| Greatly enhances the narrative | Omnises | 2023-11-26 | Version 1.05 |
Just finished a playthrough with this hack. BoF1 was always much less plot heavy than its contemporaries, and the English version totally screwed over what little nuances existed for plot points and the character's dialogue and characterization. This hack greatly enhances that, and now all the characters have actually understandable themes and personalities. Ultimately it's still the plot of BoF1 so it's not going to suddenly blow your socks off, but I think if you want to play BoF1 for the first time, or like me playing it again and want a little more to chew on, I would highly recommend playing this over vanilla. Oh, and the addition of a run button is very nice. There's a tiny bit of jank but it works perfectly.
| Now the quintessential version of BoF | Red88Rex | 2022-09-03 | Version 1.03 |
I cannot recommend this enough. This is possibly the best script rewrite I've personally played. The lore matches the later games, and the story makes a lot more sense. Names and items and equipment are changed and accurate. All the NPCs say new things, so it's still worth talking to everyone. Really enjoyed this. HARD yes on if you should play!
| Excellent! A worthy successor to Ryusui's BOF II retranslation | Twist | 2022-08-20 | Version 1.03 |
This is an excellent rewriting of the original script. I would even go as far as to say that it is the only way one should play Breath of Fire I now. Even though the translation for BoFI wasn't as bad as it's sequel, it was still awkward. This rewriting of the script makes this old game truly enjoyable - from a narrative perspective - for the modern age. I did actually laugh out loud once or twice. And despite the "profanity" warning, the swearing isn't anything you wouldn't see in any PG nintendo game. Note: I did still find 4 typos during my playthrough, mostly repeated words.
| Finally gave me the push to finish Breath of Fire! | Cetra_Blues | 2022-07-13 | Version 1.03 |
Back in 2020 when the world was at a bit of a standstill, I decided to seize the opportunity to dive into the Breath of Fire series- a series that somehow eluded me in my childhood. I'd started the original Breath of Fire and got about a third of the way into the game before growing tired of some of the game's more dated mechanics. Monotonous grinding, vague instructions and the snail's pace at which your characters move were wearing me down. I ultimately put the game on indefinite hold, unsure that I'd pick it back up again. Fast forward almost two years to the day and I got word that a new hack for the game was released. It took all but one glance at its features before I knew I'd be diving back into Breath of Fire with the help of this fantastic project- and am I glad I did. Gone is the need for excessive grinding, now that you have the option to double your experience and currency gained in battles. Exploration, also, is much nicer now that you can dash with the push of a button. Throw in a re-written script which gives the characters so much more charm & personality and you have yourself a fantastic game- the game Breath of Fire truly is, beneath all of its hindrances that were common in RPGs of that era. I can't thank FlamePurge enough for their stellar work in this hack. Breath of Fire finally has a chance to show its true potential and stand as an excellent start in what I'm sure is an incredible series. Thanks to War of the Goddess, I was able to finally complete the first game. For that reason, I can't recommend this hack enough.
| A must play for veterans and newcomers alike ♥ | DhinCardoso | 2022-06-12 | Version 1.03 |
A must play for veterans and newcomers alike ♥ - Played start to finish this time - I never managed to finish that game because they was too grindy and the translation always bothered me to the death (The first BoF I've played was III) but was always fan of the series and being the one who finished the last 3 titles of the series I always wanted to visit the first and the second one - tried this War of the Goddess and that job was really done with mastership - nice retranslation, perfect balance, the run feature (pressing B) and the XP and Zenny boost put that game where it belongs - enjoyable start to finish. | The best way to play the game. | T29 | 2022-05-23 | Version 1.03 |
This hack is a great improvement over both the original version and the GBA one. The revised script, the new names and B-button dash makes the game more enjoyable. Double XP and the zenny patch is ideal for players that don't like grinding. And the appendices are a nice addition. This hack is definitely the best way to play this game.
| Breezing through the game | Rpgxme | 2022-05-21 | Version 1.03 |
This review is about using the double experience and double money add on. I made it as far as when you get the character "Blue", though she has a different name. I felt there was no challenge at all. Even some boss battles I made it through without even healing. The part of the game when you play as just Gobi, I grinded a little and ended up leveling up to level 35 in no time. After getting your party back he was far stronger than everyone else. I was grinding some to get enough money to buy the best equipment for everyone, resulting in being over powered. Maybe play this hack without the double experience and money add on.
| A new Light Dragon rises | gnome_chomski | 2022-05-20 | Version 1.03 |
This romhack breathes new life into a retro classic, and is very much worth your time whether you're a first-timer or you're an old hand returning for your dozenth playthrough. The graphics restoration work and quality of life enhancements are great (especially the new menu labels and equipment icons), but this hack deserves a special salute for the writing. The original translation is serviceable, but pretty stilted. For their part, Vivify really went the extra mile in adding flavor and emotion to the script and character dialogue, while still staying true to the "Breath of Fire feel" of the BoF II re-translation and the later PSX games. This is A+ work that's fully compatible with the SNES Classic and every other retro-box I've tried it on.
| B-E-A-UTIFUL | ParkerMcFly | 2022-05-02 | Version 1.02 |
Fantastic hack that really brought out what I remember the game being when I was younger, but now translated into a language my adult mind can better understand. I loved how the characters felt so much more alive, and their personalities could really be understood this time around. Two minor pieces of feedback that do not ruin this wonderful hack, but do detract from it slightly: 1) The language used across some of the interactions with characters. The use of some swear words makes me second guess in allowing my sons to try this hack out to re-experience what I did as a child. I might stick to the old translation for their first game through. 2) At one point early in the game (can't remember where exactly; I should have written it down) someone uses the word "desert" rather than "dessert." It threw me off when I saw it. Minor spelling mistake. One suggested improvement for the future is to add more detail to items' descriptions. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art! I would love to see if we could continue to modify the game and add additional events or even more endgame to this. Would be quite a task, but I'd love to see something like Breath of Fire +, ya know?
| Big improvement but still needs some work | winterelegy | 2022-03-18 | Version 1.02 |
No question about it, if you're going to play this game than get this version. The original translation is pretty horrible and War Of The Goddess is a huge improvement. Way too much dialogue/story stuff in the original is poorly/awkwardly translated and/or ambiguous and this clears up a lot of that. That said, this could still use some work. A lot of the new item (and especially equipment) names are an improvement, but a lot of usable items need updated descriptions - all the battle items just say "can be used in battle" with no clue as to what it actually does. Would be great to get descriptions of spells as well, since with the name changes there are a lot of spells (esp. for Nina) where it's not clear what they actually do - ex. "Exalt" which when used just says "Cheer Up" whatever the hell that means. Also some of the item names are just weird and don't match up with Bof 2 or 3 - ex. the stat items like War Soul or FastVine (yet others like Stamina and MisoSoup do match up) or Serum instead of Antidote or Moonid instead of Moondrop or "Rester" for one of the healing items. Also why is the rang called "foil"?? Anyway, despite some weirdness with the new names, the translation itself is a big improvement and improves the story quite a bit. I highly recommend playing this instead of the vanilla version and hope to see more improvements in the future.
| The only way to play Breath of Fire | Ace_Aileron | 2022-02-22 | Version 1.01 |
Both Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II are fantastic games, even when matched up with other RPGs on the SNES: new and cool concepts (night/day, actions that can be preformed on the map, etc.). However, anyone who has played these games know that the script for both games leaves something to be desired. BoF II was fortunate enough to have that issue fix but Breath of Fire was left in the past... ...until now. Breath of Fire: WotG provides the exact overhaul this game needs and honestly requires. Not only does it make the story actually enjoyable, but addresses some of the biggest and most ambiguous questions (looking at you, Nina) that players of the game have found unanswered over the years. The item descriptions are extremely beneficial and the dash button is the Quality of Life improvement that any RPG of the era needs. Every once in a while, there's an improvement patch that is released that replaces the vanilla version of the game (i.e. you'll only play this version, never the original again) - Breath of Fire: WoTG is that patch. An excellent set of improvements to an already (fairly) excellent game. Make sure to add this version prior to your library prior to your next play through.
