Hack description

The first entry in the Wario Land series has been colorised with this hack.

It doesn't have the quality of the Mario Land color hacks, but it's still better than the monochrome version.

It doesn't run on a monochrome Game Boy, only on a Game Boy Color.

Absolutely wonderfulcompuowl2024-07-04Version 1.2

Thank you so much for this awesome ROM hack. Makes the game feel like a genuine Game Boy Color game. So much fun to play!

You've really contributed towards making my evenings more fun thanks to this hack. Thank you so much!

A near-perfect refresh of a stone cold classicBLAZINOAH2024-01-25Version 1.2

Having played both an earlier build of this hack and the most recent update (1.2 at the time of writing), I can say that this is a fine and much-needed patch of a wonderful game that keeps getting more refined with each new version. The only flaw I've noticed in V1.2 (apart from the regrettable but unnecessary and understandable lack of GB backwards compatibility) is that the garlic power-up icon appears not to have been colorized yet. Hopefully future updates will address this issue. The new colorized graphics really do pop on the display of an Analogue Pocket and dove-tail beautifully with Cornholio's excellent movement adjustment patches to create the definitive way to play the first (and best) Wario Land title.

Highly recommended. Thanks for making this colorization hack!!!g3cko4862023-08-19Version 1.11

I played this all the way through and I really enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised by the color choices b/c of course you always have your own picture in your head. There was nothing that I saw that was un-colorized, and this also fixes slowdown in a few areas where the original DMG hardware couldn't handle the number of sprites on screen.

Highly recommended. Thanks for making this colorization hack!!!

I'm so happy somebody did this !tigrou2022-11-10Version 1.11

This is one of my favorite game of all times. I even wrote a level editor for it. Thank you for your work.

A great start, but still pretty buggy.Bluestreak2022-11-06Version 1.11

At long last, all three Super Mario Land games AND Wario Land Game Boy games are in full-color!

But as the author said, don't expect anything along the lines of Toruzz's work with the first two Super Mario Land games.

Let's go through the good and bad.

Good: Level palettes are very well chosen, and for the most part, feel along the lines of Wario Land 2 & 3. Most characters have well-chosen palettes, and there is no slowdown more than the original game has from my playthrough via the BGB emulator.

However, there is also the bad. And most of the bad can luckily be improved should the author continue the project, or someone take the reigns over if they choose not to.

Bad: Very glitchy color loading, when changing screens, with artifacts when the screen scrolls, or blocks are broken. Sometimes the letters disappear when the course number screen loads. Some graphical elements needed to be redrawn in. Few stages to compensate for the new colorized graphics to reduce jagged edges (forest levels are the worst offenders), and some characters, like the pirate ducks, look extremely strange with being very orange. Captain Syrup herself could use a bit of shading removed and slight redrawing to look better as well. Also, the colors around the coins sometimes don't match the background.

While it has a long way to go, even with these criticisms, I'd still say if the glitchiness doesn't bother you, go for it! What does look good, looks VERY good! The author has something good going, and can be even better, should they continue it and iron out the bugs.

I Played to the end, only one game freeze was found in Course 37, so game freezes should be rare, at least on BGB. I have not tried it on MGBA nor real hardware.

One of the Best Hacks.MichalGrodal22022-11-04Version 1.11

This is such a nice hack. When I saw the 1.0 original hack, it was a little rough around the edges, and crashed a few times, but now with the update, it looks much better, with almost no imperfections! After getting all the treasures and getting the Planet, I had no bugs that I ran into and no crashes with this game! I would like it if this hack could fix Wario's jumping to make it more in line with the other Wario Land games, but this is still one of the best hacks I have ever seen. Great Job!

Essential hackNintenja2022-09-19Version 1.11

I think this game deserved and needed this color hack more than any other game on the b&w original gameboy.i played this as a kid and definitely feel some nostalgia for it..borrowed a friends cart and beat it..but never wanted to play it again as time went on..bc..no color. Just too outdated to see myself playing again til now..id say this game is alive again and its pretty awesome..havent completed it but the first few levels seem really well done..hopefully youll continue working on and refining this hack and it will be on the same level as the sm land 1+2 gb to gbc hacks in the future..thanks for your contribution and for making this game playable today.

Has some room to grow, but an excellent hackstarlightbotanist2022-08-10Version 1.11

After playing colorized versions of SML and SML2, I was happy to find this hack. It really makes the game come alive. It does need a bit more polish, but I would not let that stop you from playing it.

Bringing Color to a Colorful GameZetawilk2022-08-08Version 1.11

Well I finally got around to completing Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land DX, and I'm impressed. Every time I see one of these color-enhanced mods to old Gameboy games, I keep thinking of what colors would fit where in other old titles and wish I could try my hand at this. Wario Land 1 is a classic title, and for a Gameboy game, there's no shortage of opportunities to really explore and experiment with palettes throughout its 40 stages.

The colors chosen always seem appropriate, and especially delightful is the use of daytime lighting for certain stages-for example, the second train stage takes place at sunset, tackling in the theme that this is indeed a sequel stage to the earlier train course in Parsley Woods. The night-themed levels do an excellent job at providing the ominous forboding before its boss stage.

If there are any errors, the only one I noticed was Wario's foot for a brief second when he jumps onto the moon at the very end (spoilers for a decades-old game).

Overall, if you've been missing the first Wario Land game but haven't managed to get yourself to play it, this is definitely a great excuse to go ahead and do so.

A decent colorization with some flaws.ShadowOne3332022-08-01Version 1.0

I was finally able to 100% complete Wario Land with this DX hack. There are quite a few points to go over with it:

1) The majority of the level's color selection seems really solid. The contrast of colors and choice for each world is quite neat. The only caveat with this is that one cave palette that looks still too gray for a DX hack, everything else in terms of levels seemed fine!

2) The hack could really use some rework when it comes to the characters palettes. Most of the enemy characters use the same base color for the whole character, being one color a light tone and the second a darker shade of it. Some two coloured palettes for enemies would greatly improve the presentation. Wario's and other main character palettes could also use a good rework hacking-wise, as they do have some oddly colored portions of their body due to the palette limitation (splitting the sprites could help here)

3) There are some major bugs/glitches regarding some bosses. For me, I encountered a graphical glitch with the Bird boss, and two full freeze glitches at the Penguin and the Genie bosses. These really need to be addressed.

4) This might have been on my end, so take this one lightly. I played using the mGBA core on RetroArch 1.10.2, and for reason I was struggling to get the game to save on SRAM. I only got it to save twice, once during the first beach boss, and a 2nd when I got the freeze glitch on the Penguin boss. After that, the game didn't save anymore even after defeating the final boss, so resetting the game or relying on its normal save behaviour isn't working for me. I'm unsure if this is an issue with mGBA/RetroArch or the DX hack itself. I'll try to test on other emus.

With these points made, the hack is still enjoyable and a good colorization overall. I encourage the creator (or anyone else with the knowledge and interest) to tackle the issues listed in this and the other reviews, and with that, this will be a no brainer high recommendation. At this moment, it gets a "Recommended... with some caveats" summary.

EDIT: I'm glad to see that this patch is still getting updated to address the most problematic issues it has. As of the new 1.11 version, the crashes and bugs with bosses have been fixed, making this a playable without any game crashing stuff, and also some color modifications here and there to make this a much more enjoyable DX hack.

Also, I haven't checked yet, but I think the change to MBC5+RAM+BATTERY could have also fixed the saving issue, thought I have yet to verify this properly.

All in all, I can now wholeheartedly recommend this patch to anyone that wants to experience Wario Land in full color and in good quality :)

Exactly what we needed in a Gameboy ColorizationSupergamerguy2022-07-29Version 1.11

I don't think a project like this should be compared to something like Super Mario Land DX or Super Mario Land 2 DX. This Colorization project accomplishes just what it sets out to do: to bring the first Wario Land game in-line with the rest of the series. It accomplishes that feat outstandingly, with each and every sprite in this game rendered in full, detailed color. The environments pop with bright, appealing color palettes, as do the enemies. That's all we really needed for this game, and I couldn't ask for much more. I even like the white Jet Hat, as I think it's lack of color helps distinguish it from Wario's other two powerups.

I commend this hack's author for fixing the bugs of this hack's original release, and continuing to improve this product (despite the expectations set by previous Gameboy Colorizations). I cannot thank the author enough for giving me a reason to play one of the Gameboy's best titles.

A really well-made effort! Totally worth it!mullse012022-07-23Version 1.11

Wario Land was one of my all-time favorite games as a kid, and I played it non-stop. This was a really nice walk down memory lane for me. The colorization is very nice, with very few glitches or bugs as of v1.1. Played through the whole thing without noticing anything weird or wonky. Excellent work!

Very nice, with some things that can be tweaked.SkyLink2022-07-18Version 1.11

Very beautiful, much better than the original version. But, there are some things that can be checked. Jet Wario, for example, has a completely white helmet, when the eagle's beak shown in the power-up should be yellow with a blue W, following the official arts, this bothers me a little lol. And some enemies even appear entirely white and black. Other than that, the game is pretty fun to play.

A great new experienceG30FF2022-07-16Version 1.11

The 1.0 release of the hack was a very solid starting point, despite its flaws and crashes. I was eagerly awaiting a revision that would fix some of those issues and polish the experience up. The new version goes a long way towards addressing the comments others have raised about the hack, and it looks much better now. There's still a couple of very minor coloration bugs (for example, a square of discolouration appears very briefly after breaking a block, and fade effects could be more elegant), but that should not stop you from enjoying this patch as is! Highly recommended.

Much Betterwabbajackw2022-07-16Version 1.11

1.11 version is much better with more color palettes (ex. dragon head with yellow and red). A few color glitches are still present but nothing prohibitive. A pleasure to see my childhood game in DX version. Very nice job, keep working on it!

Looks really good, but...N.Dpendent2022-07-16Version 1.11

So far this looks really good, but would it be nice, if Wario`s gloves were white instead of yellow. Maybe this could be changed, then i`m really happy with it. Tried it myself by editing the tiles, but that didn`t work...

Not working on MBC5 Cartsskite20012022-04-08Version 1.0

The colors are nicely done, but there is still room for improvement. The biggest problem is, that on the actual version it didn't work with real MBC5 Carts at all. I hope it could be fixed. Overall good DX start but needs fixes.

Serious IssuesPoodlestargenerica2022-03-30Version 1.0

Firstly, no amount of hard work on a project should be disregarded, especially when it was done for free, and probably as a learning experience. So any comments are towards the actual project, and not the person who worked on them. They are also made for the improvement of what I consider to be a worthy project, not to discourage.

This hack makes Wario dark pink similar to how he was in Wario 2&3 but those were poorly colored games, everyone knows that. His clothes aren't even yellow in those games. The goal of ANY Warioland DX project should surely be to make Wario the correct colors, not to match other poorly rendered games.

The colors are also too dark, they seem to have been chosen for their aesthetic value with little regard to how actual games are put together. Wario should be a darker game, but you don't do that just by making every color darker, that's not how color works.

This project needs to be completely restarted most likely to yield results that will do the game justice, unfortunately. Any claims that this is better than the monochrome version are very similar right now to people who prefer colorized versions of classic black and white films.

Not bad at all, but serious problems with certain bossesEggplantus2022-03-29Version 1.0

I actually like the coloring and REALLY want to recommend this, but I cannot because of serious issues with Bobo and the Genie. The game often glitches up and crashes when fighting these two bosses. This may have to do with the fact that these two use the background, rather than sprites, for their graphics - while the Devil's Head also uses the background for its "base" graphic, its animated parts (eyes, nostrils, tongue) are sprites, therefore it does not glitch out.

I really wish I could recommend this, but I cannot, ESPECIALLY since the Genie glitching out can potentially corrupt your save file!

Good Enough For PlaythroughsSuperStarFox2022-03-27Version 1.0

I played through the entire game for 4 to 5 hours and already had experienced some issues. The colors, sprites, and most of the tile sets aren't completely polished as Toruzz's Super Mario Land 1 & 2 DX hacks. I really think it should use a lot more work as well as having at least one new feature to become an actual Deluxe port of Wario Land.

I actually didn't feel like playing the game nor the hack at first until I went through the game more and realize that it isn't that bad as I thought. But still, even though the colors aren't almost as good as the last two Mario Land games it's worth at least a shot if you're into the Wario Land series.

Needs a lot more polishgordon812022-03-27Version 1.0

Some colors are well chosen, but most don't have the work to make you forget the black and white version. On the other hand, many sequences are reminiscent of the colors that the game boy color added by default to black and white games.

AMAZING, great job thank you!atpstudios2022-03-27Version 1.0

First I will say I understand everyone's criticism about the lack of polish but YOU DID A GREAT JOB! After playing through a few stages and watching bits and pieces from a lets play on YouTube, I would have to say just ignore the criticism because this hands down is an upgrade from playing it in black and white and to be honest. I'm just so glad to finally be able to play this in color I never even noticed the so called problems other people seem to have about the colorization.

Uninspired but promising colorization.nj180grados2022-03-26Version 1.0

I will give my objective opinion. I think that as a gift for fans and nostalgics, it's not bad, but it needs to be worked on more objectively.

I mean above all to take into account the original artworks so that they are faithful as much as possible.

Regarding the general finish of this work, I notice inconsistencies in the character of Wario, especially in the details of the face since the colors mix where they shouldn't.

As for the levels and the enemies, I think that being a first-time job, they have chosen to simply color in two tones. In the level map I find it a bit loaded in that sense.

I hope to see improvements in the future, currently I don't recommend it if you are a Wario fan.

But first of all I want to thank the work of the author and this first attempt.

Finally, someone did it! *EDIT*WeNeedWarioLandDXwColor2022-03-25Version 1.0

As you can tell by my account name, I've been anxiously waiting for someone to give Wario Land 1 the DX treatment. While not perfect, I imagine this game must have been very difficult to colorize. Regardless of its flaws, you did what you could and breathed new life into this underrated classic. If I could buy you a beer, I would.

I just hope someone comes along and gives it a touch up at some point, but this is a great start and I appreciate it very much.

EDIT: ***CRASHING DURING FINAL BOSS***

I played through this wonderful hack and finally beat the game for the first time. However, I couldn't have done it without save states in retroarch. The final boss fight crashed several times, often resetting the game. Luckily I was using save states the whole time, and was able to beat the game.

I encountered this same bug once or twice before this part as well, once seemingly at random, and another during the bird boss fight. I do suggest this hack to anyone interested, so long as you use save states like I did. The credits also flicker rapidly while they slide into frame from the side of the screen, which is very minor, but I thought it was worth noting.

This hack is very exciting to me, as a fan of the series, and I hope these issues will be addressed.

The emulator I was using during my playthrough was lr-mgba, I will try it out on different cores as well. EDIT: Same issues with lr-gambatte emulator as well.

Still needs some workAnimebryan2022-03-25Version 1.0

I've also been desperately waiting for someone to colorize this & it's finally here. While I am glad that this was finally done, the colorization could definitely use an improvement. I just hope that korxo isn't burnt out with the work he put in & comes back to improve the coloring scheme & lighting, as I noticed that the HUD icons haven't been individually colored or that certain colors aren't fitting for certain environments, including some colors which are too dark, like the mini-games at the end of the levels.

Looking forward to seeing an improvement in the near future.

It's a startLigeia2022-03-25Version 1.0

It's great that there's interest in colorizing Wario Land. After the great work that's been done on both Super Mario Land games, it's only natural that Super Mario Land 3 gets the same treatment and I've been hoping for that. Unfortunately, the level of quality isn't the same, by a long shot.

Palettes choices are questionable with generally ugly colors which often clash with each other. I think it's important to think of how the different colors match with each other in the larger picture. Super Mario Land 1 DX is a textbook example of a colorization done right in that regard.

I'd like to point out that the colorization is not complete, some stuff is left in black & white, like most of the end of level 3 for instance.

I still recommend it because it's nice a colorized Wario Land, even flawed, exists at all, but it definitely needs more work.

The hack everyone was waiting forbrownjacket2022-03-25Version 1.0

I'm pretty sure most people who played the DX hacks of the first two Mario land games were wondering when a hack like this would get released.

While the level of detail may not be the same as the first two Mario land hacks, it's still way better than some of the professional re-colorizations that were getting released on GBC back in the day (i.e. Konami Collection). The time and effort the author put into this really shows.

I second that other guy on the beer offer.

Great job & thanks again!

A Great Colorful Improvement to the OriginalRunTheCoins2022-03-24Version 1.0

This has been a long awaited and much needed improvement. The colors really look accurate to the artwork!

Need to be polished but nice for a first tryDowdheur2022-03-24Version 1.0

I was waiting for this colorized hack to come. Wario Land is one of my favorite GB games. I was very happy when I played SML2 DX and said a big "YES!" when i saw that finally someone decided to make a wario land color hack.

To be clear, the author is right: it's not as good as other color hacks. But I really want to warmly welcome the effort, and I hope that the author will polish his work in order to try to offer us a version at least as great as the other games in the saga.

THANK YOU !!

Rough around the edges... literallySLXD2492022-03-24Version 1.0

I've been waiting for something like this for Wario Land 1 for a long time. It's a greatly underappreciated entry in the Wario Land series... and all my hopes were smashed like fine china. While I appreciate the effort to try and bring color to a GB game, it's done completely wrong. Wario land does a lot of fade ins and outs, and for some strange reason, the overworld has a yellowish base while the fading section is more of a blue. The textures are being loaded entirely incorrectly. I can see all the corners of textures during both the fade out and in actual gameplay. it's like someone forgot to properly crop and cut the colored edges of each tile. Also, Wario's coloring is a rather weak attempt to make him stand out. the yellow and orange colorings are as interesting as bran cereal. The levels are also highly uninteresting. All they are are a combinations of yellows and browns amid a blue and white background.

I absolutely appreciate the effort to once again color a classic game, but between boring level palettes, unpleasantly edged tiles and a fadeout screen that is heavily half assed, I simply cannot recommend this.
