Prosecution: As others have stated, the game is punishingly difficult and "too busy for its own good". It pulls no punches and starts you off facing down flying enemies and difficult-to-notice-on-first-inspection pitfalls. I can see where this might make sense to an extent on a design standpoint, but not with an entire game ahead of the player. The rebalancing (if it can be called that) is in good faith, but isn't quite enough to soften the blow of the game's difficulty. If the flying enemies had stopped in inside areas, it would have served the game both mechanically and aesthetically. The backgrounds were a bit dark and the music a bit too low in tone. Defense: The ideas for a sword, the all-female(?) sprite work, much of the platform design, and certain power-up changes are innovative, fun, and certainly to be encouraged. Despite some other reviewer's appeal to feminist theory throughout his/her/xer/whatever review, the sprite work is not nearly as outlandish as that review might make it out to be; besides, feminism has no place in video games, much less in ROM hacking. The aesthetics I was able to see (I gave up on being killed by the first cat) were well-done (though the player's avatar's walk animation looks a bit too much like she's doing calisthenics, and it comes off as a bit silly). Verdict: A salvageable hack with lots of potential. Judgment: Turn the difficulty down a bit, turn the background colors up a notch, and keep everything else (even the calisthenics).
| Way to busy for its own good | Scposteel | 2022-04-15 | Version 1.0 |
I love the idea behind this one, and it has a lot going for it. I enjoy the level design, the sprite work ect. However this game's critical flaw is that it is way, way, way to busy with enemy placement. As early as stage 1 you're easily overwhelmed by a vast number of flying enemies. Even using rewinds and save states it's an incredible chore to try and get through this one. If the flying enemies was used more sparingly, and in more appropriate areas than you'd have a quality hack. As it is right now, I can't recommend this one.
| Too many flying enemies and pits | Casfin | 2022-04-03 | Version 1.0 |
It's been a while since I played a Castlevania romhack. Well... All I can say is: too many flying enemies and pits. Maybe that's what the author was aiming for, but it's not my cup o tea. Maybe it gets better. But I'm done for now.
