base game into the definitive Seiken experience, perfect for both new and returning players. Previously buggy spells and items work the way they're supposed to, confusing quests have been streamlined, and the story and characters are so much more coherent now.

I was able to play through this whole hack front-to-back with no noticeable bugs or problems. A big thank-you to the creator for their loving salute to an all-time great!

Nice tweaksLigeia2022-03-15Version 2022-03-06

The roms plays nice and runs without issue. The little tweaks and text changes are nice. The minor complaint I could make is that the endgame text seems untouched, it could benefit from adding some additional details that were in the Japanese script, like the Bogard/Mother connexion. (It was untouched in the previous patch I played, I did not play this particular version until the end)

The option to choose the main character is very nice.

There's a very minor graphical bug, right after the girl gets abducted in Kett Manor, when the hero wakes up his sprite gets replaced by the butler's sprite for a few frames.

This is fun and well made!lexluthermiester2022-03-10Version 2022-03-06

While I'm not going to give spoilers, this is a fun new take on the original game. With the latest patch, you have your choice of hero character. The refinements made to the game are very much worth a run through for any fan of Final Fantasy Adventure!
